I definitely don't agree regarding the sound here, as it sounds like the SNES version is being played in an echo chamber or large canyon or something, but I agree with you on the rest. It certainly looks nicer and is even more graphically impressive in many places on SNES.

It's difficult to decide between either version. They're both good in their own right. Overall, I think I'd rate the SNES version a bit higher because it has slightly nicer graphics, its Pac-Man voice sounds more expressive and the music instrumentation is better in my opinion. Say what you will about the SNES music's reverb, I think I'm one of the few people who can actually tolerate it, if only because I'm used to it after having heard that same reverb effect in several other SNES soundtracks. Plus, I'm not a fan of that crackly drum sample they used in the Genesis/Mega Drive version's music.
As much as it may be weird to admit, this is actually one of my favourite games in the whole series despite not playing like a traditional Pac-Man game. It had a unique spin on the point-and-click genre in that the main character is constantly moving around and interacting with things on their own without your input, and because of Pac-Man's wide range of emotions and the myriad of things you can make him interact with, several of the game's points of interest have different outcomes depending on how Pac-Man is feeling when his attention is turned towards them, so the possibilities are almost endless. Finally, this is, without a doubt, one of the _FUNNIEST_ games I have ever played. The Schadenfreude factor is through the roof! You don't have to clear each of the game's four missions straight away, you can just spend all your time using your slingshot to hit almost anything, even Pac-Man himself, with often hilarious results, and the best part is that you have infinite "lives". There are _so_ many ways to abuse and humiliate the poor guy that there's even a series of (very) old TH-cam videos called "Making Pac-Man Suffer!" that shows most of them. Definitely worth watching if you can handle the old video quality of the mid-2000s.

So people are making the general consensus that SNES looks better and Mega Drive sounds better.
I can't disagree with that. I always thought the SNES version didn't sound that good. The composition and instrument choice is good, but amount of reverb applied is WAY over any SNES game I've heard. Very grating to the ears... However, it looks nice overall.
Meanwhile, the Mega Drive version seems to be missing some details and stuff, but the sound is far more pleasant.

It isn't just because I grew up with the Genesis version, but the Genesis version sounds far better to me, especially for music. It also has Pac-Jr. as well. The music on SNES sounds really weird to me, especially the instrumentation. Pac-Man's voice also sounds really weird on SNES as well.
I will say the SNES version is far more colourful though.
The games run at the same resolution too, which is nice.

It's kind of crazy to me that people are trashing the SNES version a bit. I remember renting both a lot, and knowing that only the SNES version actually came out in Japan, it seems especially evident that the SNES version was the lead platform that the game was originally made for, and the Genesis version is a (very well done) port.
Genesis is clearly missing some features here and there like the music tempo changes based on Pac-Man's mood, iris-in, iris-out on "deaths", Pac-Man's chatter being actual pitch-shifted voice samples instead of synthesizer-voice, and better-looking word balloons at the beginning. If you hadn't played both versions though, you'd never know you were missing anything, and I think they did a great job working within the boundaries of the Genesis' limitations.
As far as I've ever played it, the SNES music always sounds like this -- in music as well as the game itself, they're aiming for a sort of wacky 1920s-30s "check us out, we can pair audio and performed music with our theatrical cartoons now", Silly Symphonies/Merrie Melodies-type of off-kilter old timey cartoon feel with this game. Steamboat Willie and so forth, the same stuff that Cuphead was riffing off of.

The SNES version looks nicer all round (more colours on screen, better colour choices, not stretched, additional window/masking effects in interiors, some Mode 7 scaling on the intro, proper transparency on things like clouds and lasers in later levels, more background layers and extra parallax in some of later levels too, etc), but the Genesis version sounds much better (not like it's playing in some tunnel).

I think you've got those backwards as the PC/Amiga pixel-art games of the time always tended to look visually more dated/limited than the arcades. But, whatever you meant, the SNES version definitely looks better, and in some of the later levels very noticeably so. The SNES version sounds terrible though.

@@inceptional I think he meant by the fact SNES features more vibrant colors and Mega Drive features simpler shading and more muted colors, since arcade games in the late 80s had a lot of games go with muted, simpler colors (Karnov, Forgotten Worlds, Gradius 2, and Twinbee come to mind)

    • @inceptional
      @inceptional 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@solarflare9078 The Genesis has a 9-bit 512-colour master palette. The SNES has a 15-bit 32,768-colour master palette. That's a whopping 64x larger. The Genesis can display a max of 4 bits per pixel as a standard option (16 colours) and the SNES a max of 8 bits per pixel as a standard option (256 colours). That's 16x larger.
The SNES not only has the ability to display more vibrant colours than Genesis but also simpler shading and more muted colours too; it just comes down to what the developer prefers to go with on SNES. That's pretty standard affair given the colour capabilities of these consoles compared to each other. It's also true of most arcades of that era too, which are generally able to display many more and nicer colours than Genesis and often more than SNES too.
In this particular game, I think the SNES colours are generally warmer and nicer and gentler on the eyes while the Genesis colours are often somewhat dull yet harsh and garish, which is the typical result of the SNES being able to display more colours with a much larger colour gamut. Pause the video and jump back and forth between 2:53 and 2:58 or between 5:38 and 5:43 and I think you can clearly see the difference, particularly in things like the sky, the background hills/rocks, the grass and fence there.
The SNES audio is indeed really terrible here though. Although it's certainly capable of far better sound that what they pulled off in this particular game.

SNES wins as Genesis port borked the aspect, music is a bit too harsh and colours to primary. I think that was a choice though because Sega would encourage brighter colours and Nintendo the opposite. 512 (+dark and light variants) still have more subtle greens and yellows than that.
