    This is a great breed. I am on my forth. I have had many, many, many dogs in my life and this breed has stolen my heart. They are smart, loyal, cute, a chick magnet, friendly, fearless not aware they are a small dog. They understand so much. They are hypo-alergeric, and gentle with kids. They are good for special needs kids. Very smart dogs that talk through eye contact. Highly recommend this breed.

      @@mainemusso44 First one name Einstein we got after my wife and I were married. The previous couple had a baby and bigger dog where they didn’t like Einstein following the woman around the house all the time. This was natural for any dog and I especially like this bonding behavior. He took to us right away and seemed to understand everything we said to him from day one. He would go to the sliding door and paw at it to be let out. He always stayed close and never tried to run away. You would ask him if he wanted to go with you and he would go to the car. Have many interesting stories about this very special dog. He was old and ended up with a couple different diseases where we were able to enjoy him for additional six months by the vet giving him steroids. We could tell he was having difficulty when he wasn’t as quick to greet us when coming home. On follow up visit when getting ready to leave vet we were called back and told it was time. We were supposedly prepared over his last six months for this but nothing really does. My wife is a nurse and feels that it animals being able to be put down is kind act when compared to suffering. I differ from this but understand her perspective. He had a good life up to the very end and was very loved. We stayed in the room to try to comfort him while the vet put him down. Hardest thing to do, but glad I was with him. We cried long and hard afterwards.
      Next dog we got was a puppy we named E.J. for Einstein Junior. We got him a few months after Einstein, who I buried in back yard with special marker near our back deck. My wife wasn’t ready for another pet as the pain of loss hurt her deeply. I have always had dogs and love them and other animals, so I need one soon to help with the grief while knowing each have their own personality. EJ was highly motivated by food and was extremely easy to train. He was more my pet as a couple of years later my wife brought home a female Maltese named Kesha after he friend’s mother passed away. The friend has worked with my wife for years and are close. The friend has several pets already and had to take in her mother’s other pets at the time. When they opened the bedroom door at her mothers apartment Kesha went towards my wife and sort of picked her. When we introduced the two dogs it seemed to feel EJ was mine and she was my wife’s. Keesha’s original owner was deaf and as a result had interesting habits and personality. For example,she would light tug on your hair if you were laying down it she wanted your attention or the phone would ring like singling to get a prompter. She didn’t care much for male people but over time got along great with me. She would follow my wife to the kitchen part way before stopping and pearling around the corner at me in the living room until my wife would be on her return trip to watch her tv in our bedroom when Kesha would follow her back. One time she hide some of her treats under my pillow to make it so I wouldn’t sleep there next to my wife. I eventually won her over with cookies like my wife’s former husband did. One call the friend made to my wife the I answered I mentioned that if she ever needed a home for Kesha, we would be glad to care for her. The lady jumped on it as she had a house full of pets and knew she could visit Kesha knowing she would be well cared. Kesha was older and started having some occasional epileptic seizures, she also had cataracts and went blind. Dogs can maneuver very well when they loose sight, but the first time you see a seizure it is scary and troubling experience as there isn’t much you can do for the except keep them comfortable and safe from hurting themselves. This went on for over a year and she got so she didn’t like being held or touched, but she never was mean about it. It hurt watching her decline with blindness and sometimes getting stuck underneath some wooden chairs in the kitchen. I came home from a trip late from out of state and was able to hold her and pray over her. I asked God to tell me what to do. If He wanted me to take her to the vet, as painful as that would be, to have her put down or if it was time, that He take her peacefully without pain and suffering. I would be obedient no matter how much it hurt me. About 1:30AM she lifted her little head and let out a long howl giving up her spirit and landed her head back down in my arms. I had to call my wife into the room we were at to verify if she passed as her body was still warm. Buried her next to Einstein. Interesting EJ was with us the whole time when she passed and knew what was going on.
      A few months after EJ got out and was exploring the front yard. I called him and had a treat for him which he gulped down quickly. He stumbled and feel like having a seizure which was troubling to me. I called vet and asked what to do and how to do crap on small dog. Didn’t get far with help from them and dogs lips turned bluish. I scooped him up and drove to closest vet trying to do cpr while I was on the cell with the emergency vet from before getting instructions. I got to closest vet and immediately took him into a room. The vet at this place told me that the food got lodged sideways deep down and cut off his air supply. This is same vet hospital/clinic where we had also taken Einstein. So EJ ended dying in my arms while getting him to the vet. He said there wasn’t anything I could do, but it still hurts. I am very cautious about the size of food and treats that I give pets after having this experience. EJ knew to get certain toys you would ask him to find that could be located anywhere in the house. He could differentiate things, as Einstein was also able to do (had one experience that he could tell closely matched color wise bowls that was difficult for humans to distinguish even when side by side. He only would eat out of his bowl at my in laws and not the nearly identical one the feed my sister in laws dogs out of). EJ was special too and buried next to Einstein and Keesha with special markers along with their pictures and write up of information about them
      My wife was taking care of my father in law nearby helping her mother as he Alzheimer’s and intestinal problems. My mother came to visit and we went to a nearby breeder of Maltese dogs. She understood my needs and showed me a little dog named Pippy who had a great pedigree even though she was pet quality. Breeders are very selective people and if you understand showing dogs you would know why. Pippy was born June 12, 2012 and was only two ounces when she was born. They were not sure she would survive, but she did and is a very hearty dog not afraid of anything even though she weighs 5.5 pounds. We have bonded extremely well. The breeder would watch her for me sometimes (once after my knee surgery for broken patella or knee cap from serious fall on ice) and has remarked how tight our bonding is. Once I was able to visit her on crutches when I got a ride, she knew exactly what was going on and that I was hurt. She stayed by my side and stared at my knee. So Pippy is the fourth Maltese and keeps me company. I mostly had bigger dogs (collies, springer spaniel, Weimar , white German Shepard’s, snauzers, labs, my bother’s golden retrievers, my wife’s Boston terrier who recently passed away a year ago) and I am about to turn sixty three on the seventh of April. She keeps saying that Pippy is our last dog, but I bugged the crap out of her for EJ and then Pippy. She didn’t know I had been visiting with the breeder before getting Pippy when I got her to cave into my need for a dog. Pippy turn nine this June and I expect to have her around for a long time to come and don’t want to think of any dreadful days ahead. With COVID we have been with each other almost around the clock. She doesn’t like it when I leave to travel but would settle down after a minute and a half at most of a howl. She loves when my wife gets home and stays close to her when I travel from my work in sales. I wish I could take her with me because she rides very well but I would be able to leave her in the car while I make my visit. Locally I take with me on errands, fast food and shopping but not the occasional sit down restaurant. You would be surprised at the number of places that give small dog treats like the bank, etc. Everyone seems to remark about her. This dog is my friend and very close to me. She keeps me company. Like the sign above the toilet in my brothers bathroom say, “the more I get to know people, the more I like dogs.” It seems I am closer to Pippy, who understands me and my needs for affection/companionship than I am to people. So hopefully this long winded story answered your question and gave you reasons why I love this breed (but also all dogs - they all go to heaven). Thank you for asking and letting me share. Hope you too learn how wonderful Maltese dogs are as friends.

      Hello can you tell me if they bark a lot? we live in an apartment

    • @jimthompson3422
      @jimthompson3422 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@karenmelendrez7673 They are excellent dogs especially for apartment people. We mainly live in a condominium that is like an apartment with three floors and six units in my building. Maltese dogs don’t bark much, if at all, has been my experience even at our home. They didn’t bark at the breeders home where I got my last one. She had about thirteen living with her. The girl up stairs from me got a Yorke and it barks often and some neighbors complain about it, but love my little dog. Not sure if it because they don’t care for her immaturity or attitude, etc. or the dog or that she also has about four cats (three more than is allowed by the association). I have known other yorkies that don’t bark and believe it is the way the girl upstairs works with and trains the dog. I guess it might depend on the dog and how it is trained. My Maltese is very quite and just likes to cuddle up and follow me around from room to room. You need to put time in with them as they have feeling and emotion like you.. Like any dog it is what you put into them. I talk to mine all the time and she (as well the others I have had) will seem to understand you and be very responsive to you. Dogs can read people’s emotions and want to bond very well, so please spend the time with your pet as you will have more than a pet, you will gain a true and loyal friend that is always in a good mood and glad to greet you no matter how tough your day has been. I hate that people treat animals cruelty and those commercials you see on tv from spca tear at my heart. My dog likes to go places with me and places plus people and workers love seeing her and you would be surprised how many places ask to offer her a treat. I don’t take her into restaurants and don’t leave her in the car , as that can be dangerous. She has cried at times for 30 seconds to a minute before she settles down when I leave her as she has bonded with me very strongly, especially since the pandemic. This is nothing bad at all and understandable as she wants to know I will be back soon. It isn’t bothersome to us or our neighbors and is very quiet. I learned from my breeder that if you see the dog doing a behavior you like then give the name to the behavior and encourage it with praise. Soon the dog will dog whatever it is on command. I only do positive rewards and things with my dog. I never discipline with scolding or spanking as everything I researched and learned said that they don’t understand what they are being punished for. You have to correct negative behavior at the time of the act through positive reinforcement of what you desire. I have mine trained to use pee pad but she will go outdoors whenever I take her. Dogs want to please you so it it very important to show the positive things especially when they are doing what you want. Hope this answers all your questions I love dogs and remember all dogs go to heaven.

    My babys father was a pure Maltese, his mother a Greek Kokoni terrier. He's absolutely perfect! And goes absolutely everywhere with me.
    Super smart and affectionate. Super easy to train, Good with all animals and most people. And I haven't had a problem with him as far as the weather is concerned. He loves playing in the snow just as much as he likes playing on the beach.
    The only downside I can see (which isn't really a downside) is that he's become very attached to me and sometimes gets defensive. But I don't allow him to get away with that behaviour as I don't like it.
    His color is this gorgeous ombre grey colour. Starting off light peach, going onto light grey, then dark grey and then back at the end of the hairs. So he never had the problem of eye stains ect...
    He is my spirit animal and I can't imagine my life without him.

    • @nancycurtis488
      @nancycurtis488 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m sure your pup is sweet and just precious but the hair coloration you describe is not indicative of a pure blood Maltese. You can order a DNA test for not a lot of money to see what your dog is mixed with which is what I did when I realized my little Sassy was not the “right” body shape for a Maltese and she had curlier hair in some areas. Her DNA came back that she is pure Maltese only on one side which makes her 85.5% Maltese and 12.5% Bichon Frise on the other which makes her not even an expensive (and believe me she was) designer dog…she is just what used to be called a mixed breed mutt…but, I love her so much anyway. At five years of age she is still tiny, which is one of the Maltese traits that I really wanted. She has more of the Bichon personality traits than I would like but she is very smart and has been very easy to train and teach tricks to. She is very attached to both me and my husband ( more to me) which does make it harder to leave her and Mr. Jingles, 10, our other mixed male rescue, and Missy, our female red dapple rescue Dachshund, who is about 12. As long as they are all together, they do great. They all travel well together in the car. As long as they are with US….they…and we are happy. The main drawback to owning a Maltese is the expense of having tho have them groomed every 4 to 6 weeks. In our area…east Texas…it cost $99 and change. I think I got .31 cents back in change from a hundred dollar bill and that had included tax. We keep them on Bravecta…every 12 weeks at about $30 dollars per dose every 12 weeks and they are on Heartguard Plus once a month and that is about $10.00 for each one of the dogs but I found websites in Canada and in Australia where you can but pet meds cheaper. You have to keep dogs on Heartguard Plus all 12 months of the year in most of Texas because it can be warm enough for mosquitoes to hatch out at any time of the year. I had a sweet little 10 year old Dachshund died in my lap from heart worms… it was so, so horrible…I will NEVER again own another dog that is not on heart worm prevention med….and if your dogs go outside, anywhere in Texas, you are just doubly smart, for you and your dog, dogs, or cat to keep them on flea and tick meds. Despite the expense, our dogs are worth every single penny!

    • @funkyfiss

      @@nancycurtis488 Thankyou so much for your response, no he isnt full bred Maltese, his father was. He is mixed breed. His mother was also mixed but mostly Greek terrier Kokoni. He's about 350 ounces/10 kilos. So hes not really Maltese size. Although boys are generally bigger in general. I've never thought about dna testing him, it's a fun suggestion though. I would love to know where he gets this color from.
      I don't take my dog to the groomers. I save allot of money doing it at home. He gets brushed once a day and has a bath once every 2 weeks and around once a month I tidy up his paws face and backside with machine and hairdresser scissors.
      I also got this hairbrush that gently grooms his undercoat. He's a really good boy and he's never given me problems really. I got so good at grooming my dog I started cutting my husbands hair and have gotten really good at that so... trying to save money anyway I can right now 😂
      However I only have one dog so I can imagine with more dogs there is allot more work so I absolutely understand the groomers especially with a bichon frise mix which sounds absolutely adorable.
      I'm really sorry for your loss, loosing a loved one is always extremely painful. I do give my dog heartworm medication and also the flea and tick drops for the back of his neck. I would absolutely hate to loose my dog child over something like that.
      I also trained him to not take food off the street. As there were instances of people putting rat poison in my area.
      Thankyou for the wonderful tips. I wish you all the happiness in the world with your animal children 😊

    To eliminate the rusty stains around the eyes and mouth, simply get some beef liver, sprinkle it with garlic powder, and bake it fully in the oven. Once cooled, put it in a food processor and mince it until it's finely granulated. Put one - two teaspoons sprinkled over their meal every day. Store the rest in the fridge.

      Start brushing their teeth as soon as you get them, even if it's only 2 teeth at a time. Next day, 4 teeth, and so on. Forget the toothpaste; just warm water will do. Be gentle but persistent. Praise lavishly after brushing. Use a toddler toothbrush. Nothing to eat after brushing. Brush before bedtime. Keep at it and you'll save yourself thousands of dollars and a lot of stress, not to mention a lot of pain for your little dog. Bad teeth can and will kill a dog. Wish more owners would do this for their pets; it's a necessity, not optional, for ALL breeds. If you can't properly take care of your dog, don't get one. BTW, a daily walk is also a must do; don't be lazy, just DO it.

    My Maltese/Shitzu dog Molly has seizures occasionally and has bad flea allergies. She has also has teeth removed due to her mouth being too small and has developed cataracts in her older age of 12. She’s still lively and playful despite losing her adopted brother recently, Merlin who was the same mixed breed. He had liver cancer and passed at just 8 years of age. Besides that, he had no health issues whatsoever. 😔💟💞☮️

      I constantly clean around my maltipoos eyes so that the staining doesn’t get that bad and I also shave or cut the stain fur off. Grooming will only do so much. I read that giving them purified water is supposed to help but I didn’t much notice a difference.

    • @jimthompson3422
      @jimthompson3422 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it will. Since the Covid thing where we spent a lot more time together constantly she would get some separation anxiety and do a little crying howl which didn’t or doesn’t last long. When I have to leave I tell her that I will be back and she seems to understand, just don’t give into the anxiety behavior or you will reinforce it. Leave a tv or radio on if you need to leave or take the dog with you, but don’t leave in car. Mine gets all sorts of attention and treats when running errands. I don’t take her usually if I plan on going somewhere to eat, but a few places didn’t have a problem and I keep her close. She is well behaved especially when she is with me. You would be surprised how much love and attention she gets everywhere. It happens evertime we go out.

      Ive had one in Australia for 8 years, our summers are extremely hot, long and dry and she handles it ok but I have her shaved during the hot months. In the winter although mild here she doesn't mind wearing a coat

    • @jimthompson3422
      @jimthompson3422 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can get your dog a coat and you monitor the time outside or better yet keep them inside. Mine is uses piddle pads so doesn’t need to get out in bad weather. Because they are so small you need to be watchful they don’t get chilled from the cold, but they are a hearty little breed and should be fine. Just don’t leave them out unsupervised as a small breed could get col rapidly.

      I have had two males and two females, all are good with different qualities. Mine turns ten in June and hope she lives another decade. My wife doesn’t want another dog if something happens to mine but I love dogs and need their companionship which is why I got my present one after the passing of the previous dog. They bring such joy and love. For my wife she can’t handle the heartbreak of loosing a dog and therefore doesn’t want to get another to restore the love and friendship as well as healing after grieving a loss. Each dog is an individual and can’t be replaced but they will fill a void and are deserving of love so we all should get another dog. They a a gift from God. There are so many dogs that need a loving home to care for them we shouldn’t deny a new pet the opportunity

      All good suggestions. Try taking the dog with you. I talk to mine and tell I will be back,etc. you can also get a companion dog. Don’t reinforce any unwanted behavior. Mine settles down quickly when she realizes I am going out for a bit and can’t take her. I also make sure I great her first when I return and call out for her when coming through the door.

      Try using a piddle pad in the location the dog goes to. While dogs have a keen sense of smell they usually go to the familiar place. Once the dog starts using the pad, then you can move it closer to the door. Disciplining any dog or rubbing its nose in it only confuses the dog as they don’t understand what the discipline is for. Use positive reinforcement and encouragement whenever the dog goes where it is supposed to do it’s business. If you catch the dog circling or trying to go where it shouldn’t gently take it to where it should go and then praise the dog when it finishes it’s business. Be very positive in your training and have lots of patience. There are other methods like crate training. There are many good books done by professionals. You will form a great bond with your pet if you put in the time and effort, as it is very well worth it.

      You have to put him on a schedule. Start out with every 2 hours and make sure you’re rewarding him when he potties outside. Also monitor his food and drink intake. I feed mines once a day with a treat or two and give them fresh water 3 times a day. After 6pm, no more water. Their last potty round is at 8pm and they are good until about 6am in the morning. Make a routine and be consistent with it.
