In World War II movies, the story is often told: one admirer of a girl dies, another begins to comfort the girl and she regains hope for happiness. But the other man dies too. Here they wanted to do something like this. They should have given Colin more screen time and created an additional story branch. For me personally, it was not obvious that Victor loved Vera very much until she had began to talk with him about it... I was surprised by the scene on the bench. This indicates flaws in the script. I should have expected this scene, not surprised by it. And before that, they showed us that she was not indifferent to him, but they didn’t show us at all what he felt for her. He even seemed to me not involved enough. And this scene doesn't fully reveal his inner drama either. This is a hole in the plot. And in such a terrible scenario, Colin, with his loving eyes, did everything possible to bring this drama to the surface for us to see. * This scene actually duplicates the scene on the bench, maybe so they removed it. But it reveals Victor's empathic nature.
