This is legendary I was looking for it all day having not watched it in awhile and for some reason thought it was Lugansky playing it. Oh well. If I were to guess she just played the original so he one-upped her. All the comments about mistakes are funny because this is clearly a fun impromptu performance without warmup, nothing serious... are we not allowed to see that moment in people's lives? That's why we treasure videos like this, they are few and far between - and so relatable.
An advice for all piano students wanting to impress girls (or other boys, of course): Learn Chopin Godowsky Waterfall. Did you see the expression on her when the octaves come? Even before he starts, she was like "VIDEO!!!!" He missed a lot of notes, but you get a LOT of concession when you try to play monstrously difficult music without a warm-up.
@@purity4521 I already played it, the left hand version the number 2, 10 years ago, since I had to stop playing piano because I injured my wrist. I also played the number 48, 36, and the 23 to 28.
Frighteing technique! Like Oscar Peterson said about the first time he heard Art Tatum on the radio, "Gee, this piano duo are really great, I wonder who they are?" --- similarly, it hardly seems a single pair of hands should be able to perform this Godowski torture-etude... Wonderful, and thank you for posting this.
This man has the Qualities of Czerny Beetnoven Chopin Alkan and Godowski combined ! At 2.01 we see that the student at the right is stunned by the overwhelming art of the composition and the way it is performed.
WOW! Reminds me of Jorge Bolet playing it. The guy has phenom fingers. The right hand octaves were ridiculous, insanely fast. The relaxation required to do that is amazing? That was fun.
Can someone let me know if these studies are commonly used for people entering the Chopin Competition or of people at that level? Any insight would be appreciated
Not at all ideal for the Chopin Competition. In fact, I don't even believe they're allowed. For a pianist's own concert or so, it would suffice, but for the competition that adheres to the true emotional and technical complexities of Chopin's original works, it would not.
Absolutely wonderful octaves in the ossia version midway. I hope he rerecords this - my favourite of the Chopin-Godowsky elaborations - when he is fully warmed up, but this still marvellous. The reason I’m going to replay it immediately is those octaves. There is an astonishing live version of this piece on TH-cam by Jorge Bolet (sound only, 1979). He's younger than he was when he made all those Decca albums, and the performance reveals just how phenomenal he was in his heyday: th-cam.com/video/YmgAidXQNAo/w-d-xo.html
I agree, albeit I'd like to suggest you taking a glance at Boris Berezowski's performance of the Waterfall in original version and in Godowsky's. (YT video-unfortunately a smartphone recording- still it's a stunning rendition).
@@INDIGOBLUE555 Wow! Thanks for pointing me towards the BB performance!! His technique is stunning - AND he also plays all the octaves!!! I must confess that most of the Godowsky arrangements leave me cold, but this first one is an exception. Glorious!! If you like modern tonal music, I can't resist mentioning that right at the end of Magnus Lindberg's Piano Concerto No 2 there is a brief but clear reference to the last etude of Chopin's Op 25 set (sometimes, I believe, called the Ocean). All the original Chopin studies are masterpieces, of course, but if I had to choose just one, it would probably be Op 25 No 12. Thanks again for the Boris B!!!
It's nice? It's not just technically extended or 'flashy', Godowsky draws out contrapuntal lines held latently in Chopin's original and makes audible certain concepts that weren't audible, in the original.
The original is still (much) harder in these aspects: 1. Demand on clarity and cleanliness. It’s almost all right hand, a single wrong note will be heard clearly. 2. The runs span 4 octaves in one hand instead of 3ish. This requires a lot more stamina and focus for the right hand. 3. The tempo marking is much much faster. The performance standard for Godowsky is also quite low. Chopin etudes require fresh interpretation and flawless execution to be considered a good performance.
Those aspects are more challenging and yet the complexity and endurance required of the Godowsky overshadows these points massively, which is why there are 100+ that play the original for every one that play this.
