I remember when this game was just called Sherwood, there was no dungeon, no quests, just knights hanging out in the woods chatting, killing monsters and eachother.

Oh boy, this took me to a trip down memory lane!
This was my first MMO in 2007. I met some wonderful people along the way, and we'd always hang out in Teleport 5 and talk about whatever comes in mind lol.
If one of you guys out there saw this comment by chance, I hope you're doing well in life. I went by the name of "Ryzen" for much of my time in this game.

@@DystopiaEU I used to be in Keepers of Soul (KS) for a short while. That was the last clan I joined before I stopped playing altogether.
Another one is "V" (Five). Can't say it's a proper clan, but more like a group of players that decided to hang out at Teleport 5. Kappa, Billoutae, and Ice are some the names I can still remember who were members of it.
All of them were based in the Sapphire server.

I absolutely LOVED this game when I was 10 and 11 years old! 😀
I played this game a lot in 2007, 2008 and in 2009. The game was a little bit different back then, namely:
    1. Full-browser game. No executable and not even an Adobe Flash Player version, but solely an Adobe Shockwave Player version.
    2. No accounts. This wasn't introduced, yet. All progress was stored on your computer, probably in the cache of Adobe Shockwave Player.
    3. Minimalistic design. No bells and whistles. No pets. No extra slots that you could pay for. No elaborate quest story about beating the dragon Bane. The only quest were the quests given by a lady about the Dungeon.
    4. You could choose between four characters (boy, girl, knight and skeleton) instead of six.
    5. You couldn't choose the hair, couldn't choose the colour of skin. Only the helmet for the knight could be chosen.
    6. Instead of all monsters' strength being relative to your strength, this was only the case in the first world where you spawned (/teleport 1). In /teleport 2, 3, 4 and 5, the monster's strength was set to a specific level. If a novice came to /teleport 5, he couldn't beat any monster. If a level 100 player would go to /teleport 2, he could kill all monsters with one hit.
    7. No power moves, no bow and arrow.
    8. No ship that went around the island.
    9. No diamonds, no smith, no rune bag, no crafting weapons using rune stones, no gifts etcetera.
    10. No ability to put other players on the ignore list. If someone was an annoyance, you had to endure it.
    11. You could have an unlimited amount of health potions and using one took effect immediately (without the move of bringing your arm upwards, first). You could use health potions anywhere, except in /teleport 1
There were also other differences, like:
    1. Huge player base. You had players all around the world: Dutch, French, Poles, Spanish people etcetera. Whatever your ethnicity, you would always find countrymen in the game. There were three servers (Emareld, Sapphire and another one) and you could rarely join chatroom 1 (/join 1) because it was almost always full. Same for chatroom 2 and sometimes, chatroom 3 was full, too.
Now, you find at most a few people in chatroom 1 of the world you spawn in.
    2. The game was in very active development. I witnessed the time when they introduced the rune bag, rune stones and the ability to craft weapons, when they introduced accounts, when they introduced the ability to add other users to your friend list, when they introduced the ability to put other players on the ignore list, when they introduced new worlds (like the /teleport 6 arena, or the /teleport 7 stone circle and the /teleport 8 chessboard battle), when the extra characters were introduced, when the pet came into the game, when you could gift other players weapons, when they set a limit on the amount of health potions you could have, when they introduced the Adobe Flash Player version of the game, when the power moves were introduced, when the ship and bow and arrow came into play, when new monsters (such as the werewolf) were introduced, when the diamond was introduced etcetera.
I witnessed the growth of the game - and I welcomed most of these changes. I liked the introduction of the arena of /teleport 6. I do think that the stone circle of /teleport 7 and especially the chess board battle of /teleport 8 were redundant, but I didn't complain. I especially welcomed the introduction of accounts, meaning that I could bring my progress with me to another computer, instead of having to start all over again if I did. The extra characters were nice and I also liked the gifts. The rune bag gave a little bit of extra to the game. The diamonds were a bit redundant for me, but still a nice touch to the game.
But there were three changes that I (strongly) disliked:
---> Graphical overhaul that made the game a lot uglier than it was. A second graphical overhaul later on made the game look a little bit better again, but it never became as beautiful as it once was.
---> They put a limit to the number of health potions, setting it to 10. I had over 600, but I couldn't get any additional health potion. I then just used up all my health potions until I had 10. 😞
----> They made all monsters in the game relatively as strong as you (the player).
Especially the last thing killed my fun with Sherwood Dungeon. Suddenly, there was no point in progressing any more. When first, you could set yourself a goal, like: "I want to become strong enough to defeat a dragon in /teleport 3", followed by "Now I want to defeat one in /teleport 4" and finally in /teleport 5. If you wanted to become strong enough to defeat /teleport 2 monsters with one hit without using any weapon, you suddenly couldn't do any of this any more, because every single monster in the game had strength relative to yours, always. So, no matter if you just started from level 1 or if you were a Sherwood Dungeon veteran with a level over 60: it didn't matter any more. The whole idea of making progress was lost.
This was when I stopped playing the game for good.
I did come back a few times after this for a nostalgia trip, playing it very occasionally (maybe thrice a year), but I didn't play it regularly any more. The fun was gone.
    3. Back then, Sherwood Dungeon was only one of the games of Maid Marian that you could play. You could also play Moon base, Club Marian and a game where you could only play a girl. These games were very simple in comparison with Sherwood Dungeon, being even more minimalistic, but they were there - and they were fun to play. Despite Sherwood Dungeon being the game Maid Marian worked the most at, you still had alternatives. Right now, Sherwood Dungeon is the only game Maid Marian offers. You go to their website and Sherwood Dungeon is the only thing you can find.
So all in all, wonderful game, wonderful experience, wonderful memories, but a shame that they removed the monsters having their own levels of strength per teleport dimension. Without that thing, I would still be playing the game.
I also mourn for the decease of Adobe Shockwave Player and Adobe Flash Player. So many old and nostalgic Internet games are now unplayable because you cannot install those programs any more. And if you can, it's a real hassle to get them to work again, since both programs + all modern web browsers are specifically set to disable them from working any more. I wished both Shockwave and Flash were still up.

Man this game was fun. I watched it decline from 5000 to 500 players. It was hard to watch, friends quit, friends of those friends quit, people got busy and had no time to play. It was like a big community of people that just had no time for the game anymore.

It was perfect for a poor kid like me who didn’t have to pay or a decent PC. Think I’m going to make a retrospective video going through it from the early era. I played this before there was a dungeon lol. Back in the earliest days the map was just a big empty swamp, and there were a few temples scattered around the outer edges of the map. Essentially the game was just a chatroom but you could fight a few spiders and anyone else logged into the game. There was no inventory or anything, literally you just controlled your knight with wasd keys and you could attack using either the alt or ctrl keys. Back then we would come up with unique "combo's" that would really just be pressing either or both attack keys a certain number of times as quickly as possible before the attack animations could finish, resulting in damage being calculated on whatever you were attacking multiple times. It was simple but it had a very active community of players that would log in every day to participate in clan wars lol. Good times.
