I admire this man and all of his descendants. I wish nothing had happened to this great man that has for generations cause great pain and anger in his descendants. I pray that they receive justice. It's a disgrace to what happened to monument Avenue in Richmond Va. The Governor and Mayor call it progress but you can't erase history. Richmond is and forever will be the capital of the confederacy. Richmond is my hometown and that's how I will always remember her and this great Lee family. Long my they live. I hope one day that this mayor receives the justice he deserves!

Anyone notice how beautifully they wrote back then, not only the courteous manner, but the calligraphy?

    •  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Their vocabulary was much broader then also.

They had values and morals back then. Something we know nothing of today. It is scary to think what the human race will be in 30-40 years.

I'm 4 years too late lol but yes you are correct ,I always write with attached lettering because that's how we were taught at school in the 80's ,alot of people can't read my hand writing but too bad for them not my problem lol

Calligraphy was taught every year in school, it was also part of college. Not only did they learn it, they mastered it. They didn't have typewriters, so everything was written by hand and it was as important then as being able to type is to us today. Another thing they did in schools that isn't done anymore is reading the Bible. It was a requirement in most, if not all schools, even college. When we threw God out of the schools, there was a sharp moral decline.

Funny.... my great great grandfather also went to Washington University. He was a courier for the Confederacy during the war. And like the person in this video he had to leave college after a couple of years, in his case, he was needed back home to help run the family farm since his father died. Unfortunately we don't have anything in Lee's hand but we do have a letter that my great great grandfather sent to his mom telling her that he had met with Gen. Lee and that Lee said that he would be refunded his tuition for the remainder of the term.

One thing I don't think people realize is writing paper was not cheap back then and wadding up mistakes was expensive Obviously this wasn't the only reason good penmanship was emphasized, but it certainly was a factor. If I'm not mistaken school kids of the 1800's had to supply their own paper. It's funny, but I read somewhere that spelling was subordinate to penmanship in the Colonial times LOL!!

I love to hear about history close to where I live. It’s where you can read about it and go visit it like the crater in Petersburg Virginia. Young people are hell bent on destroying history and should be embracing history . We have grown from a barbaric country in to a country equal for all. Just like all other countries have done. You have to progress. We are stepping back as a country when we have the younger generation destroying artifacts and historic statues. They are the Nazi’s of today and can’t see it?
