Ignition lock replacement Chevy van 1987, and fix slack in the steering column

This is a fairly simple job if you have fixed your car a bit before. You will need a steering wheel puller and a steering wheel lock plate puller and a small puller for the tilt lock on the steering column. No expensive stuff and if you are handy you can make this yourself. I have never done this job before and spent another good hour on the whole job. Sorry for the bad angle on camera, but hope the video can help someone.

Im stuck at the locking plate part.. do i need your specific puller? I don't understand how to bring the plate up w.o stripping anything

I'ts easyer iff you have that puller, but you can make it without. It's harder that way....

How did you remove the plastic part to access the other bolts to tighten up the steering column?

The last plastic ring around the steering column is attached with 3 screws. Be careful when you pull this part off, make sure you see how the slider for the main beam sits so you get this assembled correctly. I found this a little difficult, but with a little patience it will work. It is important to take it easy the first time you do this. Good luck 👍👍👍

@Hallgeir Fonstad thank you! It worked 🙂 I put everything back together tho and my high beams/ turn signals work but the part for the wipers turns freely so technically I can't select weather the wipers are on or off. Any idea of what i could have missed? Thank you for replying I appreciate it. 🙂

@@mrblack721 Could be the switch that is broken if it just goes around, these can be broken during disassembly or assembly. Or it could be an electrical fault, bad contact after such a job

What tool did you use to get those to lock bolts out of the side of the column to get to the other four to tighten those that

I found a special tool on ebay, can't remember what it was called. But I know that several people have made their own tool, you have to have a small bolt that you screw in and then pull the whole thing straight out, if you know what I mean....

Hi! What was the problem you needed to fix by changing the ignition key lock?
My gear lever does not move from park if the key is in ON position... If just lock open, the lever works... Sigh...

It was problems with the key, so I change the ignition key lock.
