    Okaaaaay,..... after reviewing this interview, I see that I didn't mention (or, if I did, it was edited for time) my thoughts regarding why there are two different-looking "Ambassador" Designs - so here we go:
    The 'actual' look for the Ambassador Class Enterprise-C - is the one I originally Designed - the one that was correctly placed in the Conference Lounge ship sculpture group.
    BUT - When the Enterprise-D entered that temporal vortex, timelines shifted, producing a different Ambassador Design - which has been incorrectly excepted as the canon version of that ship.
    This explanation is verified by the fact that, when the vortex was entered, Picard's Enterprise uniforms were changed, his bridge design was changed, and the design for the Enterprise-C was also changed,... and all these changes were accepted by those within that alternate timeline as being normal (or canon, to them). So, you see,... the screen-version of the Enterprise-C is no more valid in today's timeline, than the screen-version of Picard's bridge, while it was also in that alternate timeline. In other words - the Enterprise-D bridge and the Enterprise-C exterior are both products of an alternate timeline - unrecognized, as such, while existing in that timeline.
    If, however, the Enterprise-D encountered any other Ambassador Class Starship (not being able to encounter the "C", due to it's destruction) in our normal unaltered time - it would look like it is supposed to,... like it does in the wall sculpture-
    I hope that helps,
    Andrew-

      (if I do understand what you say or if I missed the point I'm sorry, I can barely see at the moment)
      That kinda helps...but in my honest opinion how would you explain Rick Sternbach's Ambassador class ships existing after The Next Generation's Yesterday's Enterprise episode?
      example; Deep Space Nine episode 1/pilot Emissary, battle at Wolf 359. In those beginning scenes we see R.S's Ambassador ships fighting the Borg cube, and possibly somewhere later during Deep Space Nine's run time(seasons).

      +Captain Lokiawa Well,.... that one, I can't explain.

      +Andrew Probert What IF, your version of the Ambassador class is actually a refit version? A rather extensive and expensive version which is seldom seen (like the Lakota and Enterprise B version of the Excelsior). Maybe the interior designer of the Enterprise D was neither a Starfleet officer nor historian and did a rather sloppy image search when he did the decorations. "Hmmmm, I like this one better, let's do this version" :p

    • @XTINFILM
      @XTINFILM 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Andrew Probert I like this explanation and I think it's fully supported by the Abrams films, and the mirror universe episode of DS9 where the Negh'Var is a few times larger than in the prime universe (which itself may provide some justification for J.J.'s supersized Constitution class).
      The ships are simply a little (or a lot) different between timelines.
      As for why the Sternbach Ambassador showed up in DS9 at Wolf 359, we should chalk it up to a limitation in the effects technology of the time. For example, if Voyager had been made with physical models, they would have used the O'berth model for the Equinox, instead of creating the Nova class. So we could work our way back and conclude many of the ships shown in TNG and DS9 weren't actually the types shown. The Sternbach Ambassador should be "read" as the Probert Ambassador, and all the Miranda and Excelsior class ships we saw in DS9's fleet battles should be read as newer types as well
      I gather from this interview that you don't see Federation starships as "just spaceframes" that are infinitely upgradeable with new electronics, an opinion I share. I compare it to the evolution of the AT computer case to the ATX case. Eventually the electronics change too much to fit into the same space as the old electronics - they need more power, more cooling etc. You're much better off designing a new chassis that gives the electronics what they need than you are trying to make the old chassis work. So I really don't believe the Federation was fighting the Dominion with TOS-movie era ships like the Miranda class. The effects department was using the models they had to work with and would have done better if they could have.
      It'd be great if Paramount would invest in updating the effects shots of TNG and DS9 and fix these problems. Or let the fans do it - I'm sure that we could.

    • @TheMikeX74

      Bobby3OOO No. they decided to go with a Rick Sternbach design for the canon Ambassador-class instead. This design is so much better.

      If Ricks ambassador enterprise-c was at nerindra 3 that ship would kick romulan butt.

    • @jamie514
      @jamie514 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      they still could: the ship that was revealed at the Narendra battle in Yesterdays Enterprise was in AN ALTERNATE TIMELINE. Uniforms were not the same. Lives totally altered. Tasha undead.
      No reason to believe the real historical C in the prime timeline doesnt look exactly like the Probert design :)

    • @Code_Lin
      @Code_Lin 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      This ship is in star trek online, it's classified as a narendra class.
      So the design wasn't put to waste.

  • @AndrewProbert

    Okay, everybody,... I have the ultimate explanation for this confusion between Rick's "C" and mine.
    Rick's Enterprise-C is NOT an Ambassador Class ship. Now, maybe, somewhere, it's 'printed' that it is - but, for all those who embrace the interpretation of "canon" as being what is seen (or heard) on screen... the Enterprise-C, as seen in the episode: "Yesterday's Enterprise" - was never referred to an an Ambassador Class vessel.
    I, therefore, submit that the time-rift Enterprise-C is another class of ship. That explains why that same class is seen in a subsequent episode. The Enterprise-C, in our existing timeline, however, IS the Ambassador Class ship (as displayed on the Lounge wall) but, being a very large Universe,... is never encountered in any of the episodes of Next Generation.
    Yes, obviously, since my Enterprise-C is an Ambassador Class ship,... Everyone assumed any ship with the designation of Enterprise-C would automatically be an Ambassador Class vessel.
    But the time-rift altered that-

      +Andrew Probert - Problem is, Sternbach's Ambassador/Enterprise-C is clearly visible on the Enterprise-E's lounge wall in First Contact. We get a good look at it when Picard smashes the display glass.

    • @calumknight9178
      @calumknight9178 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +JR XTIN I never consider the movies 100% canon considering it's different companies that handle the movies vs the tv series . Tv series first and foremost (considering that is where it started), movies second but expect mistakes due to different production studios

    • @XTINFILM
      @XTINFILM 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Calum Knight This is getting too convoluted for me. I'm a ship geek and I prefer Probert's version of the Ambassador, but as for what's canon I think it's pretty clear Paramount resolved the disparity by retconning out the Probert Ambassador. It isn't sane to come up with an overly-involved theory for why the Sternbach Ambassador isn't the Ambassador class, when it's appeared as the Ambassador class in every production appearance of the class, except for one wall decoration on the D. Even if I ran Paramount and I wanted to make a TV series based on the Enterprise C, I wouldn't use the Probert Ambassador at this point (but I would if Sternbach's Ambassador had never appeared). I'd go to Sternbach and say, o.k., the budget and time aren't a big issue, fix the problems with your version and make it right. Let's not make this continuity problem any worse than it already is.

  • @codedlogic
    @codedlogic 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    My jaw is on the floor. The D has always been my favorite looking ship in star trek. And I think this version of the Ambassador class is even more gorgeous. Would love to see a show with one of these. Solar system of the week - warp to a new location - saucer separate - the A story could be on the star drive and the B story on the saucer (or vice versa).

    Always liked Andy's concept of the C over the one we see in "Yesterday's Enterprise". HIs seems to be more of a fluent progression. Great episodes and animations! Thanks Mr.Probert and Trekyards for another great episode.

      @jmwoods190 ปีที่แล้ว

      I very much agree with you, though I'd also combine L-shaped nacelle pylons of Sternbach's design(also on the Excelsior & Galaxy classes) to the rest of the Probert version so the progression is even more fluent.

    A very elegant and well thought out design. I sympathise with the modelers and PM's for a series that have to design and make a 'ship of the week' for a series as time pressures mean short cuts get made.. This design shows that with thought as to function and additional time to think and refine what a fantastic design can emerge.

Your work has inspired me since I was a kid. The refit Enterprise is one of my favorite ship's of all time. I was pleasantly surprised to find out recently that my favourite convoy ships from Battlestar Galactica 1978 was was actually designed by yourself...Boy I'm a such geek. Anyway, I've always been disappointed with the 1701C that appeared in Yesterday's Enterprise; and it's great to have a chance to see the 'original' design.

I came here to become better informed on the ship that we use in our stories and am not disappointed at all. As stated above, The U.S.S. Boston is officially docked at ESD. The docked ships list is on the display in Admiral Quinn's office to the right.

    I'm not a fan of this ship's top view, but she does have some absolutely beautiful angles and looks great in motion. Especially love the neck and deflector and the flowing shape of the engine pylons as seen from the front.
    My nitpick, as it is, is that she's maybe too direct an in-between of the B and D in terms of proportions, where the other ships in the Enterprise line always bring entirely new shapes and design elements.
    Always such a pleasure to hear Mr. Probert talk about his work, either way. The amount and quality of thought he puts into designs is inspiring.

    graceful design :) I love the stepping from the motion picture enterprise to the Next generation enterprise the detail's from the old box style navigation array for example to the organics of the new body frame.

    Wow, that ship looks amazing!
    Much better looking than the C we got in TNG.
    Would love to see a series, but more in the line of TNG, DS9 and Voyager, which would have this version of the Enterprise venturing through space. As I was disappointed with Discovery and gave up all hope for that it.
    Damn you Abrams for ruining my Star Trekking. x'(

    You know I wasn't sure about this design, because I love the Ambassador- but by the end of the episode, I'm sold. You know we live in amazing Trek times when we can have essentially 'fan' (non-canon) designs but designed by The People. It's got me thinking that I've love to see a Galaxy modernization. I don't mean re-design, but looking at the care and attention spent on the upper saucer section of this ship- which is one of the best designed of all Trek I'd like to see some of this applied to the Galaxy in an ultra-detailed version

    Andrew, I have to say this is one of my favorite ships in Star Trek ever. It's such a thoughtfully laid out vessel, and Tobias Richter did such an amazing job of fleshing it out in 3D. Absolutely gorgeous vessel, and it is a crime that we never got to see your Ambassador design flying alongside the Enterprise D. If I recall, there is a fan movie being made featuring your design of the Ambassador-class, so I'll hold off from also stating it being a crime that we'll never see this ship as a feature vessel.
    I'll end this with a fanboy request. :) With the E and the F Enterprises established in canon, would you consider designing a G or H?

    I would love this as the canon Ambassador class! The detail that Mr. Probert infused into this concept and its execution by Mr. Richter are simply fantastic. And that warp capable, detachable dorsal lifeboat is a great idea! It would be cool to see it in action.

    Another brilliant and informative episode & what a marvelous design for a Starship.
    I feel it fits in a lot better with a federation timeline then the one they actually did used & it was marvelous seeing it in the Star Trek ships of the line calendar.
    I just wish Eaglemoss would do a model of it for our own collections so we could have both Enterprise cease.
