That’s always been one of my favorite lines of the film too (both films actually). Esteban loves Bill and considers him as his son, and he knows Beatrix wants to kill Bill...but he also knows how much Bill loves her and wants to see her again. This is a great scene
This scene perfectly captures one those timeless scenes in life that can offer themselves to anyone who's at the right time at the right place but moreover who's also palpable to it, atuned to pick up on such subtleties, atmospheres and a uniquely balanced æther. These sort of episodes in life that never last any longer than a time of day are what anyone with a heart and soul born for passion appreciate more than anything in life and are always on the lookout for if its been long overdue. Times of day such as this when everything slows down because the environment knows it has precisely the time it needs to let everything for which it is the right time and place simply unfold, together with the scenery in which they are found, form the ideal backdrop to which the most important and deeply felt, intuitive life lessons are learned: those which just come along simply with the joy of living in that moment at that place. "I wouldn't want to be anywhere else but here. I wouldn't want to change anything at all." (All Saints - Black Coffee) What this scene points at and shows us is what you'd call the perfect balance of passion and compassion. "Ah. How else is he ever going to see you again" while Summer Time Killer invades the scene, and Esteban fades away; that's a beautiful piece of directing, there.
What's such a weird and amazing detail of this performance is how never fully closes both his eyes, he does these weird half blinks, as if he trained himself to never fully close his eyes to someone so that he could always see them coming. such a small detail but it also increases the weight of every blink he throws her way. If you really think about it, Esteban Viahio, was the most dangerous of all the characters in Kill Bill: 1.) Extremely flattering to a degree where he disarms you into a false sense of safety. 2.) He looks old sitting in that wheelchair and pretends to be retired but, it's made clear that he's the leader of a ruthless gang. 3.) He was already waiting for Beatrice as he asked what happened to her last vehicle. 4.) He tells her flat out that he would've cut her face if she would've betrayed him, thus showing what he did to the other woman and making fun of her by blowing kisses at her. 5). He is also aware of where Bill lives, down to the address, which means he's extremely well informed. 6.) He's a heartless pimp as he doesn't care about sending her to what he thinks may be her death. Also the fact that he sides with Bill innthe first place. As if Bill was in the right and she should be punished. Even cutting her face for what she done was way to far. But you're right, it gives you a straight up idea of his character and could not have been acted any better. The fact that this guy played the sheriff as well is insane.
while I still think that bill is the most dangerous, this scene really showcases where Bill got his ruthlessness from. Especially seeing as how he tries to start shit with her by showing her one of the whores he sliced up. Even as a ruthless pimp, he's trying to protect his son

This scene is so interesting and I didn’t really appreciate it when I was younger watching it. As a kid I was bored at this scene wanting to see her clash swords with Bill already. But this scene is very important. It develops Bill’s backstory very well in only 5 minutes. This character is very interesting as well. It’s clear that while both Esteban and Beatrix have a polite demeanor toward each other, they both were prepared to kill each other if necessary. Beatrix probably didn’t expect him to cooperate. She may have needed to kill his subordinates and torture the information out of him like she did with Sofie. In contrast, Esteban knew she was dangerous. The subtle “I would have just cut your face” remark followed by deliberately calling over the whore who had a permanent slit across her lips, no doubt for crossing him in the past, so much that she was constantly drooling - it was a subtle threat, to show what happened to ladies who crossed him and his gang, and that even retired, he still was not to be trifled with. But they were both fortunate. He gave her the information she needed willingly because he loved Bill and knew he’d want to see her again. And so she went on her way with no blood shed. This could easily have been another “house of blue leaves” scene where she ended up fighting an army of Acuna boys. But Tarantino took a different direction with this movie. It’s these little things that make me appreciate this film so much.
Michael Parks was such an underrated actor. His portrayal of a complete psychopath in Tusk was what made that movie not be a complete disaster. Kevin Smith and Tarantino really brought out Park’s talent! R.I.P.
After he says the “If we had met when I was back in business…”, Esteban pauses and his upper lip curls in a very dangerous expression. Almost like he would bite.
Most of it maybe. But the end, the statement that Bill WANTS to see Beatrix again (and that Beatrix really did not believe that) is important to set up the final scenes.
I think it’s important because We see kind of 3 male figures in bills life. Hanzo Pai Mai and Esteban. We see the three men that raised him. You can clearly see in this scene where bill gets his charisma charm and also his cruelness from
It literally brings both films together. It’s the final piece of the puzzle she needs to find Bill, while also giving her the final motive to actually kill Bill after she saw what Esteban did to the girl. Esteban was the final father figure of Bill we meet. He’s where Bill gets his charm and personality from but also his cruelty towards women. Without this scene, Beatrix would’ve just kept killing.
This is my favorite scene in both movies it's honesty is what makes me love it. When he said he would cut her face he wasn't joking, but the look B gives Esteban afterwards is worth all the Crazy 99's, lol. She not only loses respect for him, if she had any at all, though there may have been a speck. She now wants him dead. But her objective is Bill. Without Esteban no Bill, but we know now where Bill got his vengeance from.
A small detail that I love in this scene is how Esteban explains to Beatrix that unlike bill, he wouldn't have killed her, but only scarred her. Shortly afterwards when he calls the girl for a drink, we can see how her face is actually scarred. At that point Beatrix understands that no matter how elegant and polite Esteban is, he remains an animal just like Bill. At that point the bride is clearly enraged by the girl, and probably barely stops herself from making another massacre.Incredible performance by everyone, Una Thurman above all.
Nah, Uma is nowhere near Michael Parks’s level in this scene, let alone above him. She’s fine, but she doesn’t have much to do, except be subtle with her expressions.
Hands down one of my top 2 or 3 favourite performances of all time. A tiny, tiny part that is so perfect in every possible way. An effortlessly smooth, calmly charisma radiates off of him at every moment, underpinned by an vague, unsettling air of threat. It's perfect.
When Esteban said to Bee Bill would want you to find him and she said now that I don't believe. It made me think she did not know bill at all. Love the movie. thanks for sharing.
He obviously understood Beatrix's need for revenge. Yes Bill was like a son to him but in their kind of world, family ties biologically or adoptive doesn't mean anything. Old fashioned eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth and heart for a heart. I mean if it were that simple then Beatrix would have let Vernita live for having a family or Bill live because he was the father of her child.
"Beware of the old guy in a profession where men usually die young". If Bill didn’t wanted to meet kiddo, Estaban would have killed her the moment she entered his brothel. He is not like O-rens gangs who kept only swords. I loved his character.
In Japan Yakuza are not allowed to use weapon and since Japan is a country that has rule to forbid firearm rule, and the reason why Yakuza use sword when there is a territorial war occurred it only kills the enemy since sword were meant to built to kill its target directly up close but if you use fire arm the bullet sometimes could hit unsuspected civilian.
The way Esteban mentions that he would have just cut Beatrix's face, and then has *that particular girl* get them drinks...and also how he watches Beatrix's reaction, shows that even that elderly the man is still a calculating SOB.
This scene was meant to be the final motivation to kill bill. She meets his father figure and immediately sees where Jill gets his charisma and personality from but also his cruelty and violence. Beatrix and Esteban are the same types of characters. I’d go so far as to say, she might even respect Esteban.
I used to dislike this scene. I felt like it slowed the pacing of the movie as we were getting so close to the climax. But every time I watch the movie, I appreciate it more and more. Maybe it comes from getting older, maybe it comes from broadening my tastes in film, but I absolutely love this scene now. This movie really is a masterpiece.
4:20 - Love the pose Uma does here. It's very...expansive. It's like, I had fun with our little patter just now, but I came here for a reason. Now your whores are making faces at me and I'm getting a little antsy, your dirty old man routine is wearing thin, and I wouldn't mind tearing this whole place down if you don't stop beating around the bush pretty soon. Maybe I'm reading into it too much haha. His response is also wonderful :)
Love this movie 🖤 one of the best movies ever ...EVER.... made! And Mr.Parks just brought this character so much complexity and depth. Great actor (rip) very underrated.
I guess I’m paying more attention to this scene watching it in isolation, but I never realized how much barely contained disgust she has for this old man. Kind of interesting because that same charm is what attracted her to Bill, but now she sees through it to the rotten core.
What's impressive about Parks's take on the character is he more or less would have created it spur of the moment, due to Ricardo Montalban not being able to make the table read. Parks was on hand, and so Quentin asked him to stand in for Montalban. While we don't know how much of that initial take made it to the screen, it must have been impressive enough that it convinced him pay off Montalban and given the role to Parks.
"I must warn you, young lady, I am succeptible to flattery." 😉 Esteban is one of my spirit animals! 0 f*cks given! Michael Parks is a #LEGEND! 🙌🏾 He deserves an Oscar, for his eye acting, alone. May he live FOREVER!
One of my favorite movie scenes of all time. Up there with colonel hans landa questioning the french farmer to see if he's hiding jews in Inglourious Basterds.
In the end, Esteban and Bill embody the same evil (no surprise since he had a big influence on Bill)... the sick way they relate to women they adore, the looks, the ruthless labor. I love how her well-mannered, flattered behaviour towards Esteban changes in this scene after she realises that he is as sadistic as Bill, having destroyed the woman's face who undoubtedly is a bit of a look-a-like of Béatrix.
I don’t think this makeup gets enough credit. Or the performance. I never knew he also played the sherif. I assumed they found an ordinary guy who was severely spanish.
And also, I love how you can tell “or at least as far as I can tell” he seems to genuinely care for his sex workers. It doesn’t look like he abuses them, he’s just a very interesting and unique character.
no one else mentions it but to me this scene implies that bill and budd were both bastard sons of esteban's operation and that Bill may have gotten his start as a career killer as one of the acuna boys. he is fatherless, but Esteban looks over him abs takes him in. taking him out to the movies as a kid gives that away

02:51 that face expression is superb.
The winks are amazing
I was literally watching that facial expression when I read your comment 😮😅😅😅😅🎉
Damn thats some fine acting there... Michael Parks was amazing. The accent, the movement, the expressions, all of them spot on.
My goodness... I am a slave for this movie since i was 7... what a movie a masterpiece
Cute
4:20 - Love the pose Uma does here. It's very...expansive. It's like, I had fun with our little patter just now, but I came here for a reason. Now your whores are making faces at me and I'm getting a little antsy, your dirty old man routine is wearing thin, and I wouldn't mind tearing this whole place down if you don't stop beating around the bush pretty soon.
Maybe I'm reading into it too much haha.
His response is also wonderful :)
Fun fact: The brothel and prostitutes in this scene are real. They're not actors or a movie set. The place really does exist in reality.
I was considering a visit but I was not impressed by the Yelp reviews I read.
So the person bleeding was mmmm 😖
Adam twofer ones? asking for a friend
That’s Mr Michael Parks… your favorite actor’s favorite actor. He’s more versatile than a Swiss Army knife.
Michael Parks absolutely nails these 5 minutes on screen. Its uncanny that both his roles on these movies are completely diferent.
Michael Parks plays this role amazingly. I must say, the unique performance you can never forget. Absolutely.
Is it weird that I have this on when I’m trying to get to sleep.
I randomly recall this before going to sleep lol
No, not at all. This is very asmr-ish
I do this with the Marsellus Wallace speech.
me to xd
“Aaah, Bbilll” I love how he says it with thst husky Spanish accent
had no idea Michael Parks played this roll and I never would have guessed. He did such a good job.
One of the best non ASMR, ASMR’s.

Michael Parks performance is Stella. He’s in the movie as this character for 4 minutes and absolutely kills it.
Love this movie 🖤 one of the best movies ever ...EVER.... made! And Mr.Parks just brought this character so much complexity and depth. Great actor (rip) very underrated.
Woah, this is actually the sheriff in part 1. I had no idea, even though his face is right there. Pretty good acting.
Apparently this actor was actually younger than David Carradine
The power of makeup and great acting
This is the best Antonio Banderas impression I ever saw!
What a lovely 5 minutes that was.
Just searched this scene so I can compare Katya’s impression. I am howling 😭💀
lanaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa muah
My goodness, what an excellent scene! His dialogue and subtle gestures, pure art.
dude was so traumatized by the wedding massacre he went from being a Texas ranger to being an old mexican dude
An old mexican pimp
This is one of the most golden scenes in movie history
His accent and voice cured my ocd after watching for couple of times
I had no idea until now that this actor, Michael Parks, ALSO played the sheriff at the scene of the church massacre.
"I must warn you, young lady, I am succeptible to flattery." 😉
Esteban is one of my spirit animals! 0 f*cks given! Michael Parks is a #LEGEND! 🙌🏾 He deserves an Oscar, for his eye acting, alone. May he live FOREVER!
The scene starts off as if you're talking to a well mannered gentleman, and devolves into a conversation with a violent psychopath.
3:42 If you are looking for Katya's reference
lanaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa muah
OH MY GOD THIIIIIIS IS WHAT KATYA WAS REFERENCING IN THAT EPISODE OF UNHHHH
Can never forget that scene ;) thank you Mr Parks
Ivailo Markov love this scene, is he the sheriff from the church scene? If so he’s a top actor
today yeah he was
Good scene, great acting, and Uma is beautiful.
"Bill, where's Bill"
Fay, where's Fay!
3:42 all I can think about is Katya after seeing this 😭💀
Lmao I came here because of Katya I haven't even seen the movie I just typed in "kill Bill Spanish" 😂
@@nellyioannidou5612 you really need to watch the movies!
THE. ACTING. IS. PHENOMENAL. He’s literally acting from his toes to his eyelids!!!
4:28 Where’s beeelyahmMmm
LMAOO oh my god
Michael Parks.. He was a fantastic character actor. Stellar in any role for any script you threw at him.
Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolochikova sent me here
This old codger is smoother than silk.
One of my favorite movie scenes of all time. Up there with colonel hans landa questioning the french farmer to see if he's hiding jews in Inglourious Basterds.
Michael Parks was awesome in this role, and his accent was superb, just fun to watch
de posey died......hmm
Poosey lolz
This is some of the best acting I have ever seen.
Awesome! Just awesome! What an actor he was...amazing! I have to rewind this scene a few times
He killed 😂
'I must warn you that I'm susceptible'
I don’t think this makeup gets enough credit. Or the performance. I never knew he also played the sherif. I assumed they found an ordinary guy who was severely spanish.
And also, I love how you can tell “or at least as far as I can tell” he seems to genuinely care for his sex workers. It doesn’t look like he abuses them, he’s just a very interesting and unique character.
The first commenter is the type of mind that would thank him for the opportunity to be his sex worker lmao
@@ilikeheavymuzic135 that was for betraying him tho
@@QualityMasters damn you suck at watching movies
Terminally latin
''A friend of Bill's mother'' ok I get it now...
do you think Esteban pimped out Bill's mother too, or do you think Esteban is actually Bill's biological father?
@@tutuldok I think Esteban is Bill's stepfather/father figure and Budd's father.
no one else mentions it but to me this scene implies that bill and budd were both bastard sons of esteban's operation and that Bill may have gotten his start as a career killer as one of the acuna boys. he is fatherless, but Esteban looks over him abs takes him in. taking him out to the movies as a kid gives that away
Michael Parks was awesome both roles in these movies showed his talent. But this one superlative. Rip dude ❤
Anyone here from UNHhhh with Trixie and Katya? No? Just me? Ok.
it wouldve been mad if ricardo ended up playing him, but Michael Parks does an absurdly good job
Which Ricardo?
Andrei Timofeev
Montalbán
