Tonal Home Gym Review after 4 Months

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 7 ก.พ. 2025
- I have been using the Tonal Home Gym for almost 4 months now and I wanted to update on progress. Tonal has been a hot home gym product right up there with Peloton for the last year as people spend more time working out at home. These are my opinions on Tonal which I paid for myself as a means to get in better shape moving forward.

I just wanted to thank you for being a real person with real challenges and a real track record about working out. Your reviews mean a lot more to me than the muscle-bound workout pros that talk about Tonal. You are on a similar journey to the rest of us normal people. Thank you for sharing your experience with Tonal in the way that you do.
For sure, I appreciate your appreciation for the non flashy "normal" people.
Really interested in your 6 mo update video. Still have plans for it?
I am 65, wife 63, just got our Tonal and have had for 4 days and the very first thing my wife and I said after my 3rd and her 2nd workout is the coaching is huge. We are very active but wanted to build more strength, this is what we chose and I think we are going to love it.
One of my favorite Tonal reviews! No frills, just honesty.
This is such a nice straightforward approach to a review. Thank you so much. Our Tonal is arriving in about a week and I'm super excited.
How do u like it so far?
Just ordered mine today. I like that it has feed back and rewards. Interaction is a great way to stay engaged. Thanks for video.
Thanks for the update! Mine arrives in a few weeks and I can’t wait!
Love your straight forward no BS reviews.
Thanks appreciate it
I love this video for the sole purpose that it shows a legit review of the item I mean it’s in he’s master bedroom and that’s great because not everyone has a big house and or spare garage to put it in. Plus been in the bedroom motivates you to work out at anytime. Wonderful job love the review. Will hopefully purchase Tonal soon.
It's all about the new habits bro and you've made them!!
Forget the trolls bro and continue to rock on! You're doing an amazing job and you're making incredible progress!! Keep up the amazing work brother and THANK YOU for your support! Excellent breakdown!!
Love that he shouted you out Joey! Every body loves your transformation! Inspiration to all of us.
@@CyrusPenrod it's a privilege to be able to have you guys as part of this amazing community! Love you all back very much and I'm very grateful for my man shouting me out!
Felt like the kind of review I would do. Honesty from the heart. Not a sales pitch. Great job!
I see a difference based on that short video of before and after. Keep it up! 💪🏽
And the best thing..... You can't cheat TONAL. 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽. My tonal is getting installed tomorrow!
Great summary of the benefits of Tonal! I agree 100% it is expensive but worth it! I have had Tonal for the past year & will never go back to the gym as long as I have the Tonal. It is motivational & you feel o.k. trying new exercises in the comfort of your home.
Listen whatever works for you guys. If machines or bodyweight or weights or Alll....! Just do it! Good job buddy keep it up!
Great review. I just bought one a week ago, but I am happy to hear feedback like this to help solidify my decision.
Good information.. Can’t wait to see your 6 months transformation. I guess it’s about time .I just started with Tonal 😞
I love my Tonal! Bought it Black Friday 2020, it arrived and installed 03/04/21 and I can honestly say it is the best investment I've ever made.
Was it cheaper during Black Friday? Wondering if it ever goes on sale.
@@petersonfamily6223 They offered free installation ($250 off) and some free equipment. It wasn't a huge deal, but better than no savings. I'm on an 18 month payment plan, should be done 2nd half of this year. Best investment I've ever made, my physical/mental health has improved dramatically. It's been a lifesaver during pandemic having a full compact intelligent gym in the comfort of my home.
I totally agree with you. If I take a week or two off its really hard to keep going and start back up. It seems like the key to almost everything is persistence. This thing won't make you lose the dad bod though (not you personally) but that's gonna involve diet. Change your diet and you will look totally different in 3 months.
I love the tonal. Man it's a space saver and I love there interaction. Keep it up brother
Thanks for the update! This is exactly what I was hoping to hear. I have one that is due to ship any day now so really looking forward to it. I too struggle with losing the momentum when I get interrupted as well. So much about this looks like its going to be exactly the type of feedback and availability that I need to finally get on that journey.
Is there anything that you don't like about it or wish was better?
keep up the good work man! good for you! stay focused!
Great video man! Keep the grind going! And remember, the trolls are always the unhappy ones, so ignore them.
Nice progress! Looking forward to the next update!
Great honest video bro. You’re doing great
I appreciate that!
The intensity makes a huge difference. You throw that extra bit into your intensity with your qork out your shirt will be wet! Keep it up bud!
Facts Joey B is the man!!! Keep up the good work!!
Great review. I'd love to see if one could achieve a professional bodybuilder physique with this device.
Though that Joey Bee guys transformation looks great
When you gonna put out an updated video on Tonal?
Sold! Thanks bro 🤙
Interesting. I am the opposite. I like to go to the gym and I do badly at home workouts. I like the motivation and I have made a lot of gym friends. Keep it up.
That's my problem i would never workout at home consistently at home
Great work. Thank you!
Good review man !
Very nice job. Thank you
You stayed your goals clearly in your “5 things I hate” video, so congrats on getting done what you wanted to accomplish. This approach seems able to make the difference between declining with age, or not. So screw any naysayers....you found something that works for you.
Good job. Stay away from ugly people. This is exercise and it is better then nothing. Home gyms are the future
Hey my guy! You should do a 1 and (almost) 4 month update! How is it going? How are you doing? Staying consistent with your workout routine?
I still use it frequently. I just haven't done an update because my channel isn't mainly a fitness channel and my original Tonal content only performed okay. I will probably do an update again when I get bored with everything else going on.
@@GearsGadgets I’d like to see or hear an update. Do you think it is worth the cost?
Great Video! Thanks for the awesome content. What do you have to do for maintenance? How often?
5 yr old doing yoga on Tonal - I love that!
Love this. Sounds like you had a bought of plantar fasciitis. No big deal. Had it once bilaterally for a month, never had it since. 🏍🏍✌🏼✌🏼
Keep it up man great job
I would very much like to see you try this with diet changes as well for comparison. Think it would be kool to see the differences in results. 4 month diet vs non diet. Thanks for the vid!
It has been about 6 months since this video. Are you still using the machine? Would you still recommend it?
Did you engineer the shelf yourself or buy it that way?
Nice Video....that referral code...does it take 100 off the price? it doesn't seem to populate we are getting $200 as a health care discount.
What is the shelf you have? Looks like it almost has custom hangars to connect (hang) the smart accessories. Where can I get one? Thanks! Keep up the good work and stay motivated!
Are there any ongoing costs? Once you pay the several thousand dollars do you then own a great looking useful piece of equipment without catches??
Where did you get that rack to hang these accessories ?
Very helpful video. Honest real world video from an "average Joe".
Thanks, that's my goal.
i wonder if the referral can be used with the veteran discount as well.
You can lose weight without changing your diet Ive done it. And I'm getting this and the pelton treadmill in a few months.
Is it rugged enough to stand a good workout being that it's mounted on a wall?
Diet is everything. If you don't change it, you won't see much change in body composition. After intense workout and no change in diet, you pretty much just undid all that hard work consuming all those calories back. Also, do you find workout out alone boring sometimes? I find traditional gym with people in it much more motivating for some reason.
Are you still planning a follow up vid?
Hows the tonal treating ya? No longer in use? Have a pelaton and after a year it became a clothes hanger
@@bwrick21 I still use the Tonal. I haven’t been religious with it as I took more to running but it’s certainly still used.
So it’s been 10 months since your last Tonal update. What’s going on with it?
7:09 - Very good. I can see the difference. Looks like it's working. I agree with all the reasons you cited. I, too, dislike the judgmental types in gyms.
Will u do an update?
Its coming sometime in the near(ish) future.
Where did you find that wall mount to hang the accessories on?
I made it myself.
Omg I need this ☝️♥️
Where did you get that shelf for your accessories?
I built it myself. It ended up costing more than the Tonal accessory shelf so I never made a video about “how to build a more expensive shelf” lol
@@GearsGadgets I just found someone on Etsy who sells the shelf with the hooks for $69.00. Not bad. My Tonal comes next Sat so I am so excited. I watched all your reviews. I really like your honesty. Keep them coming. Thanks.
So, are you still using it and what are your thoughts on it now?
Yeah I still use it, just haven't shared an update mainly because the content didn't perform that well on my channel because fitness really isn't my "niche". I still think it is an incredible piece of equipment.
@@GearsGadgets thanks for replying back…. Your review I thought was awesome. Seemed sincere and helpful… I might end up getting one
Where did you get the accessories shelf?
I made it myself from an Etsy shelf and some Etsy aluminum tonal clips. It ended up costing more than the actual tonal shelf so I didn’t bother making a video showing people how to spend more time and more money making one themselves.
What happened to the updates with this? Didn't keep with it or just not had time?
I still have it. Just haven’t done the update. I probably owe one soon.
How high are your ceilings
Working out is definitely a plus if you have a nagging body part. You do need to it safely though. You can’t beat having a personal trainer if you can afford one.
Membership fee will keep you coming back! You also can create your own workouts and not pay the membership fee if you want. I find the personal trainers amazing! I love my tonal after two months of use!!
The membership fees is what steers me away. It’s pricy out the gate and then they slap that on. I don’t know.
Honestly, its worth it. I got the Fusion from nordic track and instantly regretted it. Sold it and got the tonal and use it every single day now.
@@kdal6744 thanks for the advice. I may look into it more then.
In my opinion the membership is definitely expensive but it's completely worth it!
The initial hardware cost of $3k is expensive.
But for most people, monthly gym membership + travel cost of going to and fro the gym 20+ times a month is just as expensive if not more expensive than the tonal monthly cost.
Plus think about the time saved. Time is money
@@UltimateHibz absolutely!
When's the six month review coming?
It may not be your purpose, but I see your transformation and you're looking good! I'm enjoying mine sans the plastic arms and occasional digital weight starting without my touching anything.
Thanks I appreciate that. I also get the occasional weight starting without touching anything but other than that I really don't have any significant complaints with Tonal. Its a beast!!
Update?
Did you stop using tonal
nope, still use it all the time. new video coming soon
Anything that gets you motivated to move in a healthy way is a good thing. Fuck trolls.
Tonal was the best piece of home fitness equipment I’ve owned up until recently . I decided to sell mine after a year due to the membership increasing to 60 a month which I couldn’t justify because I only used about 20 percent of what the membership offers I never did the live classes or workout videos I used it just like I would at the gym back day arm day chest day etc with manual mode it’s to bad they offer no tiers and without the membership the machine is garbage .
I agree that the $60 price hike is absurd and I am not really thrilled with it, I understand why you sold it with that kind of price hike. I don't know if i agree that the machine is garbage without the membership, its just not AS good BUT for some one (like me) who has already paid for their Tonal, I could never imagine selling it for a couple grand then re-joining a gym which will cost $60 a month anyway. Kind of a bummer they raised the price but I plan on keeping mine and paying the subscription fee simply for the convenience of space required for the kind of resistance training it provides. IF I had the room for a rack and physical weights, I would possibly reconsider. Ultimately I think Peleton buys them out in the next 6 months and a lot more changes probably coming from it.
@@GearsGadgets I sold mine for 3000 bought the vitruvian there’s no features without the membership I saw a video on it you lose everything you can’t even play music lol
@@Bendova215 interesting never heard of vitruvian but just looked at it and don’t like it because of limited to upward vertical motion but if it works for you I understand why you would have switched. For me to go through that work to sell Tonal for $3,000, to buy vitruvian for $3,500 (bench and accessories) just to get a free year of membership only to have to pay $39 a month after that year seems like a lot of work. Also, who knows, maybe vitruvian raises rates by the time that year is up. Just doesn’t seem like a move I would’ve made but different strokes for different folks.
@@GearsGadgets they have an accessory called the vframe that attaches to it and allows you to do any exercise from the top down like you just described it’s way more portable and it doesn’t have to be bolted into a wall also 440 pounds of resistance and another worry I had with tonal was the only one year warranty they offered because if the screen never goes which it will eventually fail .You can’t use the machine at all.
@@Bendova215 I might look at it more seriously if the V-Frame actually comes to market. Looks like it’s only made an appearance in some teaser videos to gauge interest but also looks like it will cost a fortune. In terms of the screen, I have just as much concern of vitruvian breaking since it’s 100% electronic as I do my Tonal breaking. My Tonal is over 2 years old and has had zero issues. Again, happy for you, but based on looking at Vitruvian, zero aspects of it have me remotely interested in switching. 200 lbs on Tonal is perfectly fine for me, I don’t plan on entering any strong man competitions anytime soon and maintaining at that 200 max for every conceivable motion at 40+ years old is 100% fine for me.
My Brother-in-Law loves his, but I just don't like the fact that you have to spend money on a monthly membership. The price of the machine is enough. For that fact I'll stick with my Bullworker which I have been using on and off since I was 17 and I'm 58 now.
I see where you are coming from but in all reality, I do think the programing is worth the monthly payment but thats subjective I guess.
You don't need a personal trainer. Someone like you or a soccer mom who just wants to stay relatively healthy and fit could literally buy a pair of 20 lb dumbbells and do 100x squats with them a day. That would torch your entire lower body. You don't need a degree in exercise science to train yourself.
You could then take those 20 lb dumbells and press them over your head 100x
As many sets as you need to hit 100 reps on squat and press.
Follow that with several longer walks a week and a day or to of HIIT , and you can become very fit.
Would cost you about $50 for a pair of 20 lb dumbbells, and with squat and press you just worked 80% of the muscles in your body
You could tell people 1000 different ways to do 1000 different things in their life the way YOU see it or you could realize different strokes for different folks.
@@GearsGadgets the point was the squat and press are very simple, human movements, and by doing them you're getting 80% of the results with 20% of the complexity.
Someone who is going to use this is probably out of shape, sedentary, or more importantly, NOVICE
No, a novice lifter doesn't need 200 exercise movement options. They're going to get hurt. They need foundational, compound movements to build a strength base. Someone who works out twice a month has no business doing quad extensions, or leg curls, or bicep curls,, or random lame isolation movements when they're in terrible condition .
You showed yourself doing curls here. And front raises. Both isolation, waste of time movements.
Legitimate peer reviewed studies have been done showing that chin ups hit and stimulate biceps the same or better than curls. That means if you're doing curls you are wasting your time, because you could've just done chin ups or assistance chin ups if you aren't strong enough and got the same or better bicep stimulus while also getting massive lat work, which is a huge muscle group in your back. Along with other secondary mover muscles.
You did front raises when you could have done overhead presses and instead of hitting just front delts in isolation you could've hit your entire shoulder, all three heads, triceps, and many other groups to a lesser degree.
You have slim to no muscle and you're doing exercises to isolate groups instead of doing movements that work massive amounts of your entire body at the same time.
So no. It isn't different strokes for different folks. The squat works the same muscles on everyone, and it is a natural human movement that facilitates performance in a host of arenas.
Front raises are an unnatural movement that aren’t going to make you better at anything but front raises
If you would've done nothing but presses and squats for 34 workouts you'd look drastically better than having spent the same time on bicep curls and front raises. Just a fact
@@urdadshusband781 you sound knowledgeable. How can I cook communicate with you further?
Thank you
So what happened?
Still use it, still love it, just stopped producing content around it because it wasn’t performing all that well and I’m not a fitness channel so I just moved on to other things
just stumbled on your channel.. watched an old video and this video.. and i can confirm youve lost weight.. lol
#IGNORETHETROLLS
You said 69
Could have just got some resistance bands and done the same shit.
Oh how I love ridiculous comments like this.
I see no results in your muscle tone
That’s because I’m not trying to become an IG model, just a normal guy trying to get normal stronger and could care less if shallow people can “see” the results.
The people that go to the gym don’t even care about what you look like or what you’re doing. They are in there for themselves
The majority yes but there is no doubt a minority of self righteous gym dorks who lack any real character and use the gym as their identity and take their insecurities out on other innocent people who are trying to better themselves.
I bought one..........it's a piece of shit!!!.........and they won't give me my money back!!!
Context please? What dont you like about it? How long have you had it? What has the process been in trying to return it?
You got paid or got the machine free for the good reviews
Or I just bought it full price and did an independent review on my TH-cam channel. My integrity and abiding by FTC sponsorship laws is FAR more valuable to me than sneaking in positive reviews in exchange for free product without making the appropriate disclosures. I can appreciate the pessimism or skepticism but in this instance you’re radar is off.
If you've been to a gym, you would see that legit lifters aren't the "trolls" you mentioned.
I didn’t say legit lifters were trolls. My point is that the gym has its fair share or judgmental trolls and they take different shapes and forms. Wasn’t a shot at legit lifters, it was a shot at self righteous meatheads.
Why don’t you ever talk about all the fees that are associated? Or the expenses per month? Either you aren’t being very straight forward? Or you are being sponsored. In which case you’ll get it for free since you sure helping with the business. Either way you are missing a huge chunk of info. Your reviews are ok. Would like to see the expenses also. Many reviewers that purchase the machine hate the monthly. Or the 1yr obligation you must make.
I don’t harp on it because it’s clear as day what the prices are and that there is a monthly fee. It’s not like there’s some hidden monthly expenses I need to “disclose”. I’m providing content for people who are interested and people who are interested can find the basic pricing details on the website with everyone else, they CANT find what it’s like to own one from an independent reviewer (sorry not sponsored). You are more than welcome to create your OWN channel and share whatever content you would like with the world.
Weight loss has everything to do with diet. People always fail to realize this. You can literally have no machine or weights even. Doing push-ups, sit ups, squats. Burpees... list goes on an on. You will get in the same shape as long as your diet is on point. Now once you get on track with body weight exercise , start adding weights or even resistance bands which cost literally like $30.
These machines are just scams. They literally do what you can normally with one bench and a few weights. No subscription or any cheesy trainers
what can you do that I can not do with a set of bands for under 100 dollars? to me, this machine is a rip-off
What can you do with a set of bands that you can’t do with sit-ups and push-ups? Bands seem like a rip-off. You can just follow that rabbit hole right back to the couch if you want. Same logic would apply to comparing Peloton to an $89 Walmart bicycle, if that’s where your head is at, your not even remotely in the ballpark of understanding what your looking at.
@@GearsGadgets well I do not know who sam is but you did prove my point that it is a rip off you can do the same with sit up and push up bet you got ripped off for 4000 dollar
@@arnoldgoldin5535 lol. Haters gonna hate, it’s just what they do. I just love the fabricated narrow sighted narratives used to justify the hate.
so now I'm a hater because I thought it was a rip-off, did I tell you not to buy it no I thought this was a review if you only want to hear how great it is go to there web site I gave my opinion did not call anyone a name the hater is you, you can not take it that I think it is a rip-off
@@arnoldgoldin5535 lol well I think it’s fair to call someone who actively chimed in to hate on something they don’t have any experience a hater. If you spent 6 seconds looking at comments and forums from people who have purchased this machine you would see there aren’t many who regret the purchase. Go look for a used on eBay and let me know how many you find from people who thought it was a waste of money. It’s just clear your opinion is rooted in simplicity, budget, and lack of product knowledge but you feel fine telling other grownups that they wasted their money. So yes, I would classify this as hating.
Keep on deleting the bad comments
I don’t delete “Bad comments” matter of fact if you spent 30 seconds looking at my channel you will see I LOVE to engage with “bad comment”. Again, your skeptical and I can appreciate that but you got the wrong guy my friend. Just a regular 38 year old dude putting out my opinions and steering someone wrong only tarnishes my reputation which is the ONLY thing I have on this platform. Again, you have me all wrong my friend.
Addendum: I WILL BLOCK commenters that get personal but comments that talk bad toward a product I like can live on my channel forever. I honestly love when people give opposing views on products I love because it helps other people vet the information and make educated decisions. I treat this channel no different than I treat my house, if you knock on my door, I answer, then you decide to start insulting me, I just close the door. TH-cam trolls LOVE to feel entitled to the comments section and I find it adorably absurd.
Damn this channel definitely takes the cake 🎂 is this kd burner account ive never seen someone get so butthurt over comments in my life🤣... incoming
@@And1one757 lol hilarious how trolls perceive creator replies in trolly connotation. Seeing the world through troll colored glasses.
Seems kind of cool but I wouldn't want to have it in my bedroom though. Also it seems like I can outgrow this thing or break it. I am pretty rough on my things so need something durable.
