I’m a little bummed I didn’t find this video before my trip to Costa Rica that I just got home from! Nonetheless, brought my tenkara rod, a Sawtooth, with me without knowing what to expect. Ended up finding quite a few Machaca (had no idea until the locals filled me in) in a couple tributaries of Rio Baru, near where we stayed. The bigger ones were breaking my 5 lb tippet, largest one I landed was ~10”, really fun fish once they’re on the line. I had a fair bit of luck in more turbulent water with dry flies, Adam’s purple parachute seemed to do the trick.
Ya honestly I think this fish will be on a lot of peoples radars moving forward, everything about catching them is just so fun! Obviously good and bad to that. More anglers/pressure. But in a place like Costa Rica where conservation of certain rivers and fish isn't happening more people fishing could be a huge help in preserving these fish for sure.

We took a family vacation to Costa Rica a couple years ago. It amazing. Next time I go back I'm taking my tenkara rig. Great stuff
