*I bought an 11mm f 1.4 and didn't know it was an ultra wide BUT I do a lot of talking head videos like what you're doing in this Video and I use a sigma 16mm f1.4 but I was thinking of getting a Sony G Lens which is 15mm f 1.8 and out of curiosity would I notice that much of a difference as one is a 16mm and the other is 15mm. What would be another good alternative to a 16mm APS-C lens.*
Do you have a full frame camera? Honestly you wouldn’t notice a difference between 15-16 without comparing the two directly next to each other. It all depends on what style you like. I usually film these talking head videos at 24mm but this time I went with the 18mm so that you could see the lenses on my desk. I prefer the 24 so I’ll be going back. But for other things like the shot of me looking close at my screen, the 18 was perfect.
@@SamHolland I have a FX30 & ZV-E10. The ZV I use the 11mm f1.8and on my FX30 I'm using the Sigma 16mm f1.4. I just usually do Talking Heads but don't need the 11mm as it's an ultra wide and I don't want that in my Room. So other then the Sigma what I was looking at the 15mm G Lens for the APS-C. What other lens could you recommend for the APS-C ; as I was thinking of the 15mm G lens.
The problem is: you use different lenses for different type of shoots... So run-and-gun I use mostly with my Lumix 20-60mm because it is light, and I will film with the 24-105 F4 when I need more reach or want extra stabilization. However: if I shoot greenscreen, or music video, or portrait, or any controlled situation, or in low light I will pick any of the 35/50/85mm F1.8. Next lens? Might be the 70-300 for the next vacation, or the 24mm, or the 18mm... Lenses are also an addition I'm afraid. All filmed on my S5iiX or S5 ofcourse 🤛
I bought into RF two years ago and figured out quickly that RF 28-70 f2 and RF 70-200 2.8 were it for 95% of my work, and 85mm 1.2 for portrait work / head shots. I sold everything else. Sadly for video they were a let down. Le sigh. So I’ve been building up Irix cine lenses since, and finally don’t need for anything how.
Nice one. Yeah as your work changes, so will your gear collection. It’s always fun trying new things too. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts 🤩🙏🏻🎥
I bought the S5II without the kit lens (body only), and a Sigma 28-70 f2.8. Fantastic camera and fantastic lens, it's a killer combo!!! With the S5II you have more or less two lenses for each lens 🤔just switch to crop-mode (works for most resolutions), it transforms my lens to a 40-105mm lens. I use this feature surprisingly often!
Hey man, just wanted to tell you, that the balance of humor and information ist just perfect. The delivered information is always on point, while its entertaining as well. well done!
Lumix 24-105 f4 is my go to. Has ois, a little macro, and with the 60fps crop on my S5 gives you get even more reach if you want it. She’s a big girl but my 50 and 85 prime have been collecting dust ever since I added it to my kit.
Great video Sam! I believe that you can do everything with just one lens (well almost everything) when your budget is tight. I have used just one cheap 50mm for 95% of my photography/video work for most of my 25 year old career. When you can't afford to buy multiple lenses you adapt and make what you already have work for you. It might be harder sometimes but it is totally doable.
This is great. I get asked for camera recommendations from beginners quite a lot. The thing is they often haven't considered lens choice yet. I'll share this video with them. Thanks Sam!
I started with a full frame equivalent zoom of 24-120mm f7-f11. That was decent at most things except wildlife. But it was crappy at low light and didn't look very cinematic. That tought me what I needed next.
My Favorites are RF 24 to 70 f 2.8 (soon to be RF 24 to 105 f2.8), My RF 100 to 500 and my RF 14 to 35 gives me everything I need but I do have 7 Primes and a 1.4 converter as well - but will that change if I make the change - cracking video Sam you are smashing it and a cool edit to MW 😁😁
Wow!!! That’s a lot of lenses!! 🤯 I bet your kit bag is bursting at the seams! 😂👏🏻 RF lenses are very nice though! What would it take for you to switch? What’s holding you back? But also, why do you want to switch?
I need to test the Auto Focus on Sports events and FPS for photos plus the need for a fast zoom lens up to 500 with a 1.4 converter ..... Why do I want to swap, mainly the video colours I love them also the Echo System seems Tickety-Boo plus the size ! Oh yeah sometimes I need two bags - may have all the gear but still no idea 🤣🤣
If I had to pick three lenses, which might be a good number to consider over time, I would go with (full frame figures): 1. 24-105 zoom F4 (or alternatively expensive 2.8) for everyday use 2. 80 mm prime for killing it sharp when needed 3. 200-300 mm zoom for lurking. 😂
Don't forget the questions: How fit are you? How long or far do you need to carry your gear? How shaky is your grip? How much warning do you get before having to take a shot? How shy are you? How long do you like to keep using stuff? With all cameras and lenses being good these days, little things make a big difference (size, weight, stabilization, focus speed). Thanks
Don't forget - do you feel good when using the lens? I love my 11-18 sony lens not just because it's wide enough for a stuff that I do, but also it looks like a proper lens and I feel cool using it, even if I'm just alone at home
I had no idea about lenses but found out on TH-cam that the 50mm 1.8 was a great lense at a great price so got that for my little Canon APSC. Had no idea what the 50 meant - I thought they were like numbers on a football shirt. I got a job filming an interview for a local company and all I can say was thank fu** the room was big enough!
