Harrier GR.3 - Better Than The GR.1 AND It's A Lower BR [War Thunder]

- The Harrier GR.3 is, as of current, the most advanced harrier in the British air tech tree, despite being a slightly lower BR than the GR.1. Because of this, in my opinion, it is the best of the two British tech tree harriers in War Thunder.

The GR1 honestly is overtiered these days. It did earn its 10.0 but you have to keep in mind, this was before we had so many planes with countermeasures and we actually had air spawns back then. Plus here are newer jets that are more powerful at 9.0-11.0 since this thing has moved up. It went from being overpowered, to still decent to underwhelming.
I disagree. Loik at other 9.7 and 10.0 premiums and you'll see it's still good at the BR. It's just the F-5C that is OP, amraams stop the GR.1 from going any lower.
@@Tentacl I don't think it should go down to 9.3 but I think it would be fine at 9.7. SRAAMs are great if you're under 1km away, but beyond that they start to drop pretty quickly. Beyond 1.2km is almost always a miss. While the GR1 is quick, other things out-accelerate and run it with ease meaning you have a brief gap to get a good lock. And we're not even talking about flare yet. If someone drops a flare, the missile is done.
It's not a useless jet. It's not even bad, it's just not that good anymore. It lacks flares and it's not that fast. I mean, lets be real, other Harriers have better missiles (because they aren't handicapped with such short range) and they have countermeasures and they are lower BRs... If they aren't gamebreaking, the GR1 won't be either at 9.7...
@@LegionOfEclaires I frankly think the GR3 is OP at 9.7, but I just play the Mid-21 SPS-K at 10+ BR, maybe people with more potent jets would agree.

At 5000m+ you can start using WEP. Probably my favorite jet in the game to play, but yeah, that engine overheat is brutal
I'm not sure if it's possible in this jet but in the American premium harrier Its definitely possible to get away with using 92% engine power without damaging the engine even at takeoff

Yea it was one of the planes I tried to do the summer task with: Rush in; drop the bombs on a zone; disengage; and go after occupied enemy players or just after bots; RTB and sometimes try to repeat. Sadly turned out I was wasting my time, do to the F4D started on 20 GJN on the market, and I do had to spend 2000(1998)GE on the plane tasks alone do to my work schedule.
But if I remember right that funny long nose supposed to house some extra electronics, and maybe even a basic radar.

Love this jet, hate it's repair cost. Ridiculously more than other 9.7's and 10.3's it faces.
That's likely because it's a popular one to do bomb runs with. The way gaijin balances is using player statistics. A plane earns a lot, rep cost goes up. A plane kills a lot, BR goes up.
@@MrEsphoenix I do know how they adjust the repair costs, my issue is that other jets at the same or higher can do what the GR3 does but better but have a lower repair cost. You rarely ever see a GR3 now and even before the repair cost sky rocketed. I do appreciate you responded to my comment and I wish you a great day!

With the Gr.7 coming hopefully next update it is really nice to see the british tech tree harrier get some attention, its a nice jet to fly and its very easy to control compared to other jets at its br range

Hey, can you make a video about SU-11 in 2022 or Mig-21s because i still confused which one is good for grind USSR tech tree. (Can't buy SU-7BMK because i only have $25 [5000GE])
I own the MiG 21 S, the premium one at 9.7. The plane itself is very capable but it sits at a unfortunate BR and being a USSR plane it faces USA a lot, which means F-5Cs all over the place. Just another case of a gunfighter jet obscured by not having flares. If I were you I’d find a way to save up for the Su-7 because I’m sure the grind is a breeze with that thing. Any premium that can bomb at least 1 base a game is super worth it.

Su-11 is currently broken under tiered at 7.0. It can get 8.0 full uptiers and still be super competitive. The plane should be 7.7 or something
Su-11 is mind-numbing but can give very, very good results if you can do basic combat. But your plane will stop researching effectively past rank 6. I have the Su-7BMK but I have never played it so I can’t give you any help there.
If you know how to play at that BR, the mig21S will be a better grinder

For the love of all that still makes sense in this damn game, for the love of all that's still fun and balanced, PLEASE give Italy the AV-8B+ in the tech tree when we finally get them in War Thunder.
And add the tornado before it's obsolete. It would really help round off Britain and Italy's air trees for the current top tier.

The GR1 is one of my most regretted purchases. It was absolutely busted, broken, and OP when it was first added at 9.3, but at 10.0 it just does have the speed or RWR to get in range with its SRAAMs or get altitude to dive on people with being slapped by a radar missile. Wish I could sell it.
It was for me too and then I’ve been playing it the last few days to grind in preparation of the new harrier and honestly it’s not nearly as bad as I was expecting. You just gotta flank with it and catch people in the furball. I had a game where I got 4 kills in about 30 seconds

Go spend some time in custom games with it and get your money's worth. It's great fun to just play around with. The AussieMantis custom is the best one.

Nothing beats sneaking behind the enemy back line and laying waste with the aim9g’s
Due to the thrust vectoring you can do insane stuff in a one on one dogfight - if anyone's around you well you're dead as a doornail but one on one if you're careful you can screw over F-5C's even

I might, but it depends on how big the sales are. I typically release those guides within a day of the sale starting.

You cannot always say that a premium player is bad when he has many deaths, I grind the Japanese tree with the premium F4EJ and I double my amount of points in sim by simply crashing after each bombing run… and repair costs are no factor for a premium, while I cry in every death with the F105D, 28k Repair costs in sim and you gain nothing.

Once you land, J out if/once fully repaired and it'll send you to the spawn screen again. Make sure you're actually fully repaired, so either you don't have the repair timer at the bottom at full stop landing, or wait for the repair timer. It's also useful if you didn't get damaged and want to get into the air faster, just J out and respawn fully loaded again. Big note: This does not work for ground battles, only air battles. So Air arcade, realistic, and simulator. If you J out in ground battles, you'll just lose the plane.

@@Tentacl You actually won't "lose" the plane by J outing in ground battles if you've finished the repair, as in getting a death and repair cost. But if you want to spawn in the plane again the spawn cost will be as if you had lost the plane.
Premiums are the problem free kills for you and the enemy but cost you or the enemy the win in the long run
The harrier gr7 could be intresting if at br11.0 Im guessing not that greath aa missiles compared to now, unless maybe the sraam 2 or what they are named. Im guessing its put there mainly on its ground based ordanance. And with no guns its realy relaying on those missiles as defence/offence

@@oliversearle3996 wouldent that be strange as they did not have them apparently in real life. They where planed but scraped as a failed part, from what I have understood. From what I have seen of dev leaks on it. It has them at one point and removed later on, on newer leaks. Maybe it had externals?
Not that it would be first time that stuff is not completely up to how it where real life in game.

I shit you not, Harriers sometime have Tomcats in their matches (no squaded up).
In sim that's possible with the GR1. In arcade and real they're outside the BR range.

You land, wait till you are fully repaired and put back on the runway.
Then hold J without having moved and without firing. Then select what you want and spawn back in.

How common are downtiers to 8.7?
Not incredibly common to 8.7, but there are a good amount of 9.0 and 9.3 downtiers - far more common than a full uptier or anything like that.
Are aim9G better than aim9B/Din any way?
They are much better than aim9 B's they are also better than aim9 D's as it has a wide seeker cone

7:33 The Aim-9D/G/H/L has an insane range, especially at those altitudes. I'd feel confident about slapping that target from 5km straight up with that starting altitude
Saying the plane with SRAAMS is worse than one that doesn’t is crazy, you play these 2 planes completely differently, VIFFing makes the harrier gr.1’s missiles much more deadly in knife fights. You’ve just scratched the surface of this aircraft. The gr.3 is just able to shoot less accurate missiles further.
The issue is that SRAAMS on the current platforms rely on other players incompetence. In a fight against anyone half competent the GR.1 is massively outclassed. Unfortunately there are a lot of incompetent players, and gaijin balance on statistics not capability.
Keep in mind it's not just performance, it also lacks RWR and flares, making it a sitting duck against higher tier missiles.
1vs1 you can hold a dogfight against mig(s) and f5(s)
GR1 should be a 9.7 at least

To be fair, the GR.1 is the worst Harrier of the four in game. And is the highest BR. I get why it got thrown to 10.0 but we're past those times
The SRAAMs are great but very situational missiles, I'd rather take the 9G's in most situations over SRAAMs. And GR.1 is the only one without flares, which are very important at this BR for a plane that can't out-maneuver or outrun almost any of its competition.

People that complain about GR. 1 are simply bad players. It has no countermeasures, bad missiles(only work if enemy has additional chromosome or is blind and gets within 1 km), flies like a brick and is slow(acceleration is nice tho). You can just boom and zoom it or missile it, and it's over.
That applies for SRAAM overall. Dir to the BR of the platforms they're on, they rely 100% on other players mistakes to close to effective range, and even then can be evaded if a player is aware and understands the basics.

I miss when the gr1 was 9.7 i believe it should go back to 9.7 10.0 is to much for it and don't say sraams are to OP for 9.7 because a10a early has aim 9Ls at 9.7 all aspect where as sraams are rear aspect only. And gr 1 doesn't have flares but the flare module is modeled in the cockpit.
I havent seen one in game before, and im not familiar with the difference between the gr1 gr3 and av8a/8c, but assuming it doesnt have wildly different missles/payloads im guessing they have just forgotten to adjust its br
@@kingderpington6082 the SRAAM is only available on the GR.1 and it's essentially an even more manoeuvrable R60 with a range of about 1-1.5km.
When it was introduced at 9.7 it fought a lot of planes that had no countermeasures and were slower than it.
Which created an issue with it. The GR1 is essentially only countered by planes that are faster than you (which no planes around 9.0 are) or have flares to counter the SRAAMS (as they are basically impossible to dodge). Not to mention the GR.1 has 4 SRAAMS as opposed 2 AIM-9Gs on other variants.
The main problem is that the SRAAM is completely broken against any 9.0 or lower plane. Because they are extremely hard to dodge, can't be flared at times (because the game sometimes only renders a missile a second or so after its launch, meaning it will hit you before you can react due to its short range).
Ultimately it's a victim of BR compression, broken when downtiered too much (8.7s should not face it (or for that matter the A-10). But it cannot fight good missiles much either, which are common at 10.7+ BR.
Ultimately though in the current MM, I'd rather have it at 10.0 then 9.7 solely because in a full downtier it's already dominant. (And yes, the premium A-10 should be moved to 10.0 as well).

Joy another cancer harrier to f up the 9.7 to 11.0 rank just what the game needs, also the way YAK-38's can Vtol it's just half as effective as the cancer harriers. As for the teamkilling they had a teamkiller who teamkilled and an ally killed the teamkiller for teamkilling good on em that's the proper way to deal with teamkillers so they can't teamkill again "thou shalt not suffer a teamkiller to live", shame Gaijin is too stupid to make it so you can kill them for doing it and not shell out for their vehicle. We should have a limited time where they effectively are free to kill they can still get the bill for teamkilling and pay for the vehicle they killed but we who shoot them down for doing it are free from the bill for theirs, it would fix the teamkilling issue.

It's certainly not the best, but it can be great in the hands of a skilled player.

@@jovaan5532 Actually there are other advantages, for example it can beat any other jet in the game in a vertical climb, and control better at stall speeds. Low to the deck it can outpace most other jets as well as easily out accelerating anything. With some T-vectoring (around 40° is the sweet spot) it can out turn a fair few jet's too, and due to it's PWR it can sustain the turn better than pretty much anything. It also has a fantastic roll rate, making defensive flying against faster jet's much more effective, again, with a great acceleration to get on their tail when they overshoot.
I'm not saying it's the best, but it can certainly be effective, and can really take people by surprise. If you go into a dogfight custom and find someone decent to fly against, you'll find them a tricky target to handle regardless of what you bring to fight them.

In a regular vertical fight other jets can catch it before it can stall them out.
Also it does not out turn most conventional jets.
It's sustain turn time is garbage.

There are tutorials out there, or as I said, you can practice in one of the dogfighting customs which is what I do. It's a very easy jet to keep a positive k/d with if you put in a bit of effort to learn how to use it.

@Citron 20012001 the gr1 has shit missles dude I have every premium and all of the tech tree for britain ground and air and even most of the naval side. I play them all so yes the gr1 is shit compared to the gr3 which has better missles
