    Older pianist here. You get an A for trying such a challenging work of elite difficulty...I'd very much praise and applaud you for trying this in private, but for a public display, this is very sloppy playing and is far too difficult for you.

    Frighteing technique! Like Oscar Peterson said about the first time he heard Art Tatum on the radio, "Gee, this piano duo are really great, I wonder who they are?" --- similarly, it hardly seems a single pair of hands should be able to perform this Godowski torture-etude... Wonderful, and thank you for posting this.

Just so you know, Libetta is a much-revered expert in this repertoire with very rare and extremely high technical skills. You on the other hand are embarrassing yourself by not knowing or understanding what you are talking about.

    This is legendary I was looking for it all day having not watched it in awhile and for some reason thought it was Lugansky playing it. Oh well. If I were to guess she just played the original so he one-upped her. All the comments about mistakes are funny because this is clearly a fun impromptu performance without warmup, nothing serious... are we not allowed to see that moment in people's lives? That's why we treasure videos like this, they are few and far between - and so relatable.

    Wow this is a legendary video EDIT: Even more legendary than I thought. His utilization of the glissando ossia was way more natural than I was prepared for. Also, his voicing is so nice and pronounced (and not not neglected like most other performances). You can tell he really absorbed this piece and made it his own. I’m so shocked he hasn’t put out an album of the studies. The performances would be some of the best out there, and his interpretations are worth putting into a more permanent medium than random videos on TH-cam (no offense whatsoever; I’m grateful that these performances of his exist).

    • @brandonhwang4061
      @brandonhwang4061 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not at all ideal for the Chopin Competition. In fact, I don't even believe they're allowed. For a pianist's own concert or so, it would suffice, but for the competition that adheres to the true emotional and technical complexities of Chopin's original works, it would not.

  • @JamesSmith-mw7ps
    @JamesSmith-mw7ps 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The original is still (much) harder in these aspects: 1. Demand on clarity and cleanliness. It’s almost all right hand, a single wrong note will be heard clearly. 2. The runs span 4 octaves in one hand instead of 3ish. This requires a lot more stamina and focus for the right hand. 3. The tempo marking is much much faster. The performance standard for Godowsky is also quite low. Chopin etudes require fresh interpretation and flawless execution to be considered a good performance.

      Of course..😆😆

    • @calebhu6383
      @calebhu6383 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would argue that the stamina is worst in this etude if you play all the octaves. Otherwise you are right about the 2nd part.

    • @Cardstacker
      @Cardstacker ปีที่แล้ว

      Those aspects are more challenging and yet the complexity and endurance required of the Godowsky overshadows these points massively, which is why there are 100+ that play the original for every one that play this.
