Title: Hans Niemann Wins CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
He mentioned recently on the GothamChess Podcast that the Thumbnail & Titles department recently hired on more people so perhaps there was some confusion with a junior titler
@@digital-nomadthey got confused trying to work out how to get Magnus into the title and gave up.
Thumbnail and titles give you views. Many wouldn't have clicked on the video had there not been a shocking title.
Levy betrays himself in retrospect
@@digital-nomad "...He mentioned recently on the GothamChess Podcast that the Thumbnail & Titles department recently hired on more people": Sure... There are _multiple_ people creating thumbnails & titles for Levi? Do you really think so?
Hey Levy,
I was at the event and it was a blast! My friend played in the open, and the venue in North Richland Hills, near Fort Worth, TX, was perfect for the tournament.
The GM matches were freakin' awesome! The seating behind the GMs wasn’t great for spectating, so most of us found better views on the sides. Sadly, it looked like less attendees were there. I had an awesome spot to watch the Chess Base India commentary, and you were hilarious! "What in the world is going on with this stream? WHY AM I SO BIG ON THE SCREEN!?!?" 😂 Shoutout to CBI for the great commentary!
Vidit was the nicest guy you'd ever meet! Hans was intense after that 10-move loss but kept fighting back. It felt like a chess MMA match! Since it was in like a recreation center, we even had hockey and roller derby players checking out the games. They seemed pretty interested, and maybe this type of event can bring chess to an entirely new group of people.
For a first-year event, it was super impressive. The stream definitely had its moments and the setup wasn’t perfect, but it was the most organized tournament I've been to. I’m sure next year will be even better with more marketing and polish. Can't wait! I think it would be awesome to have you join next year!
Cheers!
what a wholesome comment dude, glad u had a good time :)
@smnrch7279 man, it was such a fun event! My buddy and I entered the blitz tournament the first night after classical games were played (which he was in that tournament too). Got home at 3 am, them went back for another classical match for my friend, after the GM matches, got home at 2am, then up for the last 2 classical matches on the last day. Stayed out there after until around 10pm that day and got back home around 12am. It was worth every minute of lack of sleep!
Damn that's nice
Wholesome. It makes me want to watch future events like this, too.
@randomuser17184 highly recommend it! If you've got friends into chess, watch them like Sunday night football (but better, cause it's not football lol)

Levy failed to milk Hikaru’s loss to Alireza
I am totally with Hans on this one, *uc* traditional chess with invitations is so outdated, they should make all tournaments open.
Some high-level tournaments should be open only to all players who are ranked within the top N places as of a certain date.
@@jamesfolken3163 Obviously they need to have some pre-qualifier. But if it's effectively open to anyone who plays well and has an over the board rating.
who is 'they' in this sentence?
Invite only isn’t real sport.
Tons of recently created games have invitationals too, this is certainly not an “outdated concept”.
If you want to watch super gms play lower rated players watch titled Tuesday or something. But I also want to see competitive matches between the best. And in a sense many tournaments are open, in that they have an open side which winning gets you a seat in the next invitational, and many of these can earn you a spot in the candidates. So if you have the skill you absolutely can rise to the inner circle. It’s not some arbitrarily set “in” group, it’s just really hard to be one of the top 10 or so players in the world. People rise into and out of it all the time despite the best players largely playing in closed tournaments.
And of course the issue with Elo itself where it’s incredibly easy for super gms to lose tons of rating from lower rated players because if the drawish nature of chess.
As for Nieman specifically, believe it or not cheating has consequences. That’s true for any sport.
Imagine winning the *UNIVERSAL TOUR SUPER GRANDMASTER MATCH* and not even getting a belt.

Hans being blacklisted is seriously frustrating. Thank goodness he won so it puts pressure on them to invite him to more.

I’d say cheating is more frustrating
@@Rapidchess950but what if he actually didn’t cheat? There is no proof that he cheated vs. Magnus, but I guess you are in the “guilty unless proven innocent” crew.
Nah, if anything they'll censor his flag. Never expect any good from FIDE.
@@Deerjason Hans cheated in more than 100 online games. There is definite proof of that. I am part of the "guilty when proven guilty" crew.
Hey! I was at this tournament, and got first in the U1200 section!
As Levy said, the event and tournament was quite strange. There were problems and miscommunications in virtually every aspect of the tournament, but it was still great to be at!
There was more going on than just the match between Vidit and Hans, too. They had a press conference (which unfortunately couldn't be heard by anybody in the audience) between the the two, there was a scholastic tournament, and a blitz side event. Plus, Boston Mike was around streaming and playing games against people.
It was kind of funny watching these sports stars all playing chess in the sports center. Because the event wasn't communicated very well, there were a bunch of people at the center for other reasons (roller derby, ice hockey, etc.) who definitely knew the celebrities better than the chess players, but had no idea that they were right there!
I'm definitely looking forward to future Universal Chess Tour tournaments, especially if they learn and improve from the mistakes made during this tournament.

This was an absolutely cracking event in every way. Most people that I spoke to were following it from start to finish and had a brilliant time - and here in India we had to get up early on a Sunday to watch Sagar and his fabulous commentary.
This was way better than the clash of claims. Far and above, and personally I'd love to see many more like this.
I'm not a Hans fan but he and Vidit handled this super well and made many new fans. Hans' interview afterwards was excellent also.
You are being too harsh - and have been for a while now on Hans. Understandably - but this video doesn't come off well. Down to the thumbnail and the red eyes. Please, it's time to move on.
He may be divisive but events like this are doing chess a world of good.

99+ missed calls from Kramnik
I’m really happy to see Hans proving people wrong by winning a blitz match against another top tier GM, and even happier to see both Hikaru and Levy kinda burying the hatchet and recognizing Hans’s skill. Big win for chess and for American chess

Levy never fails to speak for himself.
WHERE IS THE VIDEO ABOUT HIKARU AND FIROUJA
Bro he’s not going to upload anything about it. He’s biased towards Hikaru, they’re friends and Hikaru would instantly drop any support he has for levy. Hikaru probably told him not to upload anything. Hikaru is desperately trying to hide and delete any footage of that match. Hans Niemann proved once again he has the guts to overcome adversity.
Funny story about the venue - it’s across the street from where I graduated high school and it’s a hockey rink. Never thought I would see something like this in a GothamChess video.
I was there (playing in the U2000 section), and I agree with you that the quality of production was pretty atrocious. The match was tough to see on the projector, the fans had to sit far away late at night, and the celebrity NFL event was a flop. Overall though, the tournament itself was fun and the GM games were exciting. Thanks for covering this!
I appreciate the attempts to reestablish Hans.
Why bother?
@rorykeegan1895 because his name got smeared for false accusations perhaps?

why are you not covering the hikaru drama as an unbiased chess content creator?
a) unbiased is one heck of a claim to make with all of the connections and relationships that levy has with people in the chess world.
b) do you just expect people to cover all drama that could be in their area? thats not how people or creators work.
@@rorycannon7295 well yes he should be covering someones bad and unprofessional behaviour during an official tournament lol. Thinking about invitation only tournaments. I feel like they should not be rated, nor contribute to qualifying for the candidates. Otherwise it is inherently unfair.
Play for prize money sure, but to get rating from selecting your opponent is wrong.
Shouldn't be allowed to obtain im or gm norms either. It might be easily rigged.

In 2024, Honestly chess should be played in Faraday cages. This isn’t about targeting anyone, including Hans. It’s about ensuring fairness for everyone. For Hans, this could be a chance to prove his integrity, showing he has nothing to hide. With technology becoming increasingly discreet, Faraday cages prevent cheating and safeguard the game’s credibility. For live streams, we can simply use LAN cables for the cameras. It’s a win-win, making chess fairer and more transparent for all.
