I've read a few different explanations, but this was the only one that made any sense and worked right away. Thanks so much! Also, I hope that someday my Spanish is as good as your English.
I followed your instructions carefully, but when I import the deck it is installing to a deck that I did not choose, what am I doing wrong? FYI I am "choosing" the specific created deck I made but it is not importing to the deck chosen
Thank you for the detailed instructions. May I suggest a different way and perhaps fewer steps for some users. My experiment uses Office 2003 (yes I am Neanderthal!!). 1. Open xls file in Excel 2. Save As..., select "Unicode Text (*.txt)". This file will be Unicode but NOT UTF-8 3. Open that file in Word, selecting Unicode as the encoding. 4. Save As..., select "Plain Text (*.txt)" and THEN choose UTF-8 as the encoding 5. Import the file into Anki Yes, please note, if your xls has data in more than two columns it seems Anki will reject rows with > 2 fields and will not add them to your deck.
+F Ehrhardt Or simpler still . . . if a simple two-column list is all that's needed, just type the list row-by-row in Notepad or some other plain text editor, then save the text file using UTF-8 encoding. 1. Open Notepad 2. Type line (row) 1, separating the two columns with a tab (or if Anki recognizes comma-separated columns, use the comma). Do the same for every pair (row/line). 3. After completing the list, click Save As: 4. In the Save as dialog box, give the file a name AND IMPORTANTLY, for the Save as type, choose UTF-8 encoding. 5. Import the file into Anki. If plain text is what's needed, then using a plain text editor is the simplest tool to use.
+F Ehrhardt even simpler in Google Sheets. Just choose File>Download as>.csv. And import the resulting .csv file into Anki. Takes less than a minute. No problems with three fields.
Thank you very much for your tutorial. Very useful for using google translate -> exporting to excel -> importing to Anki to review. With my Mac, there's no need to adjust to UTF-8, just copy word columns to Pages and export it to format text (txt) and it worked well! I've learnt a lot French vocabulary from this method ^_^
When I try to import my deck I only have one field that is being mapped and I can't get the second one to show up leaving me with only one side of the card when I go to study. Why is this and how can I get the other field to show up when importing?
I'm facing a problem: When I try to map my text into anki separating fields by tab, it only allows me to pick up 1 (one) field. It doesn't allow me to input other fields which would be the back of the cards with the answers.
Very useful tutorial. I started making a list of words (english - romanized japanese) in Google Docs and I copied/pasted what I have gathered so far in Open Office word processor (With the "paste special" option from the "Edit" dropdown menu) and exported it as a UTF-8 .txt file. I imported it and it works smoothly. So, gracias para tu ayuda!
super useful! thanks a lot! :D I have a question though: can I use a third field to add tags? and if so, would a need just one field to add as many tags as I want or do I have to do one tag per field? thanks again :)
Thanks. This was helpful. Regarding talking too much, don't worry what others have said. Everything was informative. Knowing what something does, for some, is better.
here you've got how to import using libreoffice, ignore the first instruction help.surveygizmo.com/help/article/link/encode-an-excel-file-to-utf-8-or-utf-16
Please, next time get to the point. Don't give a long story about MS Word, where Anki is used in the world and why there are different types of text file. Just tell us .... Do steps A - B - C -

Saved me about an hour of typing. Thanks.
I've watched many tutorials and this is the only that worked for me. Many thanks!

Thank you for this. I had to create 210 flashcards and I did not want to have to manually add them in. Thanks!
How do you import the tag field content? When I export a file from Anki, the tag info doesn't export. It seems to be lost in both directions.
I was wondering, how do you import to an already existing deck? Basically adding more cads to your deck using the method listed above.
When I try to import my deck I only have one field that is being mapped and I can't get the second one to show up leaving me with only one side of the card when I go to study. Why is this and how can I get the other field to show up when importing?
I can't say how much I appreciate this. Thank you.
thanks, i needed anki again after 3 years.

Have you tried exporting spreadsheet to a csl file and then import it to anki?

You saved me many hours of work. Thanks!
Is there any way to save the formatting on the spreadsheet (eg. underline, bold) when transferring the files?
I'm afraid we don't know.
