Good to see you here again, Seven. No big deal about taking time off because your true fans understand about such things. Best of luck figuring out what the problem is. I feel confident you will. That's what makes life interesting. Having things to work on and fix, create, learn about and gain confidence and experience. Proud of your accomplishments throughout your video history. Also, chuckling about the fact not everything you come up against is easy peasy, it seems. I have the same luck. Take care and let us know how you're doing soon. Thanks for taking us along on your journey. Happy you can enjoy your time ... "out there" .
Wish I could help you but I'm clueless. Here's something that has helped me though - you may get a benefit as well. I got page protectors and a 3 ring binder. Every time I had any work done, everything went into a page protector for that job - receipt, instructions, warranty - whatever. That all went into the binder with newest in front. I did that for 3 cars over the years and it was hugely helpful. In your situation where you don't have a regular mechanic (Badge isn't always handy) who knows your vehicle, it might help people in parts stores find you the right part or in this case, help you to order the same one. Kudos for sorting out how to make the different sensor fit and wiring it up - it seems that the problem is not with your work. I've said it before and will repeat - you have learned SO MUCH. At first you just stood back while others worked on things and now you're not afraid to get in there and try. I am in awe at the growth - it showed in the little house repair in Florida, in your cabinet building, in your stuff today and so many more. When people explain things to you, you understand it on an entirely different level. Good stuff. Please note that I always recognized your intelligence but some folks just do not understand mechanical things or how things go together - it's just not in them to process it in a meaningful way. You, on the other hand, have picked it up, grabbed the tools and gotten to work. Knowing when to ask for help is part of understanding how stuff works. Rock on.
Seven, I am amazed at the growth you have shown over the years in tackling these projects and how much you have learned so you can tackle these projects!
Well hello 7 alls good i see the fuel filter is a dodge/fliner water separater it is mounted on the frame by the tank. The hole is for the water sensor and drain. You can get a filter which doesn't have the hole and just a drain. The sm one is common 5.9 filter that is the one for your engine.
Now the gauge is shot. If the sender was not working it should still go back to 0 when key on. You can play with this till i get down there lol but i would get a gauge any gauge from auto parts store 2" to fit your hole in dash and get the matching sensor. Or like someone said get VDO. gauge and use the old senser if you scared get a new VDO gauge and sender that should fix it up.
Now if you go under the truck i think it is by the left step the first fuel filter is there. There should be 2 fuel filters on it. Any questions let me know. By the way you doing a awesome job buddy 👍👍🇨🇦🛠️🛠️
What Badge said! Hope all is well, Stay Safe and have Fun
Hmmm....... IDK .....Never trust a mechanic with clean hands ......
I think the first step is to test before one buys parts. If you don't, you end up spending a bunch of money only then to find a broken or shorted wire.
I wish I would’ve seen this when you posted it I would’ve helped you out! Pretty knowledgeable on these engines
THERE YOU ARE! ! ! Glad you're SAFE!
You could install a universal oil pressure gauge. There's no electronics, just a very small diameter copper tube that runs from the gauge to the engine. They are very reliable. If you haven't already done so, I believe that I would change all of the fluids such as differential oil, trans oil, power steering fluid, etc. The old fluids deteriorate over time and can lead to damaged components.
Agree, buy a universal gauge it should come with a 1/4" npt fitting and a coil of copper feed line. Tricky to connect if you haven't done one before but probably plenty of youtube videos on it.
Seven it is great to see you again I should apologize to you it has been a while since I've seen your videos. I had some heart surgery and just haven't been up and about much. It is always good and interesting to see your videos I hope you're doing well be safe my friend.
Seven good to see you. On the parts, different vehicles different years equals different parts.
Hello Seven, it is good to see you. As far as the oil pressure sensor issue goes, I’m thinking that it’s a faulty gauge, but I, too, am an amateur. I hope that you can find one relatively easily, at a low cost.
Looks like a bad gauge. If you had oil pressure issues then it would fluctuate a little or a lot. But there’s no movement at all so I’m thinking it’s a bad gauge. Good to see a new video. Glad your doing good. 🙏🏼
Glad to see your well. Missed your videos. Wish I had some advise but I’m no better than you on this job. Good Luck Ray in Boise
Hello and welcome back. Fellow amateur here with a thought.. If you wired the oil sensor backwards the first time, you could have fried it.. So, even if the second time was wired correctly, the sensor would be shot. Again, I'm also an amateur everything.. Hopefully someone else can chime in on it.
You should invest in a multimeter so you don't have to guess which wire is positive. It's a handy tool to have in your arsenal.
Hey Seven, your best bet is to go to a universal gauge and sending unit, check your voltage at sending unit, and gauge to see if it runs on 12, or 24volt. On filter, my guess is that's a sediment drain hole, and looks like they sent you the wrong filter.
Seven Glad you're doing well...Amazon has a kit you can repair the oil pressure setup with,,Look at waterwich oil pressure gauge kit 0-100 psi on Amazon ,Also any good Napa store should be able to get what you need ,,,Old school Hot Rods use a similar setup that is in your van,,,The set up you have is simple,,,There are universal setups that would work,,,Best Regards
Both filters have a water drain on them to help remove water from the filter between maint. times the amazon filter uses a metal valve whereas the other is plastic one time use drain
If you've wired that sensor both ways and you still have a pegged gauge that tells me the gauge itself is bad, not the sensor.
Hey, welcome back! Long time no see. Glad to see you're doing well.
Seven go to Summit racing search part number ATM- 4327,,you will need to reinstall the old sender you took out,,,you can try the dodge one first but I believe you will have to use the old sender unit,,,Best Regards
Hey Seven. Try tapping around the bezel of the guage with a plastic handle on a screwdriver. Sometimes they just get stuck.
Buy a manual oil pressure gauge, just don’t use the plastic tubing that comes with them. Pick up some same size copper tubing. Then the only wiring needed is for the gauge light.
You could try checking connections on gauge first. I don't know if your van has this but its worth investigating if you've got a wiring diagram it would tell if you have the following. On older vehicles the gauges had a separate regulator so the gauges would not have fluctuating readings as voltage varied from the alternator. I'm not quite sure but on old English 12 volt vehicles it was about 10 volts so when these stopped working gauges would just do what your gauge is doing.
The hole in the bottom of that fuel filter is for a water sensor. It looks exactly like the one I use on my duramax diesel.
Seven, dust those gauges!! I know, I know, I'm OCD. Hope you get your issue sorted out. I'm sure you will - you're very smart.
I'm sure you have this fixed by now but if not, just buy a manual oil guage, Stewart Warner, if you run a copper line instead of plastic run the copper through a couple foot length of vaccum hose so the guage doesn't act as a mini speaker transmitting engine noise through to the guage. Im not big on the plastic line for cold climates, broken line = ruined engine.
Hey 7, good to see you're doing OK. Just a thought. Before you cut wires (you may change your mind) try alligator clips. I got a bag of 10 pair for $7. All different colors with different color wires. I'm talking from experience. I also had short wires and cut them ended spending a full day getting my monkey grips around the wireloom to get to a place where I could splice longer wires and pit the original connector back on. Which I had to purchase cause I cut the bloody wires too close to the connector. Peace my friend.
ATF in fuel also clean and prevent your heater from clogging, tray to buy fuel only in large well know truck stops, there fuel is better and sold faster so there is no condensation and they have better filters on the pumps. See you on the open, Ciao, Tomek
you never said what happened with the diesel heater, is it fixed and what was the fix
I believe he just replaced it.
My money is on the gauge.... It's more than likely stuck in that position. Good luck. Stay well! Oh, I was wanting to ask if not too personal, what is that scar running down the length of your right forearm? Ciao,
Turn the key in and ground each wire. One wire is for the sensor for the gauge and the other is either a ground or for a switch for the light. I suspect it may be the later. If the gauge is working it will move when you ground it's wire. Test each wire and report back to us and we'll advise you how to proceed.
Assuming that the threads are 1/8 NPT, I believe this is the sender that you need. www.summitracing.com/parts/vdo-360009
Are you still planning on a ac install?
Hi there, does anyone know if it’d be wise to put a roof storage box and a roof deck on top of a fiberglass roof of a step van?
Yo - 7 . good to see you again . best source for cummins parts (and advice) is Geno's Garage . google for
web and ask for paper catalog. ive used them 10 or15 years . always good.
The hole in the Amazon filter is for a water in fuel sensor. This sensor also has a small drain valve on it. Definitely a gauge problem.
Based on my many years of experience, I would definitely call Badge.
Something else you might consider on oil gauge, is going to a mechanical gauge, and end this burning out delima you seem to be having, but before you do, contact a Grummin, or whoever made your stepvan, and make sure it does not have a low oil pressure shutoff circuit, that stops you from running motor, if no pressure is detected, in your video you said it didn't have this circuit, direct connect, if so, I'd go mechanical gauge, only thing that can burn out is the bulb, just be careful routing line away from exhaust, pinch points, and moving engine parts. On an old van I had, It had an idiot light, so I installed a T fitting on block, hooked mechanical oil line to it,, and screwed idiot sending unit into it too for twice the protection.. If you go with mechanical gauge, you'll still need correct voltage to illuminate gauge.
After googling that looks like a VDO pressure sender. Is there any markings on the contacts? WK or G? WK goes to warning light and G to gauge. WK is on/off type signal to ground and G is resistive. When motor is off resistance from G to ground should be 10-240 ohms (depending the sensor) and WK is connected to ground when motor is off (or there is no pressure).
If I am right and that is VDO you can check gauge by connecting that wire marked G to ground via 300-500ohm resistor and warning light by connecting that other wire to ground. Warning I am not professional mechanic!
vdo-gauges dot com is their website.

This is awkward to watch. I thought I was the only one to have problems like this! A simple repair that should take 10 mins takes two weeks....and costs 4x as much!
I'm guessing you checked the integrity of the wire connections to the gauge.
It needs to be done before installing a new gauge for sure. But I still believe the gauge is bad. It pegging max and staying there kinda tells the story. I assume Seven has done some wire checking. If not he too soon forgets he has had dash wiring trouble in the past.
If you're looking for books - I do recommend any book by Eric Newby, he started with "The Last Great Grain Race" on a 4-master windjammer "Moshulu" and ends up just about everywhere else as travel editor with "The Observer", fine British humor and a fine eye for the traveler's ways... Blue Skies ;)
idea for a show … steps once you found step van... buy, moving it, insurance, reg, etc … from start to full rv change... what should you know so you don't break the laws and what to be ready for... I just got a step van and just wish there was more info on this in the you tube world....just a idea
WHAT HAPPENED with your diesel HEATER???
Just a thought, maybe you could get a replacement oil pressure gauge from a junk yard if there is one in the area. Like i said just a thought.
Or maybe Ebay.
Seven, do a search on eBay for analog oil pressure gauge,,,should come up,,,you will need to use the old sensor you removed,,,Best Regards
check wires on dash oil guage, may be loose only.
Didn’t that happen a couple years ago? I thought I vaguely remember but maybe it was something else! How are you holding up. Are you still making tea? I can’t keep up you’re a busy guy!
I think that Badge can explain everything.....STA
What are you talking about? A beginner? Anyone on the road in a Step Van as long as you are expert for the fact that you always get it figured out.
The filter you bought off Amazon is like one of the ones on my truck. The big hole on the bottom fits the water in fuel sensor. As for the gauge, it may be difficult but try and trace the wires back and make sure nothing is rubbed through. It sounds like a short to ground. An alternative is to just run a couple new wires.
The first filter is for a water sensor to screw in the bottom.
Call Badge!? 😀❤️🙏✌🏽
I think it is just a drain plug and likely for a different motor size
Glad you're OK, miss your videos
hello, project # 1 wasn't really accomplished, very important hint, you supposed to put little bit motor oil for lowering friction of rubber gasket, better sealing and preventing from sucking air to fuel pomp and injectors, next time is good idea to fill the fuel filter with any ATF to clean, lubricate and burn shit out of engine and clean injectors, I put in all my diesels ( sail boat Perkins, my tractor trailer 460 diesel, 99 Grumman p36) one quart of ATF every 50 gallons of fuel, runs better, quieter and better fuel millage, I learn this in my diesel engineering school in Stuttgart in 70s , gooood luck 7 Auf Wiedershen
Go to cummins filtration it can cross the filter
The hole is for a drain plug
Hi it Tom from Weatherford TX I am trying to by a Step Van but I can,t fine one can you help me out with sum place I can look for them Please and I like to fine one like you did I have been on ebay nut no luck and looking for one is hard to fine and if you can help me I would be happy
Forget E-Bay. You need to test drive it in person. Check Facebook Market place , Craigslist, TruckTrader or drive around industrial areas to see where the dealers are, ask them where to buy decent used ones.
Looks like your gauge is pinned on the high pin and may be shot. Should return to zero when engine is shut off.
you can buy a new after market oil pressure gauge for $23 amazon Bosch SP0F000052 Style Line 2" Mechanical Oil Pressure Gauge
In this older episode th-cam.com/video/fMd9Mjz_BbQ/w-d-xo.html Did you ever find out what those water pipes were used for in that van? Have any idea what the van had been used for previous to you?
why would you ask a bunch of internet amateurs and not call a professional, like your friend Badge.
He did he just getting some more imput lol
K K - never trust a mechanic with clean hands 🤣
Tap the guage its probably stuck
So, I started to give an opinion, then saw Badge has already popped in.
thats easy, a standard vdo sensor 0 to 80 psi will do the trick, thats what was installed also. you can go with the cheapies or this one. www.ebay.com/itm/Oil-pressure-sender-VDO-Genuine-362-001-0-80-psi-10-180-ohms-isolated-ground/272298933012?epid=22017014397&hash=item3f6647fb14:g:OnsAAOSw1VRZk0LS
just seen badges reply, he is right, your gage is dead. it should do at least something upon turning on ignition.
Fuel filters on gasoline cars need replacement at 30,000 miles. Or even less frequently.
I doubt your fuel filter needs to be replaced every time you change the oil. You are spending time and money needlessly.
