Marius van Dokkum (Andijk, 1957) is een Nederlandse kunstenaar en illustrator.
De schilderijen van Marius van Dokkum (1957) bestaan uit portretten, stillevens en vrije onderwerpen. In zijn vrije onderwerpen komen meestal eenvoudige mensen voor in hun eigen leefomgeving. Mensen die ondanks hun eigenaardigheden toch sympathiek overkomen.
Marius van Dokkums werk wordt gekenmerkt door de vele details, er is zoveel op te zien. Vaak hebben zijn schilderijen iets humoristisch. Van Dokkum is van mening dat humor het werk toegankelijker kan maken.
“Ga jij maar illustreren”, zeiden ze op de Academie in Kampen. Dat was goed gezien. Marius kwam naar de academie om de technieken te leren: werken naar model, schilderen met olieverf, de kunst van de aquarel en de pastel, maar bovenal om zijn verhalen te leren verbeelden.
Van Dokkum is een verteller, hij zoekt naar manieren om zijn indrukken weer te geven op een anekdotische manier. Met humor, soms neigend naar grappen en grollen in de tradities van 17de eeuwers zoals Jan Steen en de gebroeders Adrian en Isack van Ostade, boertig - om het oude woord te gebruiken - met toch hier en daar een boodschap. Maatschappijkritiek en relativering zoals Nederlandse kunstenaars de eeuwen door op het lijf is geschreven.
