- Doing our best to replicate Polyface Farms Deep Bedding Winter Hay System. Inspired by Joel Salatin's system we are in the middle of using deep bedding for our cows this winter. We dont have a covering but we are making due with what we have and so far so good. This looks like the system that we will use for many years to come!

Cows are a beautiful tool if thier used as nature intended. I did basically the same thing last spring I ended up with a area with 12 to 15 inches of compost I added 4000 red worms. I haven't touched it yet but it's nice stuff.

Cows manure can provide a great food source for pigs
When its not raining too much, this can work.
Exactly. Whenever it rains we start over in a different spot. The trees do help a lot

pshh, 36 is balmy! -8f here, it won't get above freezing during the day until March probably.
Just curious - do you have issues with grass growing where the deep bedding is … or does the compost make it great for growing pasture …

White plastic buckets will crack in cold weather. Do not force values when frozen. They will break ,Ask how I know
None of my relatives have used the deep bed system. My guess it's a northern thing. How's the smell? Glad your trying it. Read about it, it's usually in some form of shed.
Literally zero smell. Only a sweet one from the compost

@@AgainstTheGrainDiet 5c above norm happy with that. We can fix every problem even the made up ones just by putting the soil back. All politicians are corrupt left or right. We all need to go back to the land and f them. Can I kill a chicken on my land in UK and sell no they have us by the balls
Paint the Ibc totes black so that the sun heats it up faster.
It will help but they still freeze up. Paint also stops alge. I have 8 at my place.
