Yeah, I'm old and hadn't pre-ordered since the 90s. But, I cut myself some slack due to the pandemic and thought, Well these are the guys who made Witcher3, no way this game's bad, so I preordered CB2077. lol... So, I'll just wait to see how the final Diablo release goes before ordering.
This is not a new concept. I've followed some gaming TH-camrs who have been saying this for years. Now, that GameSpot says it, it is news! I've haven't pre-ordered a game since GTA 4.
@@anthonyaponte4391 I think it's relevant at any time to bring this up. I personally never pre-ordered something but i'm happy that this is getting more mainstream.
I'll take it a step further. Stop buying games at launch. Embrace patient gaming and wait a minimum of 6 months to a year or 2 before buying a game. You save money, get reviews from regular players online and you get to completely sidestep the hype. It's a win-win all the way around.
YES!! This! Thank you! This is the smart approach. Another benefit: don't be a guinea pig. They can iron out the wrinkles with dozens of patches, updates, and hotfixes and use some other poor saps as free beta testers. I want a finished product. All they do now is rush out half baked, unfinished games, and the preorder buyers pay the price. Those who are patient get a better product.
The review copies and "gaming journalists" don't help either. Didn't hear anything negative about Jedi Survivor til the game had been out for a minute and after it got great reviews, which encouraged MORE preorders. Also, if SF6 is having controversy this is also the first I'm hearing of it, once again AFTER the games released and gotten greta reviews
When I managed a gaming store back in the late 80s-mid-90s, we were told to push pre-orders as a way to get customer's money before the games came out. It was just a way to get the money early so as not to allow customers to spend their money elsewhere and not have the cash by the time the game was released. It also did assure we got enough copies (because the company as a whole got a number of copies and those were distributed to the stores based upon their pre-order numbers) but we almost always got extra copies over and above the pre-order numbers.
yep I remember going to buy a few games and not pre ordering them back in the day and the day after launch and the week after there was no guaranty that there was a copy of the game any version for sale. so if you wanted to have Game X in the first month better pre order (and the store would keep your copy for up to a week if not longer (expectantly if you called and told them why you might be late). heck for some games I been told can´t pre order it we are out in this store (call going around from the store to the other in the city to see if anyone had any reserved copies)
I've stopped pre-ordering games years ago. I mean this is a no brainer. How many games have come out unfinished, broken or didn't live up to expectations? The community never learns though. They continue to pre-order or buy things day one only to complain and review bomb the developers when things don't go your way. Just stop buying games day one and it will save you a lot of pain and aggravation.
This is a fun show. I feel like there used to be more shows like this on TH-cam and they’re all gone now. Keep these coming. Thanks for the content guys!
In the last decade of gaming, devs have become complacent with releasing un-finished AA games under the banner of a polished AAA title. CP2077 was the last title I pre-ordered and the last time I burned my hand on that handle.
Probably a group of managers that want it out fast to please the investors. A lot of devs probably want to finish it first, as its their work and reputation on display.
@@virtual-adam I fully agree. I misplaced the blame here. It is 100% greedy CEOs of these mega corps that are pushing this. I actually feel bad for the devs from studios I like because they’re looking at this negative feedback and wish they could’ve done more. Money is king. Which is why if you want game developers to start producing AAA quality games again, you must persuade them with your wallet.
I wait for reviews 99% of the time. Sadly, Cyberstunk was an exception due to the industry shattering hype. CD Projekt RED took advantage of its loyal fanbase and reputation. What the company did is unforgivable.
@@HULK-HOGAN1 . . . until gamers forgave CDPR, just like someone in a dysfunctional, abusive relationship. And gamers wonder why games still launch broken, unfinished, and incomplete, while being charged full MSRP.
@@listofromantics I ended up playing Cyberpunk once the 1.6 update came out (I never would have played it if I hadn't have bought it at launch). Very fun game now, but what CDPR did should be neither forgiven or forgotten.
@@johnhowetv No they didn't. We didn't have TH-cam. We didn't have content creators. Social Media didn't exist in 2001 when they wanted us to preorder GameCubes and PlayStation 2 games. We had Game Informer and Nintendo Power.
Capcom has used Denuvo in all its recent PC releases. Saying SF6 getting it is unexpected is wearing blinders. If the price of cosmetic MTX at the last moment is enough to put someone off a game, they weren't as invested as they thought and shouldn't have pre-ordered in the first place. Don't pre-order if you think this type of stuff could be a non-starter for you. Simple.
I’ve been gaming for 25 years. Pre-ordering was shunned by conscientious gamers back in 2014 after EA/Dice’s broken BF4 and Ubisoft’s downgraded Watchdogs. The fact pre-ordering is still a thing is a really bad look for the collective image of the gaming community. One contributing factor is young kids who are being taken advantage of since they’re simply unaware of how scandalous and manipulative developers and publishers can be. Either that or the lowest of the low: dysfunctional ‘adults’ who pre-order for cosmetics. I haven’t pre-ordered since 2014 and I have never bought a micro-transaction. I research every game before I give my hard earned cash to a company. I remember the names of developers and publishers who have lied and use that knowledge to inform the likelihood of purchasing. People need to calm down. Wait 1 week post-launch. Watch reviews from credible TH-camrs you trust. Then commit your hard earned money.
Exactly. And there is so much stuff out there to play anyway. You can never truly catch up. No game is worth $70 imo but eventually every game reaches its correct price
The last game I pre-ordered was no man's sky. Vowed to never preorder a game again after that one. Too many companies releasing games unfinished or broken and then you have to hope they fix it before the community gives up on the game and the company just decides to shut down servers.
Pre-order is often mandatory if you want to get special edition of games (including steelbooks) or smaller physical titles. For example, the physical edition of Vertigo, MegaMan or Metroid Remaster was only available at GameStop here in Canada for those who pre-ordered at least for the first few weeks after release. Also I don't have to pay a single $ until I pick-up my games in store...
Yeah but we’re saying don’t because you’re giving a company money before they’ve even been obligated to produce a complete product. You may like those games and want them early (I suggest buying digital copies to subvert this) and I’m not hating you for that - I just implore you to consider the impact it has on the gaming industry giving publishers money before they’ve released a game
I agree, limited editions/collector editions are my exceptions to preordering certain games but I’ve never had any issues with the games i preordered, my taste in games prevent me from getting burned.
Preorder use to be about receiving limited edition physical product, however thats disappearing in favor (developers specifically) of digital content, which (to me atleast) is pointless. This also happens because most new gamers want the attention of potential followers to show a game that they are missing out on or to have their hands in potential partner ship and profit.
Definitely an important discussion. I finally learned my leasson with Jedi: Survivor. You just can't trust publishers or devs (to some extent) to have a finished or polished experience at launch anymore. I know its an over used idiom but we all really need to "vote with our wallets" for things to change.
I learned after Cyberpunk, yet with Jedi Survivor I was a micro second from doing it again, to the point I was typing in my password to confirm my purchase, then took a breath, and changed my mind almost instinctively. Shortly after I started hearing things and was relieved. Definitely keeping my guns holstered in the future.
@Dezzyyx its interesting you say that as I also had a bad feeling after they announced it was running on unreal 4 that it might have performance issues. But I foolishly let the hype get the better of me.
Diablo 4 comes with preorder bonuses. The reviews are already out. Game is out in a few days for standard edition. What’s gonna change in 3 days that makes buying it now a bad thing?
Diablo IV cosmetics are kind of a 'non-issue', since 1) they don't do anything, 2) They did tell us it was coming to the game prior to the release and 3) If you're silly enough to spend $28 extra on your $70 purchase just to 'look different' in an isometric game where you can barely even see your character when you're actually playing (and where some classes frequently transform - negating the whole point of the cosmetic in the first place) ... that's on you, kiddo.
I did for PC jedi survivor after promising myself that I would never do again after cyberpunk...yeah, it went as well as you expected, I'm holding myself for FFXVI this time
For years now I've used what I call "The Magneto Strategy" when it comes to games/technology/etc. In the 3rd XMen movie when Magneto and his mutants attack Alcatraz Juggernaut walks towards the battle, and Magneto stops him quipping "In Chess the pawns go first." Then the humans bring out their plastic weapons, impervious to Magneto's control of metal that he has relied on to defend against "Humans and their guns." and a bunch of the no name mutants get hit by these plastic weapons. The scene then switches back to Magneto who now quips "That's why the pawns go first." The pawns in my case are early adopters.
Here’s a more interesting question: What is the difference between pre-ordering a game and purchasing a game the day it comes out because you’re excited to play it? I personally follow developers and reviewers pretty closely and I honestly cannot remember the last time I bought a “bad game.” I watch and listen to reviews and previews from a wide variety of content creators long before I purchase a game. But if my confidence in a release is high enough, I will buy the game Day 1. I remember pre-ordering Read Dead Redemption 2, playing it for 90 hours, and being so disappointed in the terrible storytelling/ mission design, that I returned it a few weeks after launch. It had nothing to do with RDR2 being a bad game because it certainly isn’t. I just don’t like aspects of the game which are subjective to my personal taste. Yes sometimes developers sneak in things like MTX, but cosmetic MTX in particular do not bother me whatsoever. They’re purely optional and almost always attainable by just playing the game. I’m more so curious about the demographic who mindlessly pre-orders games and yet still watched videos like this. I don’t think there is a lot of cross over there. 😂
Unrelated to the video content but Lucy trying to integrate her 'Let's talk about it' phrase into the opening is brilliant XD Keep up the great work guys!
Yep, they don't get my money until i see reviews on bugs and performance. If it comes out broken, i wait and buy it when it's fixed. As a bonus that usually means that i can pick it up for a discounted price. A perfect example of this is Cyberpunk. I bought that when the "next gen" update finally released. I paid half the price compared to launch AND i got to play a game that looked and ran great. This is how i approach EVERY game now.
CDRP overhyped / overpromised (then grossly under delivered) on Cyberpunk 2077 and pre-sold 13+ million copies of the game at launch, knowing full well the game wasn't anywhere close to ready or what was promised after nearly a decade of hype (and lies). Video games are a victim of their own success and consumers, who are largely apathetic apologists, are largely to blame for it. There is NO lasting consequence or negatives for shady devs and publisher to overhype pre-sales for games that continually launch unfinished, buggy, and or broken. None. Edit: P.S. Love the series with Lucy and Tam! Keep it up!
Planet Coaster was the game that stopped me from ever pre-ordering ever again. As no-where was it ever said it would be available on GamePass from day 1.
I'm really enjoying this new show! I don't preorder anymore, but probably did a lifetime's worth all in one go when I dropped £1337 (around $2000) on the Kickstarter for Elite Dangerous! I played the original as a kid, and went on to a space research career as a result, ending with 5 years hunting black holes for NASA using my own invention! I meant that pledge as a thank you, rather than worrying too much about what the new game would be like. Also, I got to go to E3 2014 as a community ambassador, which was great, even though E3 was already winding down by then. That was probably worth $2k in itself!
Way to finally join the conversation that's been happening for the last 5 years. No one should preorder anything. It incentivizes developers and publishers to release unfinished games and turns gamers into QA testers who are paying for the privilege. Pre-ordering the game guarantees a sale for the pubs/devs but nothing for the consumer except the promise of a game with absolutely no guarantee of quality or content. Devs/pubs need to prove they have a game worth buying BEFORE players buy it....its the only way to hold companies accountable. Pre-ordering games was only a necessary thing when physical game media was a thing that might sell out. That's an issue so now there are preorder bonuses that, frankly, should just be part of the game as opposed to something extra for pre-ordering. Ask yourselves, is some pre-order skin worth playing a broken game for an extended period of time when many game have such a short shelf life of support? (lookin at you CoD)
This is a good point in principle, but I think the focus on Diablo IV was a bad example because it released extremely well optimized and feature complete. They can charge as much as they want for cosmetics in the cash shop because I don't need any of that stuff. But by pre-ordering the deluxe edition I got at least 40 extra hours of game time, which is a pretty good value at 50¢ an hour for the extra $20. I wish everyone started at the same time just for overall good will, but it was definitely not a rip off and I have no regrets. Btw, you can usually return a pre-ordered game after a beta, so they are actually a great way to get plenty of time to try out a game without risk.
Pre-orders made sense in a world where there was a risk that the physical copy of the game would run out at launch. There days there isn’t really a point to preorder because you just download a link anyway
With so many games launching with multiple performance issues and bugs, you are better off waiting for patches to iron out the issues first. If you buy a game on day 1 that unsurprisingly has issues, and a week later a patch rolls out that significaly fixes issues, welp by that time you have already beat the game. You basically played a game in a poor state, whereas people who waited are experiencing the game the way it was intended to perform and look. There is no rush to buy games. Wait, watch reviews, then make a decision. Do not preorder a game before a review. Great video guys! Cheers!
I think it took maybe 2-3 years of my life for me to entirely write off pre-orderering, Kickstartering, or Early Accessing games. And this was over a decade ago. It's an almost universally bad decision. I am baffled there are people still engaging with publishers on the publisher's terms with this stuff. Especially with AAA companies. We used to have demos so you could make an informed decision. Now we have uninformed enticement to throw money at a game with often nothing more than a trailer. People need to stop getting suckered in by (generally) extremely minor pre-order bonuses. Plus, any company actually selling a part of a game as exclusive pre-order bonus is already, in my opinion, doing something ethically problematic. Imagine walking into the Louvre and the Mona Lisa being in black and white because you didn't pay for your entry 2 weeks in advance. And also that you didn't know the Mona Lisa was going to be there. Or that any of the paintings were good. Just that there were paintings of vaguely that form. And maybe there are big holes in the floor. Now, I will occasionally do 2 of the aforementioned things, but I really have to have genuine certainty the studio is going to deliver. I will EA any Klei game. I will pre-order any FromSoft game. I think I might be completely burnt on the idea of Kickstarting a video game (or board game). But outside of very specific studios whom I trust implicitly to deliver, I'm not touching unfinished games.
I’ve preordered in the past to get collector’s editions that seemed like they’d be hard to find later. I love my Halo 3 Master Chief helmet and my Halo Reach statue display. Nowadays those types of bonuses seem less common, and add to that digital downloads, I don’t really preorder anymore. Also, it’s great to finally watch you guys on video after listening to you on GameSpot After Dark! Lucy you are gorgeous! Thanks for the great content, you have a new loyal viewer 😁👍
Halo 5 Guardians was the last game I ever pre-ordered. I was always a fan of getting the collectible item back in the day. Got the Arkham statues as well.
I agree with Tamoor for sure. Pre-ordering games felt more necessary and impactful a few generations ago when WHERE you pre-ordered made more the difference and there was a chance you may not get a specific game day 1 due to demand. In the digital age where we are seeing physical game sales less and less it feels like pre-ordering is pointless unless you want specific things from the pre-order. I rarely pre-order games nowadays. I will say that I did pre-order the deluxe edition of SFVI. Its a game I know I will sink hours into and follow for years so for me its a no brainer. That denovo stuff is kinda strange considering the controversy but Im hoping it still turns out okay.
Great video!! Very refreshing to see these kinds of topics discussion in a thoughtful and measured manor. Love y'all on GB podcast. Keep up the awesome work!
Witcher 3 gave actual additional physical goods for pre-ordering. Never regretted that. Otherwise, no reason to pre-order. I actually like how CA does it. They have a bonus discount of 10% that applies until one week after launch. So people who pre-order get a 10% discount, and people who would like to wait and see still get a 10% discount if they buy within a week.
I only ever pre-ordered physical Collector’s Editions. And after Fallout 76, I stopped buying any games until after there were reviews of the release day version.
If I pre-order anything, and it's very rare that I do, it's because of expected limited quantities. The last thing I pre-ordered was the Steam Deck because I wanted to get my hands on one as soon as I could. The last game I pre-ordered was Super Smash Bros. for WiiU, but that's because I wanted the GameCube controller and adapter bundle, which was slated to be limited in quantity at launch.
There used to be some incentive to pre-order. Like when they actually gave you stuff, ex the Halo 2 metal case or Halo 3 Masterchief Helmet. The dark souls posters were cool as well. But nowadays with digital direct downloads and even hard copies giving you nothing there is no point. (Btw I'm old now so secretly I do miss midnight releases and shiny game cases lol)
The last game I pre-ordered was Halo 2 and that was because I probably wouldn’t have been able to get it for a while after it came out. Wouldn’t ever do it now unless I really wanted some kind of physical special edition
Early access periods have started to overcome the traditional launch window involving pre-orders. I don't really see too much focus on pre-ordering anymore.
I agree. But I only pre order games I 100% know I’m gonna play. My favorite type of games. No matter how they are on release. Usually the games I like are perfect on release anyway. (GTA, RDR etc) my point is: if it’s your favorite kind of game and you KNOW you are gonna play it and you cannot live without it, then I don’t see any problem in pre -ordering games .
I know most of your audience is from the US, but there's the issue that some games prices actually increase between announcement and release in other countries due to inflation or the US$ getting more expensive. Prices can suddenly and drastically be "adjusted", sometimes with mind numbingly 100% price increases in countries with weaker currency. So there's that too.
I've been hearing so many content creators echo this over the last few months. Hoping this reaches critical mass to the point game companies understand they can't release broken games anymore. Last game I ever pre-ordered was Max Payne 3. Wait for the reviews and play one of the 1000's of other good games in the meantime.
I preorder physical special editions for games I think I’ll be interested in because they may be hard to get on or after release. I always have the option to simply return it for a refund if the embargo day reviews turn out to be bad.
I feel like the numbers on those physical collector editions are also down. It used to be you could walk into a store and they could get you one for sure. But nowadays, the moment they are made "available" online they all vanish :(
I’m actually usually FOR preordering. Only because I HAVE to because otherwise there are cosmetics in some game that can ONLY be attained via preorder. Sadly games like MK11 or even Ubisoft games which have final “Ultimate” or GOTY editions which SHOULD have all dlc and preorder outfits/weapons/gear hold some of them back because you didn’t preorder them or even the DLC before they launched!
I can understand people who pre-order a game to get something that other players won't. It's a smart tactic from game studios to have some cosmetic item or a side quest that requires pre-ordering. I don't like it and I won't pre-order it, but I get why people fall for it and as long as people do it will continue happening. I would suggest to anyone who feels the need to get that bonus that they should wait as long as possible to pre-order, not only to save your money but something could happen to the game or some information could come out that makes you change your mind about the game.
I’ve always pre ordered games. Physical games though. There is no harm. If you’re pre ordering a collectors edition, it’s likely to sell out unless you pre order it and also in general pre orders are never charged until a couple days before release. I will always pre order.
I've only ever pre-ordered one game and it was Cyberpunk. I did it because I'm a massive fan of the genre and it was the first truly cyberpunk AAA game ever made. I didn't regret that purchase but I would not pre-order another game and since CDPR still dropped the ball at launch it's a lesson to always be wary of pre-orders. And despite some of these offers being cosmetic, like in the case of Diablo 4. It's still incentivizes bad practices that are anti-consumer. Put the cosmetics in the game like they're supposed to be. The resources being used to work on those cosmetics form part of the final costing for the game so from an accounting perspective it's in the final price of the game. After launch then they can add whatever they want .
I pre-order 1-2 games knowing that 300% I will play this game. Yeah wishlist works just for getting to know games are good or not. 2021-2023 is the perfect example in gaming industry. So I buy 3-4 games in total per year which makes me happy about it 😊
I only pre-order in the UK because of the online deals. I'd still cancel if the reviews are consistently bad or if I don't think I'm gonna play it immediately. Games get marked up pretty high on the day of release so I'd have to pay those inflated prices if I want to play on day one.
I wish you went into more detail around collectors editions. Those items have a dramatically wide scale of “value” that hasn’t been worth while for most games in a decade
TotalBiscuit uploaded a video 10 years ago called: "Should you preorder videogames?" talking about this. To think we have still not learned not to preorder.
I'm not big on pre-ordering, and I tend to not do it, but the refund policy on Steam is so easy that I can just refund it if it ends up being not what I bargained for. So if there's a pre-order bonus, which is a practice I'm not a fan of, I can still get it risk-free.
Been preordering games for 30 years, while always being very careful what I pick. I regretted my choice a couple times and cancelled preorders twice. I know I can trust my instincts on this one, partly because I don't buy any multiplayer game. Not my thing! Except Mortal Kombat. Not going to stop. The boutique I preorder from now is pretty small. If I don't, I can't get the game on day 1 and go to Walmart (last resort).
If game journalists from GameSpot truthfully wanted people to stop preordering games they wouldn’t write articles about where to preorder each edition and what the digital bonuses are.
I can admit I still preorder sometimes but the biggest reason that I do is “at that current time I have the money to do so” so I get it then rather wait for life to happen then my check engine light comes on😂
You really do have to look into the game and what you actually get with the pre-order and is it worth compared to buying the game on/after release with a dlc pack etc, not to mention buying for a remastered or a remake what's different from the original and if you still have the original and can play it as well. Also where you are buying it from and if they promise to lower the price if it goes down before release and transfer the savings on to you. I do wait nearer the time that the game comes out as I don't want to loose track of my outgoings as I do live on a budget. I do still pre-order but it's a rare thing and it's only game franchises i'm really into and my last one was a bit of a let down being the latest Horizon game where you get this massive mamoth statue which looks great and they couldn't be bothered to give you a game disc yet the cheaper bundles give you a disc, this wouldn't have been an issue since it did state that there was no disc but my connection was like 20 meg at the time.
On the flip side. As companies trying to incentivize people to preorder. They should allow those who preorder games earlier even with standard edition to come into the game’s launch earlier. So we won’t have a situation like most live service/ mmo games or like diablo4 today where servers crash and we all can’t log in. This will give people a reason and incentive to preorder early. Maybe those preorder earlier come in first. People won’t like it. But preorders will at least have a purpose.
The problem isn’t pre-ordering games, it’s so many just buy any game they see without investing in actual quality games! People that preorder the latest shooter or hyped game of the month are of course going to get burned over and over…it’s just like the days of Atari with quantity over quality. I myself know what I’m getting with Assassin’s Creed, Jedi Survivor, God of War, Horizon, and Dragon Age with every entry and deserve my preorder…everything else I will either wait on or *gasp* not play! Save your $$, save your sanity…
My biggest issue with preordering is companies giving "early access" if you preorder the deluxe editions. They are essentially saying if you don't pay the extra cash your not getting for a week. There's no such thing as early access. Just punishing those who don't buy the more costly version of the game. Plus early access gets in before reviews another reason they do it. So just like with points in this video state you get burned. Not only that you been burned paying £100 for the privilege
This kind of topic is why I like the release of God Eater 3, it had no dlc, no enhanced version and was a complete game, they had updates that added content lots and lots of content. This game released 3 years ago, now that is a rare indeed.
Cyberpunk was the final straw for me. Never again.
Loving this series too.

Huh, you know gauging numbers in order to get physical copies does make sense.
Not so much with our digital downloads now x]
Always buy a year or more after launch, 50% of, patched up, all dlcs, happy days.

its because algorithm culture doesn't encourage nuance
100% agree. The game will still be there when reviews are out. Heck most of them are digital. Just wait for full reviews.
Full reviews are out several days before the games come out and you can always cancel pre-orders.
That's why the publishers approach it from the angle of "get this extra level" or whatever from a pre-order which is soooooo annoying

@@listofromantics I ended up playing Cyberpunk once the 1.6 update came out (I never would have played it if I hadn't have bought it at launch). Very fun game now, but what CDPR did should be neither forgiven or forgotten.
It so refreshing, you two talk about things that I think about re gaming, and not just about what's the current toxic discourse. Loving the show!
I kinda picky with my games anyway so I never really do pre-order.
Really enjoy the series guys, keep it up.
I wish game media outlets pushed harder against this stuff a decade ago. It’s too normal now, no going back.
They did
@@johnhowetv No they didn't. We didn't have TH-cam. We didn't have content creators. Social Media didn't exist in 2001 when they wanted us to preorder GameCubes and PlayStation 2 games. We had Game Informer and Nintendo Power.

I haven't pre-ordered in 15 years. Can't believe people still pay for shat up front that often launches broken.
What I hate the most is NRS locking characters behind a preorder bonus when they’re in the game disc already….
Better to wait for sales. Better, more finished game for lesser price ✅
Exactly. And there is so much stuff out there to play anyway. You can never truly catch up. No game is worth $70 imo but eventually every game reaches its correct price
I love these two, what a gift Tamoor and Lucy are to the gaming community
Who asked
I agree, limited editions/collector editions are my exceptions to preordering certain games but I’ve never had any issues with the games i preordered, my taste in games prevent me from getting burned.
Don’t kid yourself. Most of the pre-orders are for cosmetics and in-game currency.
@@sam19270 he's entitled to his own view, don't belittle it.
Feels like saying that is like 15 years too late
This is at least 12 years to late
I learned this lesson 10 years ago. Can't believe people stil fall for it.
Diablo 4 comes with preorder bonuses. The reviews are already out. Game is out in a few days for standard edition. What’s gonna change in 3 days that makes buying it now a bad thing?
I recognized this as a scam from day one, can't believe people fell for it AT ALL!
I did for PC jedi survivor after promising myself that I would never do again after cyberpunk...yeah, it went as well as you expected, I'm holding myself for FFXVI this time
Also said the same after Cyber, then was a second away from confirming my purchase for Jedi survivor, but didn't. Also holding for FF ha ha
It was time to rethink preordering games 15 years ago yall
I appreciate both your candor and intelligence, Lucy and Tamoor. Your personal lexicons are on point.
The scene then switches back to Magneto who now quips "That's why the pawns go first."
The pawns in my case are early adopters.
It was time about 10 years ago
Yep, they don't get my money until i see reviews on bugs and performance.
If it comes out broken, i wait and buy it when it's fixed.
As a bonus that usually means that i can pick it up for a discounted price.
A perfect example of this is Cyberpunk.
I bought that when the "next gen" update finally released.
I paid half the price compared to launch AND i got to play a game that looked and ran great.
This is how i approach EVERY game now.
I think this message has been years overdue. Glad to see GameSpot shining some light on the subject.
Bro that time was like 10 years ago. I only preorder collectors editions and hardware.
Even i waited on Zelda TOTK, and Nintendo do a fantastic job of releasing bug free as possible games.
Like there's really no benefits to it unless you are a TH-camr and doing a review .

(lookin at you CoD)
seriously good show guys ...cheers
Totalbiscuit was saying this way back in the day, probably since 2012.
Btw, you can usually return a pre-ordered game after a beta, so they are actually a great way to get plenty of time to try out a game without risk.
i pre-ordered the batman arkham knight batmobile edition and then they straight up cancelled that edition and i didn't get the sick batmobile model.
The coldest take in video games.
*Imagine preordering Gollum or Redfall* 🤯😠
Has been time for 10 years now

Yes, I’ve got the Halo 5 display too! It’s awesome.

GameSpot saying what IGN would never 😛
I've been hearing so many content creators echo this over the last few months.
But nowadays, the moment they are made "available" online they all vanish :(
Great show guys... keep it up👍
I’m actually usually FOR preordering.
Great conversation, fun show to watch! :D
i always wait for launch, skim reviews and watch a few gameplay videos (usually vid 1 of someones playthrough series) before i buy.
Only pre-order collectors or exclusive edition.
For collection purpose. 😊
I pre-order 1-2 games knowing that 300% I will play this game. Yeah wishlist works just for getting to know games are good or not. 2021-2023 is the perfect example in gaming industry. So I buy 3-4 games in total per year which makes me happy about it 😊
Now you tell me. I just pre-ordered 7 games, ugh.
What is a matter with you?
I only pre-order in the UK because of the online deals. I'd still cancel if the reviews are consistently bad or if I don't think I'm gonna play it immediately. Games get marked up pretty high on the day of release so I'd have to pay those inflated prices if I want to play on day one.
Que buen show ❤. De acuerdo con ustedes. El último juego que compré en pre order fue Halo 3. Fui a una gamestop por el a las 12 😢
If I don't, I can't get the game on day 1 and go to Walmart (last resort).
was really nice one, im a new listener, pretty spot on.
If game journalists from GameSpot truthfully wanted people to stop preordering games they wouldn’t write articles about where to preorder each edition and what the digital bonuses are.
Bingo. Paid articles as well
I never pre-order
I wait for reviews and then buy on disc. It's so good:
- I see reviews
- I pay 60€ instead of 80€
- I get it a day early
I can admit I still preorder sometimes but the biggest reason that I do is “at that current time I have the money to do so” so I get it then rather wait for life to happen then my check engine light comes on😂
I'm surprised they made this type of video, I'm so impressed 👏 now please make one on how predatory "free to play" games are
The last game I preordered was cyberpunk and I learnt a good lesson from that
You really do have to look into the game and what you actually get with the pre-order and is it worth compared to buying the game on/after release with a dlc pack etc, not to mention buying for a remastered or a remake what's different from the original and if you still have the original and can play it as well.
