If you're going to have a pet, especially around children, you should take care of it properly. If you want to properly care for a beta fish and set a really good and responsible example, they need at least 3gallons of water, a heater, frequent water changes (at least once a week), live plants, and a hiding place (to feel safe), they don't necessarily need a filter if you don't want to bother with one. You could turn the whole thing into a lesson for compassion towards even the littlest of creatures. My daughter loves my 3 bettas (in a divided 20gallon long), 3 fancy goldfish (in a 65gallon tank), my canary, two zebra finches, 2 cats, old dog, and the plants that make my home look like a jungle. We love to take care of them together. Caring for plants and animals with my caretakers were some of my favorite memories from my childhood.
