Mechanism for plastic deformation in metals

  • In this video I provide an introduction to the atomic level mechanism for plastic, or permanent, deformation in metals. Linear crystalline imperfections known as dislocations are introduced and we explore how dislocations permit the step-by-step breaking and reforming of atomic bonds in a crystal undergoing plastic deformation.

    why cant they slide without dislocations

      I think maybe because if they did not dislocate, that would be still elastic (can return back to shape), and this must be plastic, can not return to old shape, this video is about plastic, that is why they slide only by dislocation.

    Good job but more prepare next time maybe with a blackboard with the draws ready ...
