- TATTOOING MYSELF FOR THE FIRST TIME (MY 1ST TATTOO)
TATTOOING WITH JAY D EP.4
In EPISODE 4 of TATTOOING WITH JAY D, I endure the one thing I had been dreading for ages... Time to tattoo myself!! Trying to build a career in tattooing, it only felt right that I know how it feels to get tattooed. My 2nd ever real skin had to be myself!
No more DAY IN THE LIFE of JAY D I'm afraid! This one is strictly RAW TATTOOING from START TO FINISH!

As always... A HUGE THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO COMMENTS, LIKES, SUBSCRIBES AND SHARES! It means a lot to me and this channel wouldn't go anywhere without you! :)
I'm a self taught artist who has resorted to tattooing themselves many times in order to learn...here's just a couple of tips (apologies if you've read them elsewhere)...use A&D ointment on the skin to help the needle glide. It helps a bunch, especially for lining. Next...(this applies especially when doing realism)...always work from bottom to top..or top to bottom depending on what part of the tattoo is closest to you...imagine that you're a printer. It means that you won't lose your stencil and you can concentrate on every individual element piece by piece. Cool content!
Those are some great tips !
Self taught tattoo artist caswell, and the biggest thing that made me panic was how many times he wiped ink towards the center of the tattoo 🤣🤣🤣. Always wipe ink away from the stencil to preserve it
i use vaseline as ointment, would you say that A&D works better ? then im going to invest in that ofc ! (i just started tattooing so i can use all the advice !!)
Qwertyuioopasdfghjklzxcvbnm 1234567890
How do you guage the amount of pressure to use??
To anyone reading this who's new to tattooing.. tattooing yourself is no joke.. it's hurts more and takes a lot of mental stability to hurt yourself and concentrate on hurting yourself.. it's well worth it for practice but no joke..
In my apprenticeship i was my own canvas and yes it dose hurts lol
it hurts, but not like getting one done by anyone else. You control the pain, so if it hurts you stop and go stop and go etc. thats alot more lenient than having someone just gliding a whole line.
@@corpusadenums512for me it’s easier to suck it up when I have to say the words “i quit” out loud. My pride only let me talk out once. I just turn it over to somebody else and try to distract myself with talking to the artist of being on my phone. I’m about to do a big one on my thigh. It’s also going to be my first experience with numbing cream. Fingers crossed
I think it hurts less but I think thighs don’t hurt
Honestly very impressed with the shading excited to see some more tattoos
Thanks mate! 😎
I’ve tattooed both my shins (right starwars) (left witchy stuff) my ankles and forearm and I absolutely love tattooing myself, I was super shaky the first time but a good meal before hand helps and a drink
ohhhh I should have read your comment 3 days ago before I butchered my first tatoo 😂
Hats down to you man, fearless.
I felt so sorry when I saw you shaking. I know the feeling all too well, It sucks. But you did good.
Thanks Mario!! I wish I was fearless but the fear was pretty real! LOL
Just 🚬 a J n youll be fine. ✋ ShAking!! 🍕🍔💪🍻🍻🍻🤘
I got a little laugh out of it
I am also a self taught artist that started tattooing myself in 10th grade and that was 21 years ago. I now have over 150 tats on myself and have did another 3 or 4 thousand on other people. Just a few tips from me, try to line your stencil up a little better depending on where you want it and start from either end and work the opposite direction just so you don't lose your stencil from wiping. Also the nerves will definitely go away. It's almost like drawing for me now. The new tattoo pens are the way to go. I have 7 other machines but the tattoo pens are so quiet and comfortable in my hand. A&D ointment is the best for healing but only a thin layer. Never tattoo anyone unless you have a few under your belt and are comfortable with machine and not shaking. All love and like the video.
Thanks very much for your comment! 😁😎
Proper good job there bro I shook loads when I did my own tattoo 😂
Thanks bro! 🤙 haha, it's a nightmare isn't it! I wish there was an off switch lol
First time is the worse, the it gets relatively easy
Fold up some paper towel. Wrap it around your grip to give it a wider grip n hold it on with a few rubber bands. That’ll help a bit with the shaking.
came out really good, i hope when start doing mine they turn out as good as this
Ahahah man this just reminded me when I gave myself my first ones! Magical moments
Yes brotha get it. That’s right. Self tattooing 👍
It's a weird experience but I love it
The best 1st time YT tattoo I've seen yet.
Thanks so much!
Ur shaky lines actually look good. I love it! Great job!
That is ridiculously good for your first tattoo. Makes me want to finish my own sleeve lol !!but there’s no way it’d turn out half as good. Looks like you got your self a side hustle there bub ! 🤘
Thanks Patrick! I did have lots of practice with tattoo machines before attempting real skin. In fact this was my 2nd real skin tattoo, my first one was on my mum lol (in a previous video). This video here was "my first tattoo" as in... I'd never had a tattoo before! Don't worry, alot of people have been confused by the title haha. This was why I was so nervous because I didnt know how id cope. Thanks for your comment! :)
My tatt has healed brilliant, can't believe you did this to yourself x
I'm about to tattoo myself in a few days, i'm working on sketching/designing it now!
That's awesome! what is it you're tattooing?
I'm tattooing myself again tomorrow. Expect another video real soon! ;) Good luck with yours!
Same lol im waiting for my mast archer machine to be delivered. Stencil paper, stencil stuff and needles came in today. As soon as it gets here im goin in lol.
@@phoeveezy6398 best of luck!! 🤙😎
That’s pretty good for his first tattoo and doing it himself I have some tattoos I’m not artistic but even if I was I don’t think I’d be able to do it myself... fuck yea
Did my first couple tattoos on myself with a couple different rotary machines I made in my welding shop. Welded frames and down tubes with grips made from washers. Honed guitar strings for needles apoxied to straightened paperclip. And homemade black carbon ink from a clothespin.
Wow fair play! That would have made for a good youtube video!
Great tattoo brother 💯 ive done a few stick n pokes on myself and i just got full pro tattoo kit with practice skin but my lines are all over 😷✌ thanks for sharing your videos 👊
Love it mate cabt wait to see more i just git my kit rewdy to start tattooing agqin did a few 15 years ago
dude you did suchhhh a good fucking job!!! best video ive ever watched on tattooing oneself. so yeah super encouraging im totally going ahead w my own tat. thanksssssss
Wow thanks dude! Thats awesome :) Good luck with the tat!
Good tip, don’t use numbing cream, when it wears off the pain is worse than what it would be without numbing cream
Really? I did not know that, thanks! I have already decided not to numb next time as I've heard its easier to damage the skin by mistake due to not feeling it
I’ve been tattooing on myself for about 5 months now, this inspires me to document my journey as well! Great video, best wishes. TATT TATT TATT IT UP!!!!
Fair play dude. Keep it up 🤘 thanks so much for your comment 🙏🤙
Yeah I did but I used a 14 round shader needle and It didn't come out bad but I do have to say I had to push alot harder then I realized. I do think that is cause I used such a big needle grouping. I have done a crap load on fake skin but it's not the same at all.
It came out amazing! I bought a tattoo gun because me & my sister love tattoos but we wanted to do them ourselves & I tattooed her & I was shaky at first as well. I need to practice more but I’m so nervous to do one on myself. But you did an amazing job!
Thanks Rebecca! 😊 Practice skins are a great way to practice and build confidence 👌
Oh and merry Xmas!
just saw this one as I am just starting to learn tattooing and decided to search for self tattoing vid. Yours looks awesome for your first actual skin! I hope I can be that good when it's my time
Thanks so much. Good luck hope it goes well!
@@JayDArtworks I'm really hoping lol I can't make up my mind of what to tattoo on my thigh
I feel his pain. I know exactly what he’s going through when I first started myself, but once you get confident.👍👍
@@luisflores2184 thanks. I've been tattooing just over 3 years now so feeling way more confident. Should really tattoo myself again soon!
That's a decent job you did there!! How you had the courage to do it fair play.. Tattooist in the making 💯 Look forward to mine 😬
Thanks Ellie!! 😁🙌 soon come 😜
Great job! I like those pens.
Great Job Jay. What a super talent you have. Good luck .. I have no doubt you will make a total success of this. .. I might even be tempted myself 😉
Thanks so much Sarah, means alot! 😊 Of course id love too. Maybe something dog orientated 😉
Jay D Artworks Absolutely. I already have a rainbow and memorial paw print on my wrist. I’d love to add a feather.. 🐾 !
@@sarahross1394 I knew I'd seen a paw somewhere! It's been so long since we've seen each other 🙈
That would be great! I'll get a few practices in and then we'll sort it out 😊 thanks again!
Like ur style man. Its brave AF to do ur first tattoo on urself. Big up. I subbed and liked.
Thanks Pat 🙏😊
Balls of steel. Looks great your gonna be big.
Thanks for the kind comment dude! I hope to be big one day for sure 🤘
I shook a lot when I first tried tattooing too......your shading is impressive I’m trying to get my shading down still , good job great first tattoo
LOL!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣 its the ink splatter on the carpet for me!!!!!! Ahhhhhhh crying laughing so hard! Good for you mate! Keep trying you'll get there eventually LMFAO
That's good for your first tattoo, How did it heal up ?
Thanks! It's healed really well thanks 👌 nothing fell out so I definatley went deep enough lol
I had the shakes the first time I tattooed myself too. You did a good job 👍🏻
Thanks dude appreciate it 🤙
I’ve done multiple tattoos on myself hardest part I did mine was my shin. Didn’t hurt at all just hard to get to placement wise
Fair play. Yea I bet that makes your back ache after a while! 😣
That experience is very real
Very! 👍
Now you've done it once and you know what to expect, next time you embrace the pain. I don't know if it's just me but packing in colour and shading is always less painful I find. Great job though, well done!
Thanks for your comment ✌️ check out my channel and you may find a much newer self tattoo video 😉 and that’s funny because I’m completely the opposite, line work for me is the painless part haha!
Well my thighs are a mess😬😂 but that's how i learned mostly. I can totally relate to shaking. Tattooing on myself also helps to understand how my tattoos are healing. Good content!
Wow this was sick!! Iv just ordered the whole setup of tattooing. Quit nervous myself
Thanks! 😎 That's sick. The main this is to have fun with it. Enjoy your new kit!
Good job mate it gives me inspiration to get my tattoos on the go I am also a Artist Designer Sailor Captain cheers
Thanks dude
This was awesome content!! Excited to go binge your videos. Great job!!
Thanks! 🙌😁
I'm definitely motivated watching this ... I'm definitely going to try, I do nails and I can draw but I got me a kit and been practicing...so I'm trying my thigh tatto thank you for this video!!! 🎉you motivated me... I just need some numbing cream lol
That's awesome! So glad I could motivate you to take the plunge 😎 good luck! From experience, I'd say if you can do it without the numb cream, try it. It's helps to distinguish the correct depth. But there's no shame to numb if you feel the need either 👍
That shading looks amazing especially since you’re doin it on yourself! I’m learning how to tattoo rn and shading is the worst part when I practice on myself usually have too do it in parts tho that’s also probably because of some of the places I’ve picked lol
i swear this has to be the best way to learn tattooing the quickest...i mean at some point the mind seem to take control to the outcome of what is being done and as a result all the stuff happening to the pain receptors and automatically really speed up the whole process and made it less hard and stop the self infliction lol...
You're exactly right! The only way is to do it enough that you get used to it I guess lol
Dude the tattoo looks really good
@@izzyc3141 thanks 🙌😁
Hello mate I in bristol also just bought a gun intending to do something but don't have the stencil stuff to get it on your skin is there anything else you can use or does it have to be the proper stuff? To make it stick to your skin.. fair play continuing shaking that much I would bottle it looking really good so far .Cindy
@@CindyDobson-i5x hey, ah wicked hope you have fun with it! Umm, I've always used proper transfer gel so I've not tried anything else. I hear deodorant sticks can do the job, prison style haha. The transfer get can be found pretty cheap on amazon, but you get what you pay for, the more expensive the better it will work. Hope that helps!
That looks mint even it was it first attempt
Sick dude. Respect!
@@deltahogzz thanks mate 🤟
Oh my gooood i feel sso much better that i am not the only one with a shaking hand =)))))))) i was so nervous when i started to tattoo myself, and my hand was so crazy shaking. Thank you for posting this
Your not alone. I still shook for my 2nd one too! No where near as much tho. Have you seen the new self tattoo upload? The nerves do go away
It took me a min to get over the shakes, gettin comfotable usually helps me
I’ve done roughly 2 and a half on myself lmao my leg hurt so bad I decided to come back to it but I’m starting a new one today ! Been practicing for about a month now gonna do some real canvases this weekend I know I’ll be great
Like the prep u did with keeping ur table and machine wrapped up, gloved up, but i think you forgot about your carpeted floors. Hehe.
One tip for shaking hands, get a grip tape to make it fatter and easier on ur hands to hold the machine. Can fold a napkin under it and wrap it up with the tape. Helps wonders.
Nice first self tattoo. Keep it up!
gave my self my first tattoo the other day and i was the shaking like hell just like you were at the beginning lol i was laughing pretty good! nerves went away after few lines
It's hard when you've never felt what uts like to have a tattoo done, let alone on yourself! Lol. Nerves got the better of me at the beginning too
How did you guage the right of pressure to use bruh?
@@StromLxrd6 I got the right depth by visually looking at how deep I go and also the feeling in the machine and the sound of the machine in my hand when I get to the right depth. The 2nd time I tattoo myself I didn't use numbing cream so I also feel the depth too
@@JayDArtworks ok bet thank you for sharing that wisdom 🤙🏿
@@StromLxrd6 no problem dude
This was soo good! Illustration student looking to start tattooing here.. what equipment did you use.. gun, ink, etc? and where can i buy?
Thanks 😊 if you check out my latest upload all of my equipment is listed in the video. The ink I use is fusion power black, that's the only thing I didn't mention. All bought from killerink and magnum tattoo supplies
Super good first tat in my opinion! I just got my equipment and have been practicing on fake skin and eventually will tattoo myself, but what voltage did you run at? Thanks for the video :D
Thanks 🤙 When I say (my first tattoo) it means id never had any tattoos before. It was my 2nd time tattooing real skin. First one was my mum (there's a vid on my channel of this)
Tbh it was so long ago, but from memory it was about 8v for lining and 7v for shading. (I'm not the fastest yet so I run slightly low to match my hand speed
Looks great, cant wait to see more
Iff you would like to practice tattooing I would be quite happy to let you your obviously seriously talented piece and love from 1 leg UK England
BAD ASS YOUR AWESOME brave man.
Hi I've done lots on myself over the years to learn. It's really hard to tattoo upside down! It also hurts!!!!! I've ruined key parts of my body and regret it. All needs blacking out now lol black out tattoos look good.
You are talented, it turned out awesome, nice shading.
What machine are you using????
Thanks dude! We all gotta learn somehow, and now you get to learn how to black out large areas 😜🤣
I use the Spektra xion by FK Irons. Awesome machine but I only have a cheap dragonhawk coil machine to compare too (me previous machine)
@@JayDArtworks yes that's where I'm at now. Lol bigger mags!!! The technique isn't easy. Urges to do my face for some reason! 😀
@@fluke808state4 the face! Wow now that would take some balls! Lol
Was this your first time tattooing like a real tattoo i ask because i never used a tattoo machine period but i bought one i can draw but is it easy to use.
No this was my 2nd ever time tattooing but the first time on myself. My first ever tattoo on real skin was on my mum (video on my channel). I done alot of research and practiced on fake skin and pig skin for 7 year before approaching real skin. It's very different to drawing. It's a whole different ball game if I'm honest
Where did you buy the kit?🙂
Magnum tattoo supplies and killer ink for my consumables
I did a 5 hour tattoo on myself and the only part I didn’t enjoy was when I had to use my art skills to draw lines that faded from the stencil being constantly wiped
@@BabyfaceElPreferido yea that can be annoying when that happens. Using good stencil paper and gel can help and also starting the tattoo from the bottom helps too.
Man I just started my tattooing experience this year. It takes practice I don't shake anymore. But I'm way better then I was on my first try. I have tattooed myself more then I should have but no horrible mess ups or botches so far.
Yea man, I'm a year in to tattooing people now. This video no longer reflects what I'm like as a tattoo artist haha. I will probably still shake if I tattooed myself again. It's the nerves lol. I only have X2 tattoos and they're the X2 I've done on myself haha! Tattooing others is much easier
@@JayDArtworks I agree tattooing other people is easier than tattooing myself. It really is nerves but it happens lol
Shake work: 10/10
Nice work brother
Great effort m8 looks good
Even I wasn’t shaking that much when I tattooed myself, holy shit 😂
I was going to do this to myself. But after watching this. I think I will let someone who knows what they are doing, to do this. All though I can paint and draw.
It's not something you can just pick up and do that's for sure! Plus it costs alot of money to invest in all the right equipment. I practiced with tattoo machines for years before attempting this one
yo, went out really crazy bro!! 🔥🔥😎👍🏼
what needle did you used for the lines?
Cheers dude! 😎 From memory it was a 5rl for the linework and a flat 9mag & 14mag for the shading.
actually came out F***ing DOPE!
Thanks dude 🤙
love ur humor
They always say.... tattoo yourself before you tattoo someone else. So I did....now I'm starting to do others. When I did myself, I wasn't shaking but when I did tat my friend, I was shaking.... maybe cause I was nervous and didn't wanna mess up. Good job mate! Carry on.
Fair play mate, I agree it's the right thing to do. And yea that's just nerves, I was the same with my first few clients too. You'll shake the nerves off the more you do. Confidence will build. I found it more nerve racking on myself tbh but I think it was because I'd never had a tattoo before. Thanks mate! And keep it up, I promise your nervous shakes will go away 👍
If you turn the volts down and work much slower, you can still achieve pretty good linework regardless of the shaking. Then up the volts as you build confidence and speed up 👌
Is there anyway I’m able to find this stencil?
I just traced it from google dude. try typing in "skull tattoo design" in google and you might be able to find the same design. Hope that helps!
@@JayDArtworks thank you I appreciate it ima add it too a couple tattoos I have blended
@@corbinbristow6013 good luck mate!
Just literally tattoo'd myself I shook like a leaf in a high wind, I used a 5RL so when I got a bit more confident I went back over and widened and straightened the lines, I think it was Adrenalin for the first 5mins ok after.
Lol glad I'm not alone! Great idea! And I agree I think it's the adrenaline that makes the shakes
Just did a tattoo on myself yesterday it's a black heart on my knee and I shook a little as well not as bad but the end result looks really good props
fair play!! and Thanks :)
Great tattoo with no adhesive wrap
I wrap my machine now a days lol
@@JayDArtworks nice. There u go.I’m actually starting today! First tat on myself. Never tatted before but I’m great at lines etc on a paper. Practice makes perfect
@@Hogib35 awesome good luck bro! Yea man it's all about practice 👌 I've been drawing since I was about 4 years old and spent 6 years tattooing fake skin before touching real skin. Glad to hear you're confident bro, you got this!
@@Hogib35 there's a new video on my channel (tattooing myself round 2) and you can see how much I do differently since this video. It's alot haha
Can you give a link to the tattoo equipment you got? I wanna start tattooing as well, but I'm scared to just by some random gun and it being shit... Also, awesome job, surprised you managed to do such a great job despite the shaky hands, it turned out really well!
Heres a link to the tattoo machine (they actually have a $100 off deal atm!) www.fkirons.com/collections/all-xions-christmas-super-sale
And heres a link to the power supply and foot pedal: www.killerinktattoo.co.uk/critical-cx-2r-power-station-with-wireless-footpedal
Obviously theres a huge list of other things needed but I'd be here all day listing it all lol. So these are the main two for you.
and thanks! :)
Also, as long as your not tattooing people or yourself and you stick to artificial practice skins, a cheap rubbish machine will do the job to give you an idea if it's something you want to really do. I had cheap machines for a good 4 years while I was practicing on fake skin and even done a year and a half with a good machine before doing a real person. Tattooing people should only be done by a professional or someone with alot of experience and confidence with a tattoo machine tbh.
@@JayDArtworks Thanks so much for the response. And don't worry I will definitely not be tattooing real skin for a long while!

the shaky hand is so real
amazing man!!
well done bro, impresive for 1st tattoo also done to yourself is harder, dont mind shaky hands you will soon build confidence and get over it ;)
Thanks dude, appreciate the kind comment 😊🤘
This was actually the 2nd tattoo on real skin (mum was first) but this was my first tattoo I've ever had on my body! I was so nervous haha
@@JayDArtworks keep up brother well done
When started tattooing I was terrified the first time... very shaky so I know the feeling bro you did good tho
Thanks dude. Takes time to build the confidence doesn't it. I'm much more confident now. I should do another tattoo on myself soon
It looks like the needle was out a little too far but fortunately you didn't go too deep. I'm just beginning too and that's pretty damn impressive
I'm beginning tattoo too and that's what I thouht too when I saw the kind of color bleeding in the upper left part. Is it what you refer too ?
Hey quick question. Tattooed myself about a week ago now and its still pretty sore and sensitive, quite scabby in a couple areas. Did I just overwork the skin?
Im sorry but without seeing it i have no idea. it shouldn't be sore after a week, maybe a little itchy but not sore. I would say consult your pharmacist for advice. Hope this helps.
You did a really good job !!
If you feel like you’re shaking too much try using Tattoo grip tape you can get 12 for $6 on Amazon this tattoo looks amazing though
I do now haha. I do many things differently now 👍
Not to bad for just beginning, you did really well on your shading. My biggest thing you should work on is like some of the other comments said, if you're right handed then start from the bottom right and make you way to the top left so the stencil doesn't smear or wipe off during the tattoo. But the biggest thing is that I noticed is when you grabbed the new needles with dirty gloves on, you always want to make sure to take off your used gloves before touching anything outside of you setup so you don't risk the spread of bacteria and diseases especially when working on other people because even if they say they're clean they could be carrying something they don't know about.
Hey Brian I apreciate your comments! This video was recorded some time ago now and your 100% right with everything you've said. All has changed these days buddy! ;)
Please be careful when placing a stencil!! Next time stand while doing it or have the body part in the orientation it’s usually in when placing it. Otherwise when you do stand up when the tattoo is complete it could be distorted. Do this all the time but always be more cautious around the knees and elbows. Hope this makes sense!
Thanks for the advice. Makes perfect sense! If you check out the most recent self tattoo video on my channel you can see how it’s healed and exactly what it looks like when I’m stood up 👍
@@JayDArtworks I saw it!!! I was so glad to see how it turned out, really nice color packing! Can’t wait to see more! :)

Looks pretty good for a 1st self tattoo. Yeah, i'm sure there are flaws but from the self tattoos I've seen recently that's 10 out of 10. As far what you should put on yourself, I say if your looking to become an artist practice what types or art you want to excel in. If you don't plan on doing tattoo's pro then still do what you would like on yourself. Got the joke but they don't rub off. Great Job and GOOD LUCK!!!!
Thanks S4N M4N! That comment has made my day 😁 you're right, there are a couple of small flaws. Toward the end it got more difficult to do as the pain got worse so I was rushing a little. It's much easier on someone else haha.
Thanks for the advice too 👌 if you check out my social media pages, you can see I'm a very versatile artist and I'd like to take this over to my tattooing too. Although I feel black and grey semi realism is my favourite style to tattoo.
