Another great video and very timely to remind us how awesome our southern summer sky is. The church images are great and as always your light painting is unbeatable, but that last panorama with the reflection in the dam…. Wow! If you get time in the schedule a video of processing the more subtle details of the summer sky like Barnard’s loop etc that show up so well in these images would be brilliant, I know this is a big challenge for many photographers. Great work and thanks as always.
@nightscapeimages.richard I went hunting on Google for old railway lines near me, but couldn't find anything suitable, also I look at trees now, thinking that would look cool under the night sky, lol
A very productive couple of nights you had there Richard. Superb images of the church and the Orion Cloud complex, and the railway tracks was a lovely balanced composition with the tree on the left and the LMC top right, magic! 👏👏
I love the church image - what a great shot!! I am planning to get out and shoot some hay bales and do star trails behind them - so your images have inspired me to get out and do it!!
Thanks Stephen. Yes you're right about the heat haze, although it was quite a bit cooler during the night, and the wind may have been responsible for that.
Absoutely amazing images Richard. The weather was playing ball there, there is an Orange weather warning here in southern Ireland at the moment 9.16pm. Again fab video & loved it 👏👏👍🇮🇪
Welcome back Orion and the Gum Nebula and the Summer Constellations. Orion looked very prominent over the church and the Ha shone through really well. The shot over the dam really showed the Gum Nebula well! You had a great adventure with plenty of rewarding images under the night sky. 😎😁👌

Wonderful images Richard, I was out last night here in Scotland, also photographing a church in very windy conditions, tried a vertical pano but now wish I’d tried a traditional pano as very warped edges, your light painting in your pano is incredible, as I ended up using a couple of video lights to keep my lighting consistent. Love your railway track shot too
@ yes I am well thanks - hope you are also. Reassuring to know that we do not get all of the bad weather - we are in the middle of yet another storm! Quick question - I have just treated myself to a Z6ii and was thinking of getting my old Z6 Astro modified. Is yours just H-alpha modified or full spectrum?
It's funny to see you in shorts and t-shirt, while we Northern Hemisphere dwellers can only go out at night dressed like astronauts ready for hyperspace at this time of year. Great video, fantastic photos and inspirational talk Thank you
Great work again Richard Glad you have been able to get out for some Astro! I've been struck with crappy weather for the past month during the weekends when I have time to shoot , could go out during the week but makes it a too late of a night when you have to work the next day....P.S to those of you who are buying Astro Gear please Stop your bring in clouds...

In your final image of the dam I like how you created a highlight on the far side of the dam using the torch by shining it back towards the camera so as to make it appear as though the sky was reflecting off the water. Hope I got the right.
Thanks for watching Trevor. That highlight on the water is natural . .I didn't shine the torch back towards the camera . .in fact there is no light painting at all in that image.
Great video Richard. The northern sky is spectacular with all the ha! Really want to get one of my cameras ha modified soon. My favourite pic out was the last one with the dam in the foreground. Spot on mate!!
Fantastic video Richard. Beautiful compositions. You also gave me an answer to something i was wondering about. I'm in the Northern Hemisphere. Orion is always ( to me) right side up. His sword goes down to the left. In your Hemisphere. He's upside down. I've always wondered about that. If i ever could. I'd love to get down there. Such great targets there. Great vlog and images, Richard. I will have to find one more video of yours, where you explain the settings for timelapse shooting. My external intervalometer died and its a good chance I learn how to use build-in option.

I find it hard this side of town to find decent subjects, but I'm a bit more nervous of approaching farmers and asking permission but from my drives around Muskerry/Myola area there's not overly much although about 5km as the crow flys on Rigbye Rd there is an old shed and broken windmill but couldn't find anyone to ask about it.
Well to be honest Rob I did do a long exposure and I also added a light painted image of those at the back. It just gets too complicated to explain all of that as text in the video.
You mentioned that you needed to change your settings a bit to pull enough signal from Orion, as opposed to what you usually do for the Milky Way. Do you mean 1600 ISO rather than 800? I'd also love to see a future video on editing your summer sky constellations, as that's what I have to work with now in the US. Again, thanks for a great video!!
No it's not so much about the settings as how many shots I took. So for Orion I like to stack maybe 10 images rather than just take one image ... which is what I tend to do with the milky way. Stacking gives you greater signal and less noise so you can push the image more in post. Great video and images. Thx. I always find it difficult to find the right amount of light painting. Do you have a rule of thumb for that, or is it just trial and error?
Thanks for watching. I set the white balance on this camera to 3000k with plus 1.5 green tint. But then I do a lot of extra adjustments in post processing.
Hey Richard - awesome shots, thanks for sharing 💜 Would love to see a video of the editing process. When you're lightpainting, do you use a torch with a specific colour temperature?
Thanks for watching Cathy. I use an led torch but add a 1/2 cto gel over the front to warm up the colour a bit. I also make further adjustments in post as necessary but this gets me very close.
Richard . Thank you for such a beautiful video. My friend & I shot Orion in January this year: found it more technically challenging: so as Eric mentioned, an editing video if possible, would be so awesome please. And can I ask what torch do you use for light painting of large objects ? Thank you again for your magical content. Cheers Manjul
Thanks again for your great encouragement Manjul. I'll have a look at another editing video as the season rolls on for sure. I used the LED Lenser P7 torch for lighting on the church and hay bales etc. I do sometimes use small led panels to do low level lighting but I prefer the torch .. but it's harder technically to do.
Hola, buenas tardes!!
Thanks so much for watching. I don't think the A7iii will have any problems. I have heard of issues with the A7R2 Sony however. I had my modification done here in Australia but I have no knowledge of Spanish companies that do such things.
Saludos y buen finde 📸
Wonderful creative shots as always Richard. About to purchase my first tracker. Do you prefer the Skywatcher tracker over the MSN Nomad? Inspired by your work! Peter
Thanks for watching Peter. As a general rule I'd say the Skywatcher trackers are more robust but the Nomad is so light and easy to use . .and good for when you need to walk a distance from the car. Both produce spectacular results.
Thanks for another wonderful and inspiring video Richard. Just went to order a couple of calendars from your Facebook link but says I need a password. Loved the 2024 sending a 2025 calendar to my wife in Japan for new year. Please let me know - Dave
Another great video mate. A question, when you was light painting the church, you looked to be between the light and the camera, how does this not leave a missing silhouette of light?
Thanks for watching. A lot of the video footage isn't when I'm actually taking the images .. I have to make the lighting a bit brighter for the video recording.
hello Richard and community, another amazing nightscape photo thanks for all you videos and tutorials ^^ i have a question : is your Nikon z6 II partially or totally unfiltered please because i want to buy one and i don't know if i have to do this ?
Thanks for watching. It has what is known as a "Visible + h-alpha" modification. This is different to a "Full Spectrum" mod. You certainly don't have to do any modifications to a Nikon Z6ii to achieve wonderful images .. it just helps see more of the reds and pinks.
Hi Richard, I have wondered why do you use an A7SIII for videoing inverted of a Nikon which you would already have lenses for? Does the A7SIII really give that much better low light video?
@@nightscapeimages.richard thanks. I'm trying to decide whether to buy a Z30 or A7SIII for my travel docs. Money isn't a problem, but light weight and good night video is really important.
Love your stuff, Richard. Question: Since it looks like you used your astro modified cam for the whole shoot, did the church come out red? Did you have to color correct it in post?
Thanks Terry. Yes I did use the astro mod camera for the foregrounds as well. I set the white balance in camera to about 3000k and change the tint a little to the green. But yes the original RAW files have a lot more red than normal and I do considerable color correction in post.
Well as the weather warms up I do take a bit more care. Snakes, spiders and ants are the worst . .although the mosquitoes are terrible in the warmer weather. Most of my milky way shooting happens in the cooler months where none of the above are an issue.
Brilliant images. I still can't get used to seeing Orion upside down 😂😂😂
Yes it's like that with a lot of things Alan
That image of the rail tracks, the LMC just tops it off. Spectacular.

What torch are you using to illuminate the church?
I used my trusty old LED Lenser P7 torch for that. On it's lowest setting mostly.
Hola, buenas tardes!!
Muchas gracias
Thanks so much for watching. I don't think the A7iii will have any problems. I have heard of issues with the A7R2 Sony however. I had my modification done here in Australia but I have no knowledge of Spanish companies that do such things.
Saludos y buen finde 📸
@@samuelmatossantiago5108 All the very best my friend.
Was that a falling star I saw at min.10:03 up over the church?
Very possibly, I usually don't see them when I'm out there talking to camera and wandering around.
Thanks for another wonderful and inspiring video Richard. Just went to order a couple of calendars from your Facebook link but says I need a password. Loved the 2024 sending a 2025 calendar to my wife in Japan for new year. Please let me know - Dave
Thanks so much for your support Dave. Unfortunately all of my 2025 calendars have sold out.
@@nightscapeimages.richard OH NO !!
Brilliant many thanks 🙏🏻
Richard you need to invest in a hat with a brim
I do have a few floating around . .left them home though.
hello Richard and community, another amazing nightscape photo thanks for all you videos and tutorials ^^
i have a question : is your Nikon z6 II partially or totally unfiltered please because i want to buy one and i don't know if i have to do this ?
Thanks for watching. It has what is known as a "Visible + h-alpha" modification. This is different to a "Full Spectrum" mod. You certainly don't have to do any modifications to a Nikon Z6ii to achieve wonderful images .. it just helps see more of the reds and pinks.
Hi Richard, I have wondered why do you use an A7SIII for videoing inverted of a Nikon which you would already have lenses for? Does the A7SIII really give that much better low light video?
Yes it sure does Ben . . it's "Night and Day" difference in very dark and high iso settings. For normal low light video you won't see much difference.
@@nightscapeimages.richard thanks for the reply. Do you use the 24mm f/1.4 GM on it?
@@bencollins7684 Yes I do use the Sony 24mm f1.4GM for all night scenes. For daytime video I tend to use a Tamron zoom lens.
@@nightscapeimages.richard thanks. I'm trying to decide whether to buy a Z30 or A7SIII for my travel docs. Money isn't a problem, but light weight and good night video is really important.
@@bencollins7684 Yes I understand your situation. The A7S3 is my choice for night video .. nothing else beats it in my opinion.
But yes the original RAW files have a lot more red than normal and I do considerable color correction in post.
meteor at @6:43 ? :)
You've got very good eyes ..!!!!
Do you have to contend with any venomous creatures out there at night?
Well as the weather warms up I do take a bit more care. Snakes, spiders and ants are the worst . .although the mosquitoes are terrible in the warmer weather.
Most of my milky way shooting happens in the cooler months where none of the above are an issue.
