The Weller brothers set up a lucrative whaling business in Otago NZ around 1830, they tended to pay their workers with provisions rather than hard cash (hence the reference to these in the chorus).
If you want to know about the 'tonguin''? well I'm not going to tell you - you'll just have to go to a Kimber's Concert and have them tell you themselves (and NO it isn't rude!!).
The Wellers' success was relatively short lived as whale numbers declined, other whaling stations were in competition and Maoris resented them taking over their land.

This is the real deal. No autotuned, ultra compressed, perfectly synched, TikTok bullshit that sounds like you're in a climate-controlled Kia Sorrento. Kimber's Men makes you want to commandeer a ship and sack the port of your enemy.
All of the above may very well be true... although Kimbers Men often travel to gigs in a Kia Sedona..! We like a bit of space around us..
I love whatever the Kimbers men do, but I have to say that this is my favourite line up. I have a surreptitious recording of them when they came to Tunbridge Wells a few years ago. I played it nearly every day in lockdown and it helped keep me going. I quickly say I have bought their cds as well!

This is a tranditional song (a sea shanty).

Why is the guy on the right holding his ear?
He's covering his ear. It allows you to hear your own voice better so you can stay in tune. He's likely the bass, because the frequencies are lower it's harder to hear yourself when singing with others. Try it, sing something while covering an ear or two, you can hear your own pitch much better because your voice iterally vibrates your skull!
