At age 78 and former folk singer (very former) I can safely say that Rhiannon Giddens is one of those rare talents that comes to maturity only with dedication, education, research and tenacity from a mysterious well of creativity in a precious soul.
Yes--the MacArthur Foundation recognized her immense skill, knowledge, and talent with one of their famous no-strings-attached "genius grants" which I'm sure helped her greatly in her journey. She wouldn't have gotten that if she weren't already phenomenal.
My oldest Daughter "30" at the time and is autistic She just sees the world in different way.When the healing song came on at 47.Said Dad this song makes me want to dance barefoot at night in cool grass it would make all our bad thoughts go away.So when We got home She took Her 2 year old Daughter out in the yard and they danced barefoot in the cool grass tiill 11am
Don’t know if you noticed but rhiannon was probably barefoot throughout this concert….even if she starts with shoes on I don’t know that I have ever seen her get all the way through a concert with them on. :-)

Thank you Met and Thank you Rhiannon Giddens for giving us music with nuance, beauty, power and history that reveals more than we've ever been taught. And Thank you Francesco for bringing sounds of the Mediterranean and beyond. Fabulous concert.
It's difficult not to be blown away by the sheer talent here. What a hauntingly beautiful voice, combined with such incredible musicianship, coming together in powerful songs. I hope this music reaches the widest audience possible. It's a gift to the world.

Just home from the closing performance of her magnificent collaboration, the LA Opera's OMAR. Her pre-performance talk with co-composer Michael Abels was a model of clarity and kindness. Now sobbing again. What an artist, polymath indeed.
