CJF has done far more for PSU Football than he is given credit for. From the sanctions, to Covid to facilities he has made PSU Football relevant again. He has a losing record against OSU and UM but he has never been favored in those games. Plus, he has won 3 NY6 bowls.

"...but he has never been favored in those games" Is that supposed to be a compliment to him? Maybe they aren't favored in those games because he can never beat them? Georgia was rarely favored in big games before Kirby Smart, but then he comes along and all of a sudden they were. Funny how a head coach actually makes a difference in their favorability. The man collects a 7 figure salary. If he's not responsible to change the odds, then who is?

@@jmbuff1 It was more than just changing head coaches that made the difference at Georgia. They also have stacked together a string of #1 or #2 ranked recruiting classes in a row. That isn't because Kirby Smart is a better recruiter than James Franklin. Smart coming to Georgia after being a Saban assistant certainly gave him a better shot at blue chip prospects than most first time head coaches. But it also helps that Georgia is loaded with talented high school players and is in a region with an abundance of 4- and 5-star players. For some reason, the number of top players available in PA has dwindled over the past 40 years, to the point that PSU had to have a great year recruiting to even crack the top 10 before the recent changes to transfers and NIL. NOW we are going to struggle to stay in the top 15 as we lose recruits that we would normally get to schools like Missouri, that are spending big to lure players.

@@jmbuff1Jon Palmer stated it perfectly, Georgia has the hottest recruiting area right in it's back yard, it's extremely hard for PSU to land 5 star talent because it just isn't in the region like it used to be. Kirby Smart took the Nick Saban formula to Georgia and turned that program into what they should've been for decades.

@@jackstraw6880 Ok fair enough on the starting conditions, but let's be real it's been 10 years now. That's more than double the average coaching tenure in college football. How many years will be too many? 20? Maybe the difference is expectations.
I'll tell you the reason PSU fans like myself are unhappy and have higher expectations is because we've already been to the top of the hill. I'm old enough to remember those years, and it's very hard to be a legit contender every few years over several decades, to now just saying well it is what it is, we just have to accept our place. Even in the "down years" we were a threat to higher competition, and not rarely picking them off. There were so many huge wins, even when they weren't going undefeated. Now there are simply none. Maybe it will never be that good again, but I just can't settle. Maybe others can, in which case, to each his own.

@Zach, the way you closed out the show with the whole "some people are playing by the rules and its limiting PSU" was a huge misstep, IMHO. Most are playing by the rules its just that they are using the rules tobtheir absolute maximum. This entire podcast was great and laid out clearly the issues CJF and Kraft are facing and then you close out the show letting the fans and donors off the hook.

It is a false narrative to say that people who love Joe Paterno and want to see him given his proper recognition for his record-breaking career and what he meant to PSU and Central PA, are against Franklin, or dislike him. It doesn't mean that they don't want to support the school. Those people paying a fortune for season tickets--and all the extra money they have to pay for the ability to get them--are certainly supporting the school. Joe has only been gone for 12 years. Which means that the majority of people buying tickets to watch PSU (excluding students) ARE people that watched Paterno coached teams and are fully aware of what he meant to PSU. That also means that PSU's pool of potential donors includes people who are upset at the university leaders for not correcting their errors from 2011 and 2012, and simply won't donate until they do. I would assume that among that group, there would be some people who could give a lot of money if they wanted to. But they see that leadership can't even do the most basic first step of naming the field in his honor. Which would only take some stencils and paint for the grass, and a pregame or halftime ceremony. Then it would be done. The people who don't like it will bitch about it for a minute before they move on to the next outrage du jour. Oh, well.
I am one of those people who loved, and respected Joe Paterno and what he built. I was certainly proud of PSU football for Success With Honor being more than just a slogan under JVP. That doesn't mean that I want PSU to unilaterally surrender to a fate of mediocrity because we know that Joe would be sickened by what NIL and transfer portal abuse have done to the game. (He WAS for having the NCAA change the rules, so the SCHOOLS could give more benefits to the athletes, but with uniform rules.)
James Franklin has to operate the program within the system that exists NOW. Sometimes that means the way things are done, or the way we think, has to change. I'd put the names back on the jerseys, and the logo on the helmets. I'd have more alternate uniforms. We can still have success with honor under an NIL system, because it is NOT dishonorable if it is within the rules. There can still be honor in how our players are taught to handle themselves, and what kind of things they do with their money. I've seen where players--not just at PSU--are setting up charitable organizations of their own or contributing money and time to existing ones.

@@TimM-wk1zx Except the dig at Franklin, you are right. But the way it is being handled is the problem. The NCAA went from strong-arming PSU with unwarranted sanctions, to being so worried about getting sued that they are impotent when it comes to enforcing the actual rules. There is almost nothing stopping a school from offering a player to transfer mid-season. NIL was meant to give players some extra cash--not to allow them to become unrestricted free agents to schools with NO salary cap to limit how much NIL money they use to lure transfers.

Not ALL kids have free rides….Here is an example of an NIL DEAL that was just floated. Starocci was apparently just offered 400k to wrestle JUST next year postseason….And clearly someone thinks it is worth it. I’m certain Carter will be back, but I also believe he is debating the offer.

    1) College football is badly broken. That's not James Franklin's fault. 2) Fans were misled about who was participating in the Peach Bowl. That was James Franklin's fault. Pro Tip: Figure out a way to not tank major bowl games. The Peach Bowl was an embarassment. Contribute to NIL? Nah, I'll pass. If the players don't care about the Peach Bowl, why should I?

When the Peach Bowl is part of the CFP, they will care. I don't like the opt outs in bowls either. But I can certainly understand why top-rated players would, with the money that is on the line if someone gets seriously injured right before they become draft eligible (like Jake Butt for one). For those of us who have been around a long time, it will be hard to look at non-CFP bowl games differently than in the past. A school's win-loss record in bowls is going to become unimportant, as they become more of a showcase of players that will be returning, along with the seniors who aren't risking $$$$$ if they get hurt.

@@TimM-wk1zx If it was just a matter of there not being enough "quality wins" (which apparently means winning games where PSU was the Vegas underdog) over opponents with more talented rosters (players 1-85) these big money holdouts would just donate more so that we can keep up with the Jonses (OSU, scUM, Oregon, USC and the top SEC schools).
There are some wealthy alumni who aren't donating because it doesn't feel right because they were conditioned to look down at the idea of buying success instead of earning it "with honor." There ARE ALSO people who used to donate who have said that they won't because of how PSU did JoePa dirty--and haven't done anything to make it right.
