Back in the early '80s there were people who built motorized carts like this and ran them in Carrizo Gorge. Unfortunately they had no muffler so they were incredibly loud and scared off all the wildlife for miles around. Also, they had no lights, which was a real problem when they happened to catch my brother and me while we were hiking after dark across a long trestle that had no walkways. They couldn't see us, and because of the noisy engine they couldn't hear us either. We just barely avoided being knocked off the trestle.
I love seeing wildlife when I'm out hiking. That's why this cart has no engine. I get away from the city to get away from all the noise. Thanks for watching, sharing your story and subscribing
You are patient man and definitely brilliant. I would cheat and just use a trailer to transport cart then you'd have more riding time. Beautiful surroundings and the music was perfect.
Great ingenuity on the build! Thanks so much for this! A bike flipped over driving a belt on a large flat platform... Perfect! I have this little idea in mind that I've yet to see, build a "Rider" similar to yours, but make it a licensed "utility trailer" that can be pulled to the starting point. Remove the trailer wheels and axle, stash them in the car and away we go. Leave the 3' long trailer tongue in place to use as a turnaround lever/camera mount.

When I originally built the rail cart, I put a belt drive on it. I think the belt drive was slipping a little bit, so I wanted to try a chain. But now after trying the chain, I want the belt drive back and I would also like to add the l gear derailleur back on there. And yes I've considered an electric motor but that means I'd have to carry a heavy battery. And this is designed so I could carry my whole cart around the landslide, a cave-in or locked gate. So I don't want to be carrying a heavy battery.
Congrats.... I'm sure you will be making improvements as needed. If you start to have problems with you knees. I suggest you move your seat back 3-4 inches.... Good luck and happy viewing....
That looks like the old Keiser Steel line in Desert Center. It goes from the Salt N Sea area at the 86 all the way to the abandon Keiser Steel open pit mine, north of Desert Center, California. There is a portion of the line that has been washed out, going towards the 86.

The rails on the Kaiser Railroad (AKA the Eagle Mountain railroad) have all been removed. This work was completed in 2018. Didn't want you to go all the way there and be disappointed.
@@craul8459 I thought the tracks between Ferrum and just beyond the Salt Creek bridge were still in place, along with some stretches north of there past Summit to the I-10 bridge and maybe even a few scattered stretches up to Eagle Mountain. I read somewhere that the removal of the Salt Creek bridge was scheduled for 2020 but was delayed. Where did you see all the track was gone?

I did see from a recent video that the salt creek bridge is still intact, including rail, according to the date on the video.
Over the years, without success, the San Diego rail road museum, has tried to repair and re-open the line for passenger rides. The line was recently sold to a new company, hoping to re-open the line for freight service
I'm still working on mine. I'm getting pretty close. I'm using a 7.5 hp engine with a torque converter. Depending on conditions, I might eventually add a mast and a sail.
I've been researching building one if these and have come to the conclusion that the only way to do this is a completely human powered cart ! Motors run out of gas / break down , batteries go dead , depending on how far down the line you are (even if it's a mile) that's not gonna be fun to push it back to where you started ! Bringing extra parts for a setup like yours takes up very little room and the weight isn't an issue ! As of lately when i watch a cart video, even if it's other than human powered, i check out the building approach .... yours is the most practical yet ! Have you figured out a way to turn it around yet ? Great video and have fun !
Yes, I have figured out how to turn it around. I have a post that flips down. I just had to find Center weight area on the cart. I love this build. I love how quiet it is. That way I still see big horn sheep 🐑 and other wildlife. I might purchase an E bike wheel kit to make it battery powered and peddle
If I'm not mistaken, that is the old Kaiser Steel mine track. It goes from Desert Center to the 86 past Salt N Sea. You can make the whole run, but there are a couple of wash outs (one is about 50 yards long) which you will need to carry your cart over. It's well worth it. Just make sure you don't do it in the summer.

Fantastic work, I've built something like this myself however I used crane wheels which seem to work okay but not great, may I ask where you got yours?
I'm considering using inflated tires on a fix frame, type sold at harbor freight, adding spring loaded side wheels to keep aligned on track. Get all wheels for under 100 dollars. Drive a single or even both with a drop down axle with its own tire/tires if both sides are driven.
Now that I've had a day to ponder the spring loaded side wheels I realized that if you come to a crossing there will be no clearance for the wheels. Oops! Oh well better to have thought about it than not at all! Maybe the side wheel could work if it was narrow Ike 1-2" and riding at a 45° angle to get clearance from the obstructions when going through road crossings?

Hi John, thank you for subscribing! The drone I use is DJI Spark with a remote. It uses WiFi to my phone. It is a great drone. The body is smaller than my Samsung galaxy s7. I also use an Samsung tablet to fly the drone. This drone has active track to follow you, tripod mode for super smooth flying, sport mode for super fast flying and a handful of other modes. Dang it, I don't remember. That distance is adjustable on my axles. I have a 1/4" set screw on each wheel so I can adjust the spacing as needed. I did have to adjust the spacing to clear narrow parts and not derail on the wide parts. It seems that there isn't a need for the heads on the bolts. Cut them off and use larger diameter pin. Hole lot easier putting it together. Just a thought. Where did ya get the wheels as that seems to be very expensive when putting one of these together. I've looked into polyurethane covered steel core but ones that support 1000 lbs are way too much money.

Thanks, my Man! Yes, I was able to shift while riding. I don't remember what gear I was in or how many gears that bike has. If I was home, I'd go out to the garage and count them. I'm in Tampa Florida right now ( do you know of any abandoned tracks out here?) The derailleur was not working properly, so I took it off. I also switched to chain drive since this video but would like to try a 16" wheel and belt. the 26" required too much torque when traveling uphill. Thanks for watching and subscribing, My MAN!
Awesome setup. Too bad this line was already scrapped and had the rails pulled up. Not too many places to do this without running into either railroad cops, or someone snitching you out anonymously. In the US, it's all about "protecting and serving the fuck out of you". As far as legal spots to do this, there's a couple of abandoned rail lines that have been turned into "rail-biking" tour spots. I don't know how they'd feel about you using your own rig though. With the countless spurs and branchlines going into abandonment, it would be an awesome idea to buy it out, keep the rails in, and turn it into an actual, MUP path. Hike, bike, horse, and now rail bike!!
@@pappysproductions Thank you, I built mine small enough to fit like a back pack with telecoping axles, gas bike engine, just need to get the right weight wheels to make it light enough to travel with. Those wheels are a good deal, but I think I will end up having to machine aluminum hubs with a steel ring on the outside.

This is the san Diego and Arizona eastern railroad. This railroad will soon be reactivated. That's why part of the track in the thumbnail looks so new, They are going to run trains here again.
This looks to me as newly built railroad but in 19th century fashion, low quality just like for a movie set, not for real trains. That track could only handle very light and slow trains, if any...

Thanks, my man! The 26" wheel ended up being a lil too hard to peddle. I ended up switching to a chain and sprocket and took off the derailer. I'd say it weighs about 75-100 lbs. It would need a steel tyre on them in the same way a railway rolling stock wheel needs a steel tyre on the softer wheel metal. Aluminium would wear out quite fast.
@@geraldlrstubbs I don't think he'd ride that much to have aluminium wheels wear out that fast. Besides cart itself is quite light. However, using aluminium instead of steel wheels would make the cart even lighter and easier to carry around.
Whatever wheels you choose to use, try to get or make them in conical shape. Conical shape will reduce wear and rolling resistance, increase stability and reduce chance of derailment. Wheel flanges should never (or very rarely) touch the rails.
The build?.... a lot of thinking, MacGyvering and figuring. Cutting the mtn bike frame and making an angled post to fit the angle of the cut on the frame. I wish i had videoed all that. Thank u for watching and subscribing my man!

as a child i use to walk the tracks to school. my favorite time of day. i will try and build something more basic andless parts. maybe with a e bike. im 65 not into peddling. his is good but to much jacking around for me at 65
@@pappysproductions No, it is just that I have seen some bicycles fitted with a guide on the front wheel and an 'a' frame to make an outrigger which probably weigh less than 10Kg and take under ten minutes to set up. Your outfit does not seem to do more than them but is substantially heavier and more cumbersome. Is there a reason that you needed a large, flat platform ?

I have seen foldable carts as in Philippines people use it as public transport it has a small gas engine and removable deck with some crude wooden bench ..set of two detachable wheels a pully n belt.... do check it out for more practical n fast to assemble rail car....surely it will be very helpful to u ....assemble n disassemble in breeze..👍🏽👍🏽
Yes, those videos were very inspirational to me and my build. Remember, my cart is designed to be moved and transported by ONE person... Me! Watch my second maiden cart video. I had to get by 2 locked tunnel gates. Had my pieces not fit under, I would have had to hike everything around the mountain.

You could. The desert gets up in the triple digits. I'd need a canopy

Fantastic work, I've built something like this myself however I used crane wheels which seem to work okay but not great, may I ask where you got yours?

I'm considering using inflated tires on a fix frame, type sold at harbor freight, adding spring loaded side wheels to keep aligned on track. Get all wheels for under 100 dollars. Drive a single or even both with a drop down axle with its own tire/tires if both sides are driven.
Now that I've had a day to ponder the spring loaded side wheels I realized that if you come to a crossing there will be no clearance for the wheels. Oops! Oh well better to have thought about it than not at all! Maybe the side wheel could work if it was narrow

The drone I use is DJI Spark with a remote.
It uses WiFi to my phone. It is a great drone. The body is smaller than my Samsung galaxy s7.
I also use an Samsung tablet to fly the drone. This drone has active track to follow you, tripod mode for super smooth flying, sport mode for super fast flying and a handful of other modes. Getting ready to build . I know the track spacing is 4' 8 1/2" ,how wide did you space your wheels from flange to flange ?
Dang it, I don't remember.
That distance is adjustable on my axles. I have a 1/4" set screw on each wheel so I can adjust the spacing as needed. I did have to adjust the spacing to clear narrow parts and not derail on the wide parts. It seems that there isn't a need for the heads on the bolts. Cut them off and use larger diameter pin. Hole lot easier putting it together. Just a thought. Where did ya get the wheels as that seems to be very expensive when putting one of these together. I've looked into polyurethane covered steel core but ones that support 1000 lbs are way too much money.
Never thought about cutting off the heads, but I think you're right. It would speed up my assembly.

There are 2 consecutive locked gates that required me to disassemble the Kart and re assemble it. Further down the line are cave ins, land slides and other obstacles. Thanks, my Man! Yes, I was able to shift while riding. I don't remember what gear I was in or how many gears that bike has. If I was home, I'd go out to the garage and count them. I'm in Tampa Florida right now ( do you know of any abandoned tracks out here?) The derailleur was not working properly, so I took it off. I also switched to chain drive since this video but would like to try a 16" wheel and belt. the 26" required too much torque when traveling uphill. Thanks for watching and subscribing, My MAN!

Awesome setup. Too bad this line was already scrapped and had the rails pulled up. Not too many places to do this without running into either railroad cops, or someone snitching you out anonymously. In the US, it's all about "protecting and serving the fuck out of you".
As far as legal spots to do this, there's a couple of abandoned rail lines that have been turned into "rail-biking" tour spots. I don't know how they'd feel about you using your own rig though. With the countless spurs and branchlines going into abandonment, it would be an awesome idea to buy it out, keep the rails in, and turn it into an actual, MUP path. Hike, bike, horse, and now rail bike!!

@@pappysproductions Thank you, I built mine small enough to fit like a back pack with telecoping axles, gas bike engine, just need to get the right weight wheels to make it light enough to travel with. Those wheels are a good deal, but I think I will end up having to machine aluminum hubs with a steel ring on the outside.

How come we saw what looked like a bicycle chain ring sprocket at one point and at another point we see the belt drive pulls. Have you considered making a gas or electric motor rail cart..
When I originally built the rail cart, I put a belt drive on it. I think the belt drive was slipping a little bit, so I wanted to try a chain. But now after trying the chain, I want the belt drive back and I would also like to add the l gear derailleur back on there. And yes I've considered an electric motor but that means I'd have to carry a heavy battery. And this is designed so I could carry my whole cart around the landslide, a cave-in or locked gate. So I don't want to be carrying a heavy battery.

This is the san Diego and Arizona eastern railroad. This railroad will soon be reactivated. That's why part of the track in the thumbnail looks so new, They are going to run trains here again.
As of January 2018, Baja California Railroad was assessing the line before beginning repairs to allow it to return to operation.
This looks to me as newly built railroad but in 19th century fashion, low quality just like for a movie set, not for real trains. That track could only handle very light and slow trains, if any...

Thanks, my man! The 26" wheel ended up being a lil too hard to peddle. I ended up switching to a chain and sprocket and took off the derailer. I'd say it weighs about 75-100 lbs.

It would need a steel tyre on them in the same way a railway rolling stock wheel needs a steel tyre on the softer wheel metal. Aluminium would wear out quite fast.

@@geraldlrstubbs I don't think he'd ride that much to have aluminium wheels wear out that fast. Besides cart itself is quite light. However, using aluminium instead of steel wheels would make the cart even lighter and easier to carry around.
Whatever wheels you choose to use, try to get or make them in conical shape. Conical shape will reduce wear and rolling resistance, increase stability and reduce chance of derailment. Wheel flanges should never (or very rarely) touch the rails.

Too many cave ins and rock slides over the years. The reason for my, folding,- no tools required, design was to easily get around these cave ins and rock slides, by myself.

@@pappysproductions No, it is just that I have seen some bicycles fitted with a guide on the front wheel and an 'a' frame to make an outrigger which probably weigh less than 10Kg and take under ten minutes to set up. Your outfit does not seem to do more than them but is substantially heavier and more cumbersome. Is there a reason that you needed a large, flat platform ?

I have seen foldable carts as in Philippines people use it as public transport it has a small gas engine and removable deck with some crude wooden bench ..set of two detachable wheels a pully n belt.... do check it out for more practical n fast to assemble rail car....surely it will be very helpful to u ....assemble n disassemble in breeze..👍🏽👍🏽
