When I joined the Navy in 1963 my first duty station was Miramar Naval Air Station. I soon discovered Balboa Park and fell in love with it. With my first look at the beautiful Spanish architecture and the majestic eucalyptus trees I knew right away I could never go back to my home in Long Island NY. I have been a Californian ever since and the beauty and magic of San Diego has always been in my heart.
Have so many unforgettable moments at Balboa park! This place right here is what makes San Diego stand out for me and the the love I have for this city💙
Thank you so much. I love Balboa Park and Old Town San Diego. We must continue to preserve these jewels for future generations to enjoy. I definitely need to get out and see more of San Diego. That is the main reason I moved here. Totally awesome video and thanks for sharing!!! A MUST-WATCH!!!!
Been going to Balboa Park since the early 60s. It truly is a Jewel in the City. So many birthdays, weddings, special events, cross country meets, and of course many visits to the World Famous San Diego Zoo in my 61 years of life. So much to see and do, that it can take multiple days to really experience all there is in the Park.
Balboa Park is many, many years of great memories for me when I lived in San Diego and when I return for a visit with family and friends, a return to Balboa Park is always on the agenda. I would not miss it.
I always use to say its humid in Florida, Cold up north, hot in the desert, and in San Diego, weather isn't a topic of discussion. It was nearly always perfect.
FANTASTIC VIDEO!! so many things I had no clue about - just made my chest swell in pride knowing we have such a wonderful "jewel" in our midst - Bless you for all the hard work to put something so amazing together
Beautifully captured. Spectacular narration. You did it. Spot on. I was lucky enough to have spent a few years living very near by and enjoying it immensely. Thank you for this.
Outstanding city planning. If there was a world Prize, I would consider it way, way up there. United States, number one. Great place with a beautiful vibe.
Balboa Park is amazing.. it's a diverse place to see many different type of homeless....... You have out of their mind drugged crazed homeless and then your standard crazy homeless, leaders in San Diego need to do something about this!!!!!!
My then-girlfriend now Awesome Wife and I traveled to San Diego in the early 2000s. Balboa was one of my favorite visits much like the Longwood Gardens and Dupont Estates on the East Coast where I am from but only better due to the wide array of the museums. If I could afford it and was forced to relocate San Diego would no doubt be my number one choice, what a beautiful area. I would probably spend a lot of time on La Jolla eating fish tacos that's for sure!
I took my two preschoolers to the zoo several times per year when their dad was in the Tonkin Gulf. Cost: $1.00, for me as the adult. I learned about the unfamiliar vegetation in my new backyard by taking notes from the signs on the tropical plants at the zoo.
Nice place to walk around. Balboa Park. Went to the Cherry Blossom festival at the Japanese house. I have gone there for a few year. And I am watching this video dated 2015, in 2022 The Hall of Champion is now closed and replaced by Comic Con museum. It wasn't that popular in its final few years.
Beautiful. I just want to know how Balboa Park has an area of 1,875 sq miles (3:14 on video)? I believe it's more like 1.875 sq miles. The comma should be replaced by a period (just saying).
Thanks! The producers of the documentary used the decimal comma (common in Europe) instead of the decimal point. So you are correct that the park is 1.875 sq miles.
Marie Hitchcock, and her sister said that the Puppet Theater should have been named after my mother. Marie Hitchcock and my mother started in the San Diego Library preforming shows, with my mother reading the stories & Marie and Cinder providing the puppets!
I love San Diego and especially Balboa Park but seriously, this video needs a serious re-mix. The music is way to loud and covers the interesting commentary. Well, 6 years later, it's too bad that won't happen.
it would be hilarious if it wouldn't be worrying some people actually believe this was built by people with horse and buggies. good luck trying to find the construction plans and blueprints that would make any sense of that.
What an annoying video… epic fail, which is a darned shame because Balboa Park is indeed a gem. The content was great. SO much history and lots of good current facts (well not current anymore, since this is a few years old). BUT the musical soundtrack was much too loud, often drowning out the narration (which in itself could have been far more engaging, in timing, emphasis, inflection). The narration was also much too fast, but presumably that is because the poor narrator was forced into a 1/2 hour time slot. The video could well have been at least an hour. The fascinating historic photos flashed by much too quickly. I hope the history center will consider making a new, updated, video soon. Ditch the music.
Love San Diego and Balboa park Hospital even i tho had bad tude surgery there could kill me but anyway i should had a lawsuit👀but thank God im still here in St.Louis mo 👀👀👀💅🍷🍷🍷

I live in San Diego for 12 years, Balboa Park to me is what makes San Diego my home.

Quinceañeras, hide and go seek meets, midnight walks xD
The most inclusive and entertaining video representation of Balboa Park, past and present, anywhere. Exceptionally well done.
I agree!!!
This was a pleasure to watch. I will never forget the one day I spent walking Balboa Park.
I met my husband by the lily pond back in 1973. Very special place.
I live on the East Coast but I love Balboa Park! I visit whenever I’m in San Diego!

Very good film, and also San Diego has the best weather year around.

My husbands Great Grandpa Sherman Trease was an artist in Spanish Village. I hope to visit soon with our kids, looks like a magical place.
I remember my first HJ in this park by the Zoro garden. Such a relaxing and enjoyable park!
I love my city

Balboa Park Museum has been my go to for a lot of my creative writing for art, I love my San Diego
I visited Balboa recently as well as the San Diego Zoo. This video brings me back and makes me appreciate it's magnificence. Great video!
Can wait to travel there in a 1 month!!
I used to go Folk dancing at the Park every Sunday!! I really miss it (I live in Germany now)
😉
Can't help but love California. There's no other place like it.
Well done documentary. All you want to know about the history of the Park.
Good job.
Fantastic video. Visiting for the first time in the summer and really looking forward to visiting the park. It's wonderful to learn about the history.

Extremely interesting, but why have such loud background music? It is very annoying and for the hard of hearing it must be quite terrible.
Balboa Park really makes San Diego much more than a two bit GI town.
I'm going to balboa park today in an hour
@8.08 looks quite like a castle (high school?)
What the heck, that was my wife and I at 2:57!! We had no idea that footage even existed!!
Where did all this footage come from?
This is a beautiful video and a lot of great info!! We’re honored to be a part of it!!

The enormous, pastoral, rolling hilled dog park. 😙
1875 square miles? I don't think so. The city of San Diego itself is only 372 square miles.
Wikipedia says it is 1.875 sq mi. Just a missing dot...
my mom and dad got marry in Balboa Park, in the 70ed. every time i go to Balboa Park, is go were they got marry. 1 day i like do the same
That's awesome!
Love San Diego and Balboa park Hospital even i tho had bad tude surgery there could kill me but anyway i should had a lawsuit👀but thank God im still here in St.Louis mo 👀👀👀💅🍷🍷🍷

What a wonderful place. I'm sure illegal immigrants will love to set up some booths there. Don't be racists and say no. They have rights.
