The NBA doesn't have to do a thing. The owners got the league into this mess. They want their shiny toy to be the shiniest, and they're operating on an order of magnitude above even the players.
One owner could bust it up, though. A player comes to him with an outrageous demand. He says no. Then he calls a press conference and explains why he said no. Say it was Paul George. He just says, "I'm not going to pay a 34 year old 70 million a year in guaranteed money when I know the guy is no longer in his prime. He's missed half of our games in the last five years. I'm not paying top dollar for someone I can't count on for 82 games. I know you all want to watch winning basketball, but paying this guy isn't how it happens. I'm not going to hamstring our team's salary cap like this."
People would understand that. Oh, you don't think regular people would have a soft spot for a billionaire who talked to them and addressed their concerns? Take a look at who's in the White House.
An owner who said, "We might lose, but I'm not paying a pampered, oft-injured prima donna obscene amounts of money in exchange for drama," would get years of goodwill from the fanbase. If he made moves and drafted to improve, maybe longer. The dam would crack at that point. When the other billionaires saw him making money anyway, they'd copy him, no question.
The owners started this. The owners are going to have to fix it.

I understand both sides of the equation here…what I’d say, make 90-95% of contracts non-guaranteed. Only a select handful of players get fully guaranteed deals. Players that have tenure and resume in the league. Who have reputation for # of games played, season awards, performance, etc.
These max deals have become way too common. Only a handful of them actually deserve what they’re getting. Respectfully.

A bit of the problem is, that old players in the NBA can't go to a retirement league. If a soccer player is at the end of his career, he can hang up his boots, or he can go to the MLS, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, China Japan and so on and get another big contract. Or he goes back to his youth club or country and become a legend. Butler can't go back to his College team, and he could go to Europe or China, but he would have to take a big pay cut. And there is a stigma attached for US player to play oversees.

The same thing is happening in the NFL, ultimately these athletes make way too much money playing a damn game, they develop crazy egos and think they just deserve all the money. Sports in general need to have a serious conversation about the contracts they give out. No athlete needs to ink a 200+ million dollar contract just playing sports. It's ruining the sports, these guys get paid and decide to stop playing the sports. Look at guys like Zion, Ben Simmons. Other athletes see this and are like fuck it im doing that. Too many divas thinking they worth more than they are. When Paul George asked for that bag no one should have signed him, show him he's not valued like he thinks.

Players who've hustled from the g league for an NBA spot like Scottie Pippen Jr need to be highlighted more to improve the games image.

Shoehei didn’t go anywhere with Trout. Ernie Banks never went to the World Series. Tom Brady wouldn’t have done much without his defense.

This woud be known as the "Legitimate Injury Rule",( or maybe the Zion Rule). No more sitting on the bench, wit sunglasses, and a Louis Vutton sweater. You get a team-based medical robe. It should be any star that asks for a trade should be liable. He should be only eligible for a veteran contract. His current contract should be cancelled and he will given a veteran minimum contract for 3 years. After 3 years he should be allowed to have a good contract again.

I could not agree more. The NBA is a league of cry babies. No wonder the ratings are down. Talk about someone who forgot were he started. The guy used to be homeless... be grateful.

I've been a long-time fan of the league. But, this, along with many problems of modern NBA, has taken my joy away from the league. And, if not addressed or changed soon, i won't return. And that's the challenge the league currently faces.

Very well said, i agree with everything. But there is a problem, NBA is all about the money, owners, commissioner, media all of them care only about the money unfortunately and that reflects on players also. Most of them at least.

No one is here to see the owners. Power to the worker. They are the product. Complaining about their wealth ignores that 30 owners make the majority of the money, and LESS THAN HALF is divided up among the 450+ players.

6:05 it doesn’t matter how much revisionist history you did Paul George took the franchise further than it’s ever gone before ending of 50 year slump while Kawhi Leonard was injured. Paul George is literally the greatest clipper of all time due to achievements and wins not the BS numbers and accolades not the BS narratives that you were trying to push right now. No one has achieved more in a clipper uniform than Paul George. It’s just a fact he went to the conference finals without his running mate. No one else has even made the conference finals even with the running mate so you can fuck out of here with BS narratives.

U only get 50% of your salary for the regular season. Then u get another 10% for each playoff series u compete in. Only the teams that make it to the finals will get 100%. This would be super fun, but the players wouldn't agree.
Or just pay the players overtime for the playoffs. They barely get paid for the playoffs at all. NFL players get like 36,000 each for playoff games. If u make 34 mil a year, that's 2 mil per game, then u get to the playoffs and only make 36 thousand... not sure what nba players make, but pay them their reg per game income, plus OT, im sure that'll work and they'll agree

The nba needs to stop bringing in 18yr olds and go back to bringing in 3- 4 year college players. Come in at year 3, theyre more polished, more coachable, and appreciate the grind and love of the game. These kids are coming in at 18 and handed 100m. Of course they arent gonna work hard after that.
