    If you’ve ever had the opportunity to be invited to dinner by a Gujarati family, you may be familiar with this particular dish called daar. It is traditionally made out of lentils and has a sweet, spicy and tangy flavor which accentuates any dish. This “soup” is so flavorful that many people are known to enjoy it as is or with a side of rice. The Instant Pot has made this traditional Gujarati dish, normally a chore to make, a breeze.

    Thank you! It was amazing recipe! I had a slight variation to. I didn’t have tomato sauce so I chopped fresh tomatoes and put it in the initial step with the daal for pressure along with two green chillies (I guess if someone wants it a bit spicier). I also added the curry leaves when I was doing the tempering part instead at the end. Thanks for always sharing awesome videos!

    Used my instapot to make this Daal. The instapot timing was perfect and Daal turned out great. I like my Daal with less tomato, so next time I will cut the amount of tomato sauce in half.

    Love your videos. I really appreciate that you say the Indian names for spices, I've been trying to learn them for years but people seem to default to English making it tricky when I'm in India and speaking to someone with no English.

    This is the first I have heard anyone use the term or the spelling Daar.
    Al through out TH-cam, everyone says Dal. Same thing when I go to the local Eastern Indian Grocery Store. And the store that I go to has everything, including all of the Spices, a large variety of Dal, Rice, and Cookware. Learn something everyday.🤷‍♂️

    Hi Poonam,
    Thanks for posting this video. Tuvar dal is my absolute favorite! Can't wait to try it out.
    I have a suggestion, for your videos, if you could post all the ingredients in the video description, it would be easier for the viewers to make a note of it. Just a thought. Otherwise, I think your videos are great. Thanks once again.

    Hi Poonam - For whatever reason the silver prong doesnt come up fast.. It always takes at least 4 to 5 mins before the cooking actually starts. I have the new DUO model. Thanks - Love your videos!

    • @InstapottinWithPoonam
      @InstapottinWithPoonam  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MV D Hi! This is very normal for the silver prong to take time to come up; it means that the pressure is building up. It will typically take 4-5 minutes and may take even longer if you have more liquid or larger quantities in the instant pot. Thanks for tuning in!

    Loved the dal, but I manually released the steam after 5 mins and along with the steam spurting out, there was dal water everywhere :( Any suggestions on how to avoid this? Should I just wait for a natural release next time?

    • @InstapottinWithPoonam
      @InstapottinWithPoonam  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Shrina Shah Hi! Yes, you should wait for a little while for natural release and then do the manual release to avoid this.

    I don't have a hand blender (immersion). Could I blend the soaked lentils in the blender prior to cooking, or would that screw it up?

    • @InstapottinWithPoonam
      @InstapottinWithPoonam  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +nightly starlight I would cook the lentils then blend in a regular blender and then put them back in the pot to proceed with the next steps.

    Why do you bother with dirtying two pots? Wouldn’t it be easier just to do everything in the Instant Pot?

    • @InstapottinWithPoonam
      @InstapottinWithPoonam  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Heathen Hearth I am also not a fan of having to use multiple pots but in this particular case, the tempering part must be done separately. This process is where most of the flavor come from.

    If I am correct its called "DAAL" and not DAAR.

    • @InstapottinWithPoonam
      @InstapottinWithPoonam  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The area of India my family comes from (Gujarat) say daar, but daal is also correct. This video is for how to make Gujarati daar, traditionally eaten with rice and raita.
