The way comics work is that a character gets assigned to a writer and thats a " volume ". Everything is canon unless its specifically called black label or elseworlds for DC or they say it's another earth in Marvel. The continuity is usually the same but for DC they reboot every few decades there's the og pre-crisis shit, post-crisis, new 52 and now rebirth.
