Shubha (demon of ignorance) & Nishumbha (demon of slaughter)

It is with a highly excited mind that I type these lines below. Tears of joy and gratitude seem to gush out. Heart is full but apparently looks so light and feather like.
It is rarer than the rarest of an occasion when a guru gives Gurudakshina to his shishya , how much so ever nice the student may be. This is such an occasion . Deepu has done so . True, he is my sister’s son and might have received some help from me in his school studies. But he is the foremost of all my gurus in the area of music.
I remember vividly the hospital room in the year May 2019 in which the pallavi of this Lavangi of a song was born. There was a casual chatty type discussion between Deepu and me about the possibility of his composing and singing a fully classical song if I script a few lines.
Deepu asked me to give a try if I wish so. Since Goddess Saraswathy at the ancestral temple of my in-laws at Vaikam was so full of mercy upon me , the pallavi part got scripted in a few minutes. Since SHE showered even more blessings upon Deepu in another 5 minutes the composing of the pallavi was over, even with all the fine touches and sangathees. Then it was decided that we would finish the song and studio-record it later because Deepu had to leave for the US in a couple of days from then.
The audio part was finished soon in a fortnight or so, but the video could be taken only a few months ago in May 2023 when Deepu came with his family for the very next India visit .
Deepu often gives me facts, information , knowledge and ideas regarding music of all sorts . He is my guru along with a few others like Sarath Sir of the Cochin College and my family friend and relative Sreevalsan Varma and Edappalli Jaymohan.
I am deeply carried away by the kindness of Saraswathy Devi and all my Gurus.
Bhakthi for Saraswathy never goes unrewarded. This is Her reward for me.
Thank you so much for your heart-filling words. If I am able to sing or compose, you are the reason along with the god. I am also so happy and proud to give this gurudakshina of this quality (not because of my abilities, but due to your support and Devi's and Vettakkoru Makan's blessings) . But the journey has just begun. We will come up with more such projects !

Thank you Jayaram Sir for your friendship , love and appreciation for Deepu and his song. After madhyamam and Panchamam it is a quantum jump into nishadam. Is it not very difficult to land into it smoothly if one does not have the latent half or even lesser than quarter notes ?
BMK does it with the ease of a cake walk. He is a Gandharva . And doing what he has showed is not an easy job . BMK Eagan Ganapathi is still tough.
Hope Deepu sings that also.
Dear Rajendran sir,
Yes, it is difficult to quantum jump between these swarams if one is not trained or equipped to do so. One will slip easily. But Deepak sir has done Dr. BMK proud by brilliantly quantum jumping between Suddha Rishabham, Suddha madhyama and Suddha Dhaivatha and appropriately placing them throughout this krithi. He has alternated between flat notes and gamaka-laden notes to display Lavangi's beauty and grandeur. Also I don't know if anyone is aware about this, but there are traces of Raveendran Master's Aruna Kirana in this rendition which also has Western elements.
In the end as we all know, muraLi gANam is not limited to just Bharathiya Sangeetham but is definitely world music.
True Jayaram Sir. Muraliganam is much much more than classical music. There is nothing in music which Muraliganam has not contained. Gamakas are present in all possible strengths starting from almost zero to the maximum or optimally pleasant level. It never crosses the upper bound in strength beyond which a kind of unbearable “njaniaa punjattharam” lands in, making listeners like Deepu and me at least, go frantically in search of cotton to plug ears into total deafness.
Deepu has good voice range too. My joy is in that he has good well-wishers and learned friends like you.
