They still stream it free on Pluto tv. I catch it before they put Beavis and Butthead on lol....which is where Daria actually originated from...and King of the Hill. Still trips me out to this day.

@@alissajadyn Would you consider doing a video essay on Malcolm in the Middle's finale? I can see why Malcolm would never come back to his roots, much less be accepting of them.

Amazing how well Daria holds up. All you have to do is give everyone in the series smartphones and social media. That's it; that's all you need to update the show.

I always liked how the show framed Jodie and Daria’s relationship because when you think about it, Jodie was the only one of Daria’s peers whose opinion she valued (other than Jane who was her only friend, obviously) and whose disapproval made her really reconsider and reevaluate her point of view on something.
I think that says a lot because although they were definitely on friendly terms, Daria was never as close with Jodie as she was with Jane, who was essentially her only friend throughout high school. I think showing the impact of Jodie’s opinion on Daria was a great way to convey the level of Jodie’s integrity and character.

What I like so much about Jodie's situation with her parents is exactly what you said in the video and that its honestly the most realistic portrayal of a "successful" black family. As a child of two parents who weren't well off at my age, they're constantly supporting me with everything while also having extreme expectations for me that stem from them being happy that I don't have to go through their struggles while also being jealous for the same reason. And not only that but, Daria is set in the1990s and if we're considering how old Jodie's mom is, she was a 20 something black woman during the 1970s so she definitely experienced heavy racism trying to succeed and progress in her careers. That's why I feel like she was extremely defensive towards Helen throughout the episode 💀

    Excellent video (and happy birthday!)
The Jodie-Daria episodes were always among my favorite in the series. They're both intelligent teenage girls, but otherwise have to really dig to find anything they might have in common. And their dynamic is interesting to me as Daria so rarely gets pushback from someone who's on her level. (Jane isn't dumb by any means, but her talents and aspirations are on a completely different wavelength so she would never be in the kind of situations Daria often finds herself when she and Jodie intersect)

Yes, at the beginning Jane said “I knew those straight C’s would pay off” in response to Jodie and Daria getting picked. Jane doesn’t really care to excel academically. But is still not trying to fail. She puts in just enough work

  • @ajstudios9210
    @ajstudios9210 หลายเดือนก่อน +36

7:59 I always interpreted her response at being forced to decide her career when you are 18 or 19, which is still your teens. She's right about this because by our late teens, picking a major that relates to your chosen career path, like majoring in biochemistry to become a general doctor, when you hit 18 is just that. While you can argue no one is forcing her to choose, a lot of times older adults (parents, teachers, principal, guidance counselor) and your peers will push the idea of choosing a major and picking a career path even if you might not be sure you what you want to choose. The culture we live in pushes that idea because that is what is expected and you are pressured into making a decision more often then not. It's not like this for every highschool senior but it is for most and it was especially like that when I was in highschool years ago, too. Nowadays, people are way more accepting of taking a gap year or not going to college at all and doing other things with early adulthood. But back then, even if some people were doing that most of us were encouraged to choose a major and a lot of times, people pushed the idea of going into the medical field, especially when nursing was becoming a top career choice for high school grads.

I agree with everything except the 18-19 part. No you’re not mature at that age yet, but you’re ultimately classified as an adult once you’re 18. Especially by the government’s standards considering at that age you can adopt, get married, buy explosives, travel to the airport alone with a passport, start college, and drive without a permit. Most of those things you can’t do legally underage.

The Landons and the Morgendorffers interacting with one another was the most interesting part of the episode to me.
With the way Jodie has business ideas such as creating a consultant firm for minority start-ups, I wonder if Andrew and Michelle shoot down those ideas or encourage them in private.

I always enjoy your Daria breakdowns. I really enjoyed seeing Jodie's character in the show and I wish we did get more of her. Success is a combination of skill/social capital and luck. Daria and Jodie understand this at a young age and know they are deliberate with their actions. I also love the Quinn storyline as well because it continues to emphasize that Quinn doesn't have any true friends that she is comfortable with at Lawndale. I would have loved a scene where Jane or Quinn tell Daria about their weekend together.

    Great video!!
To answer the question at the end I do think we unfortunately live in a world where even with high merit, networking is just absolutely critical to really get where you want to be, especially for minorities. At least, that's how it seems to be in my experience, which sucks cuz I am nooooot good at social interactions lmao.
I'm glad you pointed out Daria's strong point of not conforming unnecessarily because constant boot licking of people that don't even deserve it is just such a huge mental strain. Unfortunately I've only really now come to realize this and change my ways, through project groups during my current time in uni, but better late than never.
While the cultural context was different, I do relate to Jodie in regards to her parents and how their backgrounds affected their parenting as my own parents were pretty significantly harsh about academics for most of my childhood and teens, entirely motivated by how they themselves weren't really well off and didn't want their children to suffer the same in any case. Oddly, even though it was pretty depressing that my grades declined over the years and I had some serious struggles in Uni, I am thankful that those situations did at least make my parents loosen up and try to be supportive in ways that are healthier for all of us.

This show's refusal to portray anybody with simple, black-and-white, right-and-wrong mentality is amazing. Helen was obviously in the wrong and out-of-pocket for assuming these two random Black adults were Jodie's parents but at the same time Michelle got needlessly defensive and hostile when Helen obviously had good intentions during their conversations

I remember ages back a Daria reboot was announced, with the twist that the focus was to be on a dynamic between Daria and Jodie, and a lot of people thought this sounded like a bad idea. Im assuming that the project eventually fell through, and honestly, there's a chance that it would've been weak, but I actually kind of got the idea the people behind it were going for. They don't hang out a ton but Jodie in the original does have the ability to challenge and push Daria in ways basically no one amongst her peers really can. Even Jane is in a lot of ways an enabler of her worst instincts and beliefs. I dunno, I have a hard time imagining a series where Daria and Jodie would be good friends, but a series which found other ways to push them together could've been really interesting.

18:18 I never liked when Jodie did that because that was uncalled for. Plus, she's supposed to be Brittney's friend and Brittney didn't even do anything. I know Brittney is a bit dense and annoying but loosening up doesn't mean she can just put others down when they didn't deserve it.

The ability to make connections without being an in-depth scholar could be as respectable because communication skills like that already take a level of conversation navigation intelligence. But, I still wish more popular and successful people were brains like Daria. People like her are a breath of fresh air even though she's sometimes abrasive.
