  • There must be so much pressure on authors to push out a second novel, especially after a successful debut, but sometimes it just doesn't work. Here are some of the second books that we felt didn't stack up to the debut anddd some great second novels for you to add to your TBRs!
    Pass 2nd novels
Come and Get It - Kiley Reid
    Nightbloom - Peace Adzo Medie
    The Future - Naomi Alderman
    Smash 2nd novels
    Hidden Fires - Sairish Hussain
    Blue Sisters - Coco Mellors
This is Fine - Poorna Bell

I thought "Such a Fun Age" was so MEH and then after seeing your review of "Come and Get It", I knew I couldn't waste another moment being curious about her second book.
I have both Coco Mellors books in my TBR and I am excited to read them one day soon (ish).
I think it was her third book, so maybe not relevant here but for me the most disappointing follow-up to a book that received critical acclaim was "You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty" by Akwaeke Emezi. "The Death of Vivek Oji" was such a stunning, profound book and then YMAFODWYB was so meandering and tedious by comparison. I couldn't believe they were written by the same person!

I feel the same about The Vanishing Half🫣 Brit Bennett is an incredible writer but I wasn't interested nor remember most of the story even now
