Awesome job. I'm born and raised in the Barstow area. I had a general idea of the area the movie was filmed in but you pin pointed the exact scene locations. The Hills Have Eyes has always been one of my favorite movies. I had a conversation with Michael Berryman one time at a Horror Con. After the filming of the movie he lived in Lucerne Valley, which is a neighboring town to Apple Valley. He said he lived there for several years and sold firewood.
I've seen the remake, but the original has been on my to-watch list for YEARS. Saw this video, realized I can't watch it without having seen the movie, pulled up Shudder and experienced some classic horror! It's about time because I'm a huge Craven fan and you just don't get this horror feel anymore. Thanks for helping me watch movies I should've watched LOOONG ago! Thanks also for finding the real location and making history for horror fans everywhere!
I work at that quarry in the first spot and never had any idea. It’s a shame how bad that area has gotten. I wish I would have seen this video earlier, Im 99% positive I know where the mutant cave location was filmed. Awesome video. Thanks

I was out that way back in 2006 actually, and was around Fairview Mountain, but didn't know I was standing in the same general area from the movie. My wife and I were hiking the mountain itself, man those rocks are brutal on sneakers. Thanks for all the hard work you put in finding the exact spots. YOU GUYS ROCK!!!
Very cool!... I live in Victorville, just a few miles from here. I happen to know where the famous gas station location is... AND the funny looking fireplace/chimney on the gas station property. The gas station building is gone now, but the fireplace/chimney still stands untouched to this day. I live just a few miles from here as well.

Michael Berryman mentioned on the commentary track on the Blu Ray that it was on Pearblossom Highway, but coudon't find it on Google Maps, the fireplace anyway. How do you get to the exact spot? I would like to take a photo of it from a distance. Thanks.
Wes Craven was in part inspired by an episode that happened to him while taking a motorcycle trip with his wife. When they stopped in a small Nevada town, a trio of locals shot an arrow past his head and insulted him. When Craven threatened to sue them, they replied they could easily kill him, leave his corpse in a nearby salt mine, and no one would ever know. I love movie trivia! AWESOME JOB! I would pin a flippin medal on you if you were here (I always wondered exactly where as well). This film (1977 Original) is in my top three horror / scary movies of all time. I saw it as a kid and it scared me to no end. NOTE: ***You came across a flippin rabbit in the same location Pluto did as he thought it was what he was hearing and smelling just before Beast got him!!!! You overlooked that aspect.... What icing on the cake for your trip there (and to get on camera) !!! Perhaps it was the same rabbit as was in the film? (ha-ha).
Wow, its so isolated out there in the desert ! . The night time must be terrifying ! I saw the movie on VHS when I was 8 years old. The cannibal clan frightened me to death. The Pluto and Mars attack on the Carter women in the RV sequence is so disturbing.
Love the WARNING in your description. Sounds just like it's a warning from Grandpa Fred. "Now why in the HELL would you want to drive out there anyhow???"
Those are known as the Justice Rocks. We went off roading and riding up to them back in June. You forgot to mention the new Walmart Distribution Center and all the new "farms" by the lake bed. Yes, that kind of farm
Now that's been said; I'd just like to point out that, regarding the film, the argument has been made that the family are NOT exactly savages by the end, since they are mostly just defending themselves. But rather, by that point, they are brought down to the SAME LEVEL as the savages, which is still a significant distinction. But either way, that doesn't change how frightening the film was/still is. Anyway, love the videos! Keep 'em coming!

Scared me to the point that I didn't want to take any trips into the desert alone. 🙂 I was working for the California Conservation Corps at the time and a lot of us went to see it. I've never forgotten the film. When the remake came out, I thought I'd give it a chance and see if it would have the same effect on me, it didn't. I still find the original scary, though I don't have a problem going into the desert alone. 🙂
