I understand your dilemma. My Chanel bags with gold hardware basically sit on a shelf. My reissue 226 with the ruthenium hardware--I use all the time. I've been using it all week, in fact. I have both the 225 size and the 226 size. I am 5’5” and I can wear both crossbody, but the 225 size definitely looks much better worn crossbody. I usually carry the 226 double strapped as it looks kind of funny when worn crossbody...but I will crossbody it if I’m chasing after my toddlers! I’m not a fan of wearing big crossbody bags..it just looks sloppy in my opinion...but at 5’6” you can definitely get away with it.
I'm 5'7 and can wear my 226 cross-body. It's not supercool on me because I think the bag is a little too big for that PLUS I'm busty PLUS I have a short upper body - and that's in general not the best combination for wearing cross-body :D
