    The term “falling off the track” is a misnomer. There is a latch of the back and at the front of the body, each holding the blade in place until a cam pushes the latch out of the way. At that point, the built up spring tension flings the blade forward or backward to be caught by the latch not cammed open. During the blade travel, it is free moving within the handle. It does not get off a track; it just stops moving. Pulling the blade the rest of the way out or in simply enables the blade to be retained by one of the latches. While the blade is fully out, or in, there is no spring tension on it and the double action OTF knife is safe.

    Thank you for the video. It definitely played a part in me purchasing two of these. One for my brother and one for myself. I normally lean toward Benchmade knives but this OTF way undercut the price of any of theirs. It will be my daily carry. The OTF function really appeals to me especially with the dual action retraction of the blade. That's my biggest complaint with the other traditional auto blades I have since you have to manually retract the blade. Excellent video and super comprehensive. Thanks!

  • @rowdyron4111
    @rowdyron4111 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Really great presentation Aaron. I liked both of these knives. I have a couple of Microtechs, but their deploy/retract is brutal. That Hogue looks like you don't have to stand on the mechanism to get the blade back in. Now that I have several autos, I'm kind of over them. They are fun to fidget with.

    These knives have mirror polished edges straight from the factory. If you're one of those sissies that complain about the Microtech Ultratech's button being too hard to deploy get this Hadron. The spring button tension is perfect and the button doesn't wiggle at all, like that really matters anyway. This knife is a slicer, a gentleman's knife as all OTF knives are. I've owned Microtech knives for years and this knife is just as good if not better than the Ultratech. Great upload!

    Is the spring under tensi HK Incursion OTF Automatic on while deployed or recessed? I read a review on a different brand (microtech I believe) which stated the spring is not under tension while the blade is in or out, only while opening or closing the blade.

    I like the OTF concept but stumbled at the cost. Went to Grindworx from a recommendation and got two OTFs, the AKC F16 and a LIghtning. Both of these were under $50 each. Wasn't expecting much but their actions are strong, safety function works great, and they perform well. The recommendation came from a You Tuber who claims he has deployed the blade several thousand times without malfunction. I wouldn't use them for much more than a letter opener and such. They were purchased for the figitability they offer. Can't beat the price though. One major problem: the sound of deployment drives my wife crazy! lol

      I bought a Lightning from Grindworx, as well, and have been very pleased with it for the money. Not the best steel, and there are some friction marks along one side of the blade--near the spine, presumably from rubbing during deployment, but hasn't effected the performance. But for the money, the steel is fine.

    The blade to handle ratio is best on the microtech knives in my opinion. Plus they use better steel as well... I'm other words..... Get a microtech

    • @Justin666i
      @Justin666i 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try a Guardian Tactical Recon-035, much better blade to chassis ratio and designed by former Microtech employees. This is in both length and width, the Ultratech has probably the worst, and UTX-85 being the best, and Troodons are down the middle. Also try Heretic, same dimensions as Microtechs and operated by the owner of Microtech's son.

    • @no1up

      I refuse to buy from a company that treats thier customers like crap. I also read that you void the warranty by simply sharpening the blade. Or taking it apart for cleaning.

      Justin Digital I love the Heretics Medusa knife,it’s not an OTF but it is an awesome auto.their Manticore X OTF looks pretty awesome..I didn’t know Heretics was ran by the owner of Microtech’s son...I didn’t know the Guardian Tactical Recon OTF was designed by former Microtech employees either..I thought about picking a Guardian Tactical OTF but I’m leaning towards the Microtech Ultratech..they can be bought for under $300 and have a wide variety colors,blade designs and blade finishes..after I get the Ultratech I may eventually get a Guardian Tactical or a Heretics Manticore X.Im really liking the new color splashed Manticore X OTFs that just recently came out..I like the looks of all the premium OTFs but unfortunately,I haven’t got the opportunity to hold them in my hands and try them out personally..only OTFs I currently have are a couple of cheap Chinese OTFs I bought just to play around with.they have both hold up unbelievably well but the materials are obviously cheap and leave a lot to be desired.even still,they were enough to prove to me that OTFs are surprisingly much more durable than I originally expected..because of them cheap OTFs I am now confident enough in OTF knives to spend $300 (the Ultratech torture tests I’ve seen were quite impressive as well)

    You talk about "novelty" and if the extra $125 is worth the cost of an OTF when compared to a regular swing out blade, such as the Kershaw. One thing to consider is with the OTF, should the lock fail, the blade goes into the handle.
    With a regular swing out blade, when the lock fails, the blade goes into your fingers. Pocket lint can (and has) caused that failure. I'd rather pay extra for a safer knife than possibly have a mechanism fail and end up in the ER getting my fingers reattached. That will definitely cost more than $125 AND really hurt for quite awhile. And then there's the PT involved with learning how to use your modified hand that no longer has tendons running along the top of your fingers. Then again, maybe the mechanism won't fail.
    I agree with ApexEDC 88... Microtech. Definitely. Two different sizes for your grip considerations. They have the full size and then there is the UTX-85 which is 15% smaller.

    So, I'm not sure why it became normal to call these knives "OTF" considering that either scale is referred to as front scale and back scale, one end of the the knife is considered top and the other bottom, should really be OTT (out the top). Anyways, aside from that I find these knives ugly, blades are too small in comparison to handle thickness and makes them look awkward and unsymmetrical.
