  • Daring, debaucherous, and a party behind every stage. Rock 'n' roll wouldn’t be what it was without the women who hung with the bands, but even some of the best-known groupies faded away with little to no acknowledgement.

When I was 19, I used to work for a recording studio group, which owned several recording studios. I got to know several sound and electrical engineers that had been on tour with several famous bands, and they knew every tour manager and concert promoter from the 1960s thru the 1990s. And the stories they would tell about groupies on tour were straight out of the Letters from Penthouse.

The summer before I turned 30, I decided to meet the bands that I wanted to who played a venue in the town next to mine. I looked right, don't let the cartoon avatar of a 50 yo fool you. At 29, I had blonde hair down my back, blue eyes and a Swedish face. I never once had to debase myself to hang out with either the bands or the roadies. Granted, I always brought pot for the boys. Most were family men earning a living, the ones who could tell the stories from Penthouse were always easy to spot which meant they were easy to avoid. I met some groupies along the way. Interesting girls.

For many young girls, it's a cool adrenaline rush to be with young, famous musicians. It morphs into a bad habit that they can't stop. A lot of these gals weren't just c*mdumpsters for the rock stars; many of them were a "home away from home" for bands on the road who were fighting to not burn out. Some of them were muses, inspiring rock anthems that will live long past their own lives. As we can see, most of them appear to have died lonely, far away from the glitz and glitter of their younger years.
I guess all I am saying, (having been a touring musician myself for some years) is that, for a lot of guys, these so called 'groupies' played their part in the scene that wasn't always very kind to them. The film "Almost Famous" paints a fairly realistic picture of the life a lot of these gals led.

He never returned her abuse, because he was much taller and more muscular than she, and he knew he could hurt her and HE would be found liable. Instead, he filed police reports of spousal abuse. The wonderful media & public were AWFUL to him - ridiculed him and threw high heeled shoes when he pitched. Yep. I worked at a famous rehab facility in the Coachella Valley. All these rock and movie stars can afford treatments. On the contrary their groupies never made enough money to afford rehab. As you saw they end up looking much older then their age.
They never belong to the close circle of their idols … who basically treat them as free prostitutes. Don’t even think they even invite them to spend the night in their hotels: once they had a release they kick them out of the room. These groupies sometimes spend the whole day waiting outside of the hotels rain or shine skipping meals so they would not miss their idols. And once the stars are done, security kick them out so their idols can get a shower before heading to a fancy restaurant.

Outside of Connie, who was more of a Little Rock fixture than just a groupie (she was a also a school teacher with a whole life outside of going to shows and meeting bands), most of these women had careers that either put them in proximity with musicians or long term relationships with musicians. Sable for example was a teen model and regularly featured in Creem magazine up to at least 1980. Sable was also a sort of representative for Rodney Bingenheimer and Star magazine and she and her older sister Corel (Iggy Pop's girlfriend post stooges), or other girls from Star would greet bands upon arrival in LA and get them to come to parties to be photographed for promotion (which is how she met Johnny Thunders). Tawney Kitaen really doesnt fit as a groupie either, she was a model and had actually dated Robyn Crosby since highschool, so she never really went out of her way to just sleep with famous people let alone musicians.. Tura Satana was a pretty well known touring burlesque performer in the late 1950s prior to her acting career, so she was constantly crossing paths with musicians who either played in the house bands at her shows or came to see her perform (which is how she met Elvis, who seems to be the only "rockstar" ever associated with her). And of course the GTOs were just a group of friends who were into the same things, who went to shows and befriended bands. They eventually became their own group and were more performance artists within the scene. They took on the title of groupies because it was shocking and garnered a lot of attention especially in the wake of Beatlemania and during the height of the free love/hippie movement; but they each had their own artistic talents and interests and weren't sleeping around with just anyone famous for the sake of it, they had genuine lasting friendships and relationships with the rockstars they were associated with. Its also important to note that a majority of the lore surrounding so called groupies in the late 60s-early 70s has been heavily shaped by Pamela Des Barres' memoir which was written in the 80s during the peak or the sleaze era. She sold millions of copies by framing the narrative around these women/girls on the fringes of music/art scenes as being "groupies" and telling "juicy" stories that may or in some cases may not be true (for example Pamela has regularly platformed Lori Maddox whose stories about her time as a "baby groupie" have been repeatedly debunked).
So, most of these women listed aren't actually typical "groupies" as today's understanding of the word would suggest. They were all active members of their respective scenes, they were not just showing up to have sex with anyone famous (except Connie, lol).

Sable had a child with Blondie drummer, Clem Burke, I wonder what ever happened to that kid who would be in their 40's now.

I was born in 75 and I was a budding adolescent when bachelor party came out. I fell in LUST with Tawney. I would obsessively watch bachelor party just to see her. Then I found whitesnake and she was in the videos. Omg I use to watch the "is this love" video OVER AND OVER I was obsessed with her. She was beautiful. Great legs. It's sad what she turned into with the plastic surgery.

Their back stories are very different, but someone like Connie Hamzy said many times that she was doing exactly what she wanted…Being from a little town in Arkansas, that was ,no doubt, the most exciting thing she was exposed to probably…..then,when she got (in)famous,I doubt she could find any suitors to take her seriously….she seemed like a really sweet but misguided, lady…I didn’t get the impression that she was one of those hardened ,calculating types that was trying to trap one of the musicians….who knows though…?

Interesting. I remember some of them from past news stories. Never thought of Kitaen as a groupie but no judgement. Women following powerful men is certainly not restricted to the music industry but it was good of you to do a video on these women that people look down on. I was young when they were happening and I thought they were cool and loving life. I may be wrong about that but I hope they all died with little regret.
