Trance Bassline Tutorial (The 3 Basic Trance Basslines)

  • This FL Studio trance bass tutorial will show you how to make the 3 most basic uplifting trance basslines. These are the 3 fundamental underlying sub basslines that is used in most tracks. This is the foundation on which most basslines are built.
    The video will also show you how to make a mid bass drive to go along with the sub bass, as well as some basic percussion elements.
    This is a rather basic tutorial on how to make some trance basslines. There will usually be saturation, compression, delay, reverb and so on, but I wanted to make this video as short as possible with focus on the midi itself, so I didn't want to spend too much time on the actual mixing.
    I will make a longer and more detailed Trance drive tutorial later.

      You'd be surprised how many extremely basic questions you get when you make a video like this. I only state these things so that I don't have to spend so much time answering all those questions later on. For you and me, these things are obvious of course, but for a lot of people it will be quite confusing. Even the simplest most basic thing can be confusing for a beginner if it's not explicitly explained, even across videos.
      For example: In one video we might show how to get the levels right for a kick and a sub bass in relation to each other. Then, in a completely different and unrelated video we show how to sidechain. It's not uncommon for me to get questions like: "I'm confused! In video A the kick was at level "x", but in this video it's not. Why?"
      Things you and I don't really think about, but which can be difficult to grasp for some beginners. :)

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, late 90s / early 2000's trance bass lines are very simple compared to today's bass lines, and they are also covered in this video. This video focuses on the sub bass in the bass line, which is the main foundation of the bass line. That's where the power is. There are three main underlying bass lines when it comes to all kinds of, and this video cover those three.
      They are the same both in uplifting trance and in psy trance. The difference is that in uplifting trance you also tend to have rolling mid bass lines with different and somewhat more complex patterns layered on top if the main sub bass, while in psy trance you just have one main bass.
      Back in the early 2000's trance music used the same basic sub bass lines as today, either the classic off beat bass, or a rolling bass line. It's the same basic technique as covered in this video. Back then there were no daws like today, so everything you hear in those old classics was most likely made on hardware, and then recorded. That means that everything was structured much simpler than what you'll find in today's music. It still sounded great though :)

    If you use another bassline, some inovative...`sorry your track is not suitable for our record label`

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, unfortunately, this is often the case. I could make a whole video about this issue.
      It didn't use to be like this, but these days labels are very careful and they almost always go with the well known and familiar. At least the big ones.
      They will typically only sign artists who are already famous.
      Your track might be truly awesome, even better than what the top guys produce. Even so, 95% of the time they will go with the already known artist.
      Back in the 90s and early 2000 there was an explosion of new ideas and unique tracks. Today everything tend to sound the same.
      A label typically identifies with a typical sound, and that also causes producers signed to that label to try and make their tracks sound that same way.
      It's something that everyone is aware of, but nobody is willing, or able to do anything about it unfortunately.
      When everyone knows that their track won't get picked up by a label if it's too unique, different or original, then obviously nothing new and original will ever get made.
      I think everyone will agree that music, and especially trance music was a lot more varied and interesting back in the day. :)

      Thanks! Glad you liked it! I always try to make my tutorial videos clean and simple. My own workflow is often quite chaotic though, as you can see in this video where I recreated a James Dymond track: th-cam.com/video/t5FeKwW1yW4/w-d-xo.html
      I really think it would have helped a lot if FL Studio had a true folder track architecture in the playlist, like other daws have. :)

    • @Mrdjhappyman
      @Mrdjhappyman 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FireWalkMusic a new update has nested automation under the appropriate channel now thankfully. So that would clean an arrangement window up quite a bit since a lot of clips are usually a ton of automation lol.. I choose bitwig personally because of the cleanness of the whole workflow but still dabble in FL because it's very quick to get ideas down.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mrdjhappyman Indeed. It's a step in the right direction, but it's still just an automatic "group with above track" function. It's nothing like a true folder track architecture like in many other daws. The problem with "group with above" is that you can only group once. You have to choose between grouping either your automation with the correct track, or grouping all your elements together. You can't do both.
      For example, in Cubase I typically group all my percussion as one, all my leads as one and so on, and then the automation will still be linked with each respective track. The automatic nesting now kind of emulates that, but it comes at the expense of grouping similar elements together, so I hope they move to a true folder track architecture eventually. This will make organizing much better.

      Actually psy trance isn't that difficult as long as you know how to do it. It's a minimalist genre, so it's generally much easier to mix compared to uplifting trance for example, where you often have so much going on at the same time that it becomes almost impossible to mix without having phasing issues and such.

      That's a though one. Some people will argue that EDM is a genre on it's own, while others will say that EDM (electronic dance music) is a common description of ALL music made electronically.
      There are so many genres and sub genres today. You're not the only one who struggle with this. Not even the most fanatic supporters of any given genre will agree what belongs in which sub genre. Often times there is a very fine line, as a lot of music tend to incorporate elements from various genres. Is it tropical house or deep house? or both? is it tech trance or uplifting trance?
      It's an interesting topic for sure, and I will probably make a video about this eventually :)

    Hey FIREWALK
    I have been watching quietly for some time now your TUTORIALS and DAW PRODUCTION SKILLS on how to PRODUCE TRANCE . I personally think your one of the BEST TUTORS maybe even THE BEST. I also agree that TRANCE PRODUCTION is definatly one of the hardest GENRES to COMPOSE.
    My problem always seems to be when it comes to WRITING my THEME. I lose Track of time writing my THEMES spending more time on trying to SUMMARISE my arrangement within my THEME. But by the time i have finished laying down my MELODIES , RESOLVING CHORDS, LEADS MOTIVES and arrangement structure etc.
    I forget all the PERCUSSION and basic things like my EFFECTS for TENSION BUILD etc. I very rarely ever finish many TRACKS because of this BAD HABIT. Also i have tried to WRITE the other way round. But my love is the MELODIES & CHORDS & EUPHORICNESS of TRANCE. In your experience is this a habit that i need to get out of.
    Thanks also for the TIME & EFFORT you put into your VIDEO TUTORIALS. I,m sure many ppl who VISIT YOUR SITE like my self gain VALUABLE KNOWLEDGE and PERSONAL SKILL SETS from yourself. I would like to a see more in depth TUTORIAL on how to STRUCTURE A TRACK if like myself you get lost in SOUND DESIGN and the whole MELODIC STRUCTURE of a track and HOW TO OVERCOME WRITERS BLOCK if possible.
    THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR KNOWLEDGE WITH THE WORLD : )

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, glad you found the videos helpful. More trance related tutorials are planned. It sounds to me like you're making some classic mistakes here. As a producer you're always in a race against time in order to complete a track. You need to be able to get things down quickly, before ear fatigue sets in. At that point, you're going to be so sick and tired of listening to the track that chances are slim you'll ever finish it.
      There are ways to help prevent this, and some workflows work better than others. If you need help with your tracks, and general advice etc then I recommend using my feedback service. The link is in the description. :)

    is sidechaining the sub necessary if you shorten the kick to prevent the overlap?

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually, yes. Even when shortening the tail it will have to be extremely short in able to fit in between, and it wouldn't sound all that great. There will always bee a crossover point where the kick goes down while the sub goes up. The trick is to make it as short as possible without having it sound bad. You need some of that tail to make it sound natural.

      Trance bass-lines seem so easy on paper. But in reality they are really hard to get right. You usually can't do it with just one or two basses. You need a combination of basses that work well together, and this is the trick to a good trance bassline. You need to find a unique pattern that mixes well together, and the sounds also need to complement each other exactly the right way, or they'll end up fighting each other instead and sound bad.

    Hello,
    I have a question I can't seem to find an answer for.
    Maybe I'm coming at it from the wrong angle.
    I want to make some preset arpeggios for the FL Apreggiator in Piano Roll that I can reuse on other projects .
    My goal is,
    so I don't have to draw them in each time. FL has an arpeggiator in the piano roll with preset patterns or templates.
    Can I create and add my own templates to this?
    ...or shall I say...how do I save my arpeggios for the FL Studio Apreggiator ?
    Another simple explanation is:
    I want to write a simple trance pattern/rhythm and then save it as a pattern/template for use later.
    Thanks and Have an awesome day, or night or both.

    Know I’m late but you can shorten wave forms visually on fl studio, I can on mine and it’s older 😂 on the screen before going to envelope settings use the parameters and you can tighten from there 👍

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, this has been possible for quite some time, but that's not the same thing. In this example the kick sample is being cut off with volume automation basically, so the transient and the bulk of the body of the kick is preserved until the very last moment, when it's cut off. Basically just the last bit of the tail is cut off when you do it this way. If you use the in and out knobs in the sampler itself, you change the entire sample, basically fading it out from from the very start, which will cause it to loose most of it's energy early on. By doing it this way instead, you preserve the power for as long as possible, while at the same time removing that last bit that's causing mud and overlap. :)

    Its for uplifting Trance but whats difrente between uplifting bass and Classic trance base?

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say that in most modern trance the patterns are slightly more complex, because today we have sidechaining and other techniques that enable you to get away with more. If you tried that back in the days it would just sound muddy. Back then, you typically either had a single or two note bassline, and it was usually a single sound. Today we typically layer the mid-basses, so in most tracks there will be several bass sounds all playing as one.

      That will be a separate video. I've tried making long videos like that in the past, but it seems that every time I make a video longer than 20 minutes, people think it's too long. So I've decided to stay with short and to the point videos regarding the topic at hand. That means one video for sound design, one for gain staging, one for making a trance drive itself, one for doing the eqing and mixing and so on. If I were to include everything in one video it would potentially be hours. Overall, It's better to divide it into separate videos. That way, people who want to know about just the sound design, or just the layering for example, can then easily find videos regarding that exact subject and watch just that part. :)

    Would be amazing if you can make a walkthrough, if your psy-projekt is finished, or even sooner some other psytrance tutorials :D
    2:25 Are you sure, that is called Triplets? At least in german "Triole" is another type of bass, which seems to be slower than these 3 sixteenths notes.
    To check the ADSR of your kicks, you can also use LFO tool. It has an embedded oscilloscope (left side in the middle I think; but I do not own it, so I can not test it).
    I have one request: Could you make a tutorial about this kind of bass Neelix used here: th-cam.com/video/2H1IyExZ6q4/w-d-xo.htmlm50s
    I tried and tried but always failed. I dont know how this type is called so I cant even search for it. Would be really helpfull for my current project.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Thanks for the comment :) Yeah, I'm always trying to make my videos as short as possible, but in this case, as you said, there was a lot to cover. I actually felt like I was rushing it quite a bit. I've seen similar tutorials that's well over an hour. :)
      I wanted to focus on the basic midi itself in this one, so unfortunately I didn't get to cover things such as compression, reverb etc. That would have made the video a lot longer. But I'll be making another trance related tutorial later, which will be going into more detail. That video will be a lot longer, but will also include a lot more.
      In trance music, this kind of bassline is called tripplets. But in other genres people may have different names for what's basically the same pattern. :)
      Yeah, I usually use LFO tool myself. Great plugin! But I realize that not everyone, especially not beginners is going to have access to all kinds of third party plugins, so I always try to show how to do thing using stock plugins whenever I can :)
      Sure, I will try to get around to making some psy trance too eventually.
      That Neelix track sounds like it has a standard off beat bass that has been compressed to bring out more of the attack. That will help creates that snappy sound on it. It's probably eq'd to bring out that "click" of the bass more too.
      In psy trance it's quite common to boost the exact tonal frequency of the note itself. For example if you're in F3 then the frequency of that note would be 174.61 HZ. If you boost at that exact frequency, it will make the tone of the bass stand out in a very unique way. You would typically shave out a bit of the resonance frequency, usually an octave up, at F4. And then there's the matter of making sure that the kick and the bass glues perfectly together, and making sure that they don't overlap at all.
      Many psy trance producers prefer to render out the bass as a sample and trigger those instead, because some don't trust the retriggering in the synths.. But also because this makes it easy to cut off the note completely using an envelope to get that short cut off note.
      Kind of difficult to explain.. I will try to make a tutorial about this eventually :)
