- If something you grew up with still holds up, by all means, don’t abandon it. But I’m a firm believer in recognising and addressing kinks in such things and regarding things the way they are instead of how I remember them. Story structure means a lot to me, I strive to consider appeal from several angles, including but not limited to that of an average railfan, and I have been asked by viewers on many occasions what to my mind works and doesn’t work with various aspects of Seasons 1 to 5 of Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends.

My suggestion for a female replacing name for Toby is Tabitha, but I can still imagine Toby being a nickname for her. Also, I would like to see Duck next in the my ideal series.

I also did not know about the 'skirts' thing either, although surely you could get away with calling it a kilt?
Jokes aside, I'd have loved to have seen Toby in the show use his book livery.
The idea of the tram covers being referred to as aprons also gives the vibes of Toby being either a baker or a blacksmith. And ngl, I kinda like that.

I prefer Toby as a male character but interesting idea.

I prefer Percy as a female character (but still have her be named Percy and have her look and sound identical to her male counterpart in every single way) since Percy is a uni gender name that is short for both Perceval and Persephone and Percy also has a uni gender look so it totally could have worked.

Much like how Thomas wouldn't suddenly have become a girl if Topham added skirts to him, (though that would be strange) I imagine it's the same for Toby. Especially since the J70s did run without them on certain occasions.
Pretty curious to see how differently your take on Duck and Oliver is. But as for name suggestions for your AU Toby, might I suggest maybe Willow?
This may be a stretch but I would personally like to see your ideal versions of Hit era/Season 7 characters like Arthur and Molly for examples.

Seeing your versions of the engines has got me thinking
what's the logic behind the face being based on a color from the liveries?
i know some engines have their faces be based off the main color in their livery (ex : thomas with a blue face, henry with a green face and james with a red face)
but some engines have their faces based on a certain color in their livery (ex: diesel with a red face and donald with an orange color)
my question is, how would repainting them work in your universe?
example : Edward is a FR K2, so this obviously means he came from the furness railway and this obviously means he had worn the FR red livery before he came to sodor
as seen in your "ideal edward and james" video, edward had a blue livery and has a blue face
so how would a repaint work in your universe?
do they have to repaint their faces to be the same color as their livery, or does the faces change color themselves after the repaint?
i would love to hear your explanation on the subject!
Interesting idea on making Toby female and naming her after the luggage van on Wilbert's layout. I also find it interesting that side plates were referred to as skirts.

To be fair, the name "Toby"/"Tobias" is listed as a Gender-Neutral name, so I can see the tram keeping the name.
Some skirts are called kilts in Scotland (my ideal Toby's actually somewhat Scottish)
I can understand if folks have this idea of having female J70 and Y6's with the skirt making it not common for a male as in my non thomas AU I have a female one myself named "Kathy"
But I would also have male tram locomotives too where their sideplates would be called "Kilts" among the locomotives themselves
In my AU, Toby’s cowcatchers and side-plate more resemble a kelt, so he is still male, I just like, the idea of Henrietta and Toby being an old married couple better

Respectfully, I think Toby should remain a male character, it’s just kinda odd and almost impossible to picture Toby as a female especially when you’ve looked at his RWS stories and his TVS episodes from seasons 1-5
What about seasons 6 and 7? Those are classic as well and Toby is in character in those two seasons.

Also, You've probably got this question alot but, is there an in lore reason for why the engines have coloured faces that match their paint work?

I love how you pointed out something that has flown over my head for years despite being a massive RWS fan and I will never _ever_ unsee it now.
Another thing I find amusing is how there's a common joke about trans people and trams due to accidental misspellings, so considering Toby is a tram engine make of that what you will.
Overall I think this is by far the most unique headcannon for them and I actually like it quite a bit, also considering Toby is a pretty gender neutral name you could keep it however props for considering a different one too.
My guess is ducks next, but I would love to see some other engines such as spencer or Murdoch

I’m sure men skirts exist, so Toby doesn’t technically have to be female. I know this is your AU, but changing Toby’s gender doesn’t seem that mandatory to me.
