Man, thank you so much for this video!!! I am a 54 yo single mom of 20 years and trying out different hobbies and home/yard self repairs these days. The other guy was such a bonehead (sorry, other guy, but you were - throwing out your instructions and downplaying everything, even though you had never used a lathe before). Anyway, my sister accidently threw out my instructions, so I came back on and found you!!! Mine is a little different (year 2021) - my faceplate is tiny, and the motor nobs slightly different, but other than that, exactly the same. I paid $158 for mine. I just turned it on - so excited to get going!!!! I'm going to do the same as you at first...just taking it for a few spins with different chisels. I got two sets - a set of 6 flats chisels, all different sizes and a set of the basic 8 - these are much bigger handles. I also go a $55 chuck - not sure if I needed to get that or not. Thank you!!! You have made me more motivated and less intimated to get going on this!! 🥰
I saw that bonehead's video, too. I quit that video and came here instead. Can't wait to see the rest of this now that I saw he kept the instructions HAHA
@@jonesmachineco I just finished watching your whole video and see this comment above about the chuck. What's the advantage of using a chuck? I just ordered my Wen a couple hours ago so since I have nothing to look at for reference yet, which end does the chuck replace?
*As usual, Wen puts out an excellent **MyBest.Tools** well made product at a very reasonable price. Cast iron, portable, table top lathe. Pen turning with ease. An excellent purchase.*
Excellent video thank you! If you're in the UK, this is the same lathe as the Vevor 8 x 12 and the axminster AW205WL. I couldn't find a video for those specifically but I'm glad I found this. Everything you needed to know!
Hi man, great video. I wanted to ask you, what is the chuck size for these models of lathes? I have the WL330 model that would be the brother of this one that you have.
We still use it daily. It’s been a good machine. The handles need to be improved but are easy to fix my replacing the cotter pins with screws, The motor also trips at heavy resistance, this is to protect the motor windings but I think it’s set pretty low.
Probably not that great, lathe lacks the torque needed for good hardwood turning. You would need something like this. www.amazon.com/dp/B00F2ZC33K/?ref=exp_derekjones_dp_vv_mw A lot more money but a much higher quality machine
Great video, thanks for posting. I've been researching wood lathes and the Wen is considerably cheaper than even the Harbor Freight lathe. From the video, it even appears to be of higher quality. I think I may just pull the trigger on the Wen in the next couple of months!
I find that it keeps bogging down to a stop when using the roughing gouge. Is it seriously underpowered? Just trying on a 2x2. How can anyone make something if the piece keeps bogging down?
I’m not familiar with that brand although most of mine had to be sharpened. Definitely needs to be lighter cuts, compared to a larger lathe. Typically we only Trip it out when we take large deep cuts
Okay...I solved the problem! Turns out I did not have the center point embedded into the wood! So the lathe just kept slipping and the wood wouldn't turn! I guess you need to really hammer it in there! All is good now.
So are there any decently priced chucks and drill chucks? I ask because I am getting into this and I am going to buy a lathe but I am also looking for a chuck and drill chuck but everything is so darned expensive.
Mr. Jones, I want to make Queen Anne (wooden) dolls and I am shopping for a lathe. I found this (Wen) one on the Home Depot website, and thought perhaps there might be a video with someone (like yourself) using it. Bingo! I would like to know your opinion on if this lathe could trim Bass Wood. I believe it is Bass Wood I need to make figures with. .... Thank you for your time. Corliss
Well it’s a pretty decent machine I think it might be a little small and under powered for what you’re talking about. Might I suggest this machine instead? Larger build volume www.amazon.com/dp/B01426DJ78/?ref=exp_derekjones_dp_vv_mw
@@jonesmachineco yeah, that really does suck. Tell you what.....I’m sort of a big deal on the harmonica circuits, I’ll whip you up a couple sweet jams and send’em right over. Dude, we’re gonna take over the world😆😆🤙🏾.

Dude, just a friendly tip, not to criticise, but you're going about it all wrong. I bet since this video you've had a tool flip out of your hand huh. That guard is there for your finger to rest on.

That’s so awesome! I’m so glad, you will love having a chuck, let me know how it goes! Very excited for you!
Just please make sure you bolt down the lathe. I know of people that have seriously injured themselves.

@@jonesmachineco it's perfect thank you for taking the time to show it all.
Can the power chord be unattached/removed from the lathe?
Not on my model, but wouldn’t be a hard modification
I absolutely LOVED the chipmunk voice instructions!
I hope you enjoy it!

Moving into a glorified studio soon, wanted a lathe to do some hobby projects on, this sure looks neat.
Have bunch in my store in the links below I say do it
HAHA!!! "Its got a nice manual with it." *chucks it to the side*
Lol!
The reviews online weren't that good but I still want to try this one out. How is it holding up for you?
We still use it daily. It’s been a good machine.

The motor also trips at heavy resistance, this is to protect the motor windings but I think it’s set pretty low.
Is this the 3420 model that has a 2A motor that is discontinued? Or the new model 3421 with a 3.2 A motor?
I have a link that takes you to the actual model in the description
With a 23inch extension would this be good for making baseball bats?

How loud would you say this exact lathe is?
It’s not to bad, I never needed ear protection.

How sharp is your tool. I’ve had it big with Derp cuts or full tools.
Dull tools

Yep up to 8 inches
