    Thanks for the really nice jig. I've been tying for 65 years not just a little bit but five times a week or more for hours at a time 🤠. I came across you a couple of weeks ago and just got blown away!!! The preacher jig is just wonderful. So glad you are feeling better after the covid-19 . God bless you and your's 🤠. Dave Hughes

      Hi from the far North 🤠. Trying to get the word out on a killer fly. The little crappie fly. It's quite possibly the best panfish fly ever. I gave it to my buds at the fly shop and they're in 💕 Love with it . It's quite good on trout & crappie & bass. Look it up on u-tube. 🤠 Dave Hughes

    I inherited my grandfather's molds and lead pot, been pouring and making jigs for about 6 months now. I now only catch fish on jigs I've hand-made and it is incredibly satisfying. Your videos are terrific and informative, inspiring me to start implementing more colors and combinations - please keep up the great work, much love and respect

    Most of the preacher jigs I have seen utilize mainly long feathers in the back with buck tail up towards the front of the jig. With that being said i really like what you have done here with your version on the Preacher jig. There is a lot of stuff going on with this tie and I believe it all works really well. I tie jigs myself and may have to "borrow" this pattern from you. Thanks for sharing and I do like your videos. Small Jaw is my man but your a close second. Prost!

I look forward to seeing your other option at making a preacher jig. I don't have feathers long enough to make a proper one but who knows I might give it a stab anyway on my channel. Good morning Adam, ran across this video, took some notes and gonna give this 'Preacher Jig' a shot on my Big Hammer jig heads and try to create a shad looking bait. I'm a novice fly ty'er, but enjoy seeing what I can create. Less novice on fly tying terminology, but I've heard you mention that you like to cover up the thread wrap with some dubbing (got this one). Correct me where I'm wrong, but is the term 'palmer' or the art of 'palmering' where you wrap a feather around the hook shank or thread wrap area? Do you have any recommendations for entry level fly tying with learning how to tie flies. I'm mostly interested in tying big striper (shad) or bass (crawfish) flies. Hope you get this message on this older video, which was great to watch! I appreciate how you explain details and the why's. I checked out your website and signed up for notices as you have a lot of great custom lures. Thanks for sharing your faith in God with us! I too am a Christ follower. Have a great day and hope to hear back from you.

    • @SDGCustomLurecraft
      @SDGCustomLurecraft  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey Jack, I'm glad you found me! While I focus a lot more on soft plastics these days, there is something special about busting out the vise and tying a bait. I especially appreciate these preacher jigs - lots of room for multiple layers, materials, and techniques! Regarding your question: Yes, palmering is wrapping the feather around the shank. As you do you preen the fiber back so they overlap and build as you move up the shank. Regarding entry level recommendations: Much of that depends on the type (and size) or bait you want to create. Fly tying small stuff is much harder, but since you're after striper and bass flies you have some forgiveness. Be sure to use a waxes, strong thread (210 Denier Flat Waxed Nylon is a great choice). There are other options, and stronger (like GSP) but they are very slick and hard to use. The wax will help hold the material, make your life easier. Work in small "clumps" and add layers using only enough thread wraps to secure each layer - that will help control the material as well. Think about the profile before you start so you build your layers accordingly... a sideways teardrop is usually the goal (bait fish imitation anyway). Rabbit Zonkers make for great "claws" and they float, definitely check them out for any bass craw builds. Hopefully these have been helpful. If you haven't found him yet, look for "smalljaw"s channel. He's an OG and has MANY MANY tutorials using all kinds of materials. Soli Deo Gloria!

    Great audio, video, and instruction. As per usual, eh? Would UV resin be a good alternative for that thread collar?

    • @SDGCustomLurecraft
      @SDGCustomLurecraft  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thx Mike! I went through all 3 versions of Loon UV resin as a thread sealant and found none of them perform as well as superglue, Sally Hansen’s, or the Loon Head cement I used here. The seal wasn’t as “tough/hard” and over time it would peel off even after a thorough curing. Ended up selling it all! Go figure.
