@@deathshadow660 I've read hundreds of avatar the last airbender fan fictions and honestly comparing that movie to them is just wrong even romance fan fics were better written
Not only did that episode set the tone for the story, it also did one of my favorite things about ATLA: it showed the Avatar State not as heroic, but terrifying.
The reason Aang can always stay positive is because he's essentially a buddhist monk. He can accept the world as is and he can accept when he doesn't have the power to change things. Also, a bit of not-in-the-show trivia: his arrow tattoos symbolize his status as a master airbender at only 12 years old. The kid is a once-in-a-generation genius when it comes to his birth element.
It's as natural to him as breathing. The way he knows what form of airbending to use in situations and almost always using non-lethal airbending (though lets be honest, there's very little of those) and him doing it like the very air is an extension of his body.
emotional carnage is an understatement. there are some episodes in this that give amazing wisdom, sadness, laughs. it’s probably one of if not the best kids shows of all time i’d say
9:46 His mom was killed. His dad left to go to war. He was told it was his responsibility to take care of everyone left behind. Sokka's character arc is a work of genius.
I’ve watched a lot of people react to this show over the last few years…I don’t think there’s been anyone as perfect to see watch this for the first time than you, this is about to be a match made in heaven! Enjoy
Fun fact: Each Nation in this show is based on real cultures. Air Nomads- Tibetan monks Water Tribe- Inuit Earth Kingdom- Chinese and a little bit of Indian Fire Nation- Japanese empire, with the royals being centered in drive and honor, as you just witnessed
I love your reviews at the end of each episode. You're going to love how the show progressively reveals the world building, develops the characters and just makes you fall in love.
SOOOOO EXCITED you're starting this journey!!!! ATLA is firmly in my top 5 favorite shows. A detail not explained in the show; the arrow tattoos Aang has are only given to master airbenders, and Aang was the youngest to ever receive the tattoos.
20:23 each element is dangerous in its own right. Fire: for obvious reasons Earth: again pretty obvious Water: there would be more then just mild discomfort. Imagine being at a beach and you get hit by a decently big wave and it knocks you off your feet, now have someone control that water into a more focused/dense flow, would be like getting hit by a truck or make it thin enough with far greater pressure behind it and now your chopping off limbs. Air: same principle as water. Controlling the pressure of the air you can make a raging tornado or a thin limb chopping blast. Not to mention pulling the air right out of someone’s lungs
To be fair, early episodes haven't really found the tone of the series yet, so it's easy to assume most elements are soft like that. It's not until much later, especially book 3, when you learn to be absolutely terrified by waterbenders
"He's supposed to be this big bad dude"... If you say so 😅 "Why did that hurt to watch?" So.. That's avatar. IMO more kids shows now a days should be like this. It teaches morals and lessons. It teaches you about real life things and emotions, in this fictional world
This show is one of those masterpieces. You think "Oh Nickelodeon show... this will be for kids". This is a once in a lifetime show. The journey and the growth from these characters are PEAK ANIME!
One of the things that make this show so great is that it doesn't talk down to its audience, even though that audience is meant to be children. All the characters have more depth to them than it seems at first glance, and the writers are not afraid of addressing some very heavy topics. Some of the humour may be a little childish at times, but it's a children's show! They also had a plan for the entire story, beginning to end, before they started work on the first episode. They didn't follow that plan exactly, but having it meant they could keep the whole thing very coherent thematically and have the characters grow and evolve in a very believable way. There's a lot of shows written for adults that could learn a few things from how this show was made. The Netflix live action version of Avatar, for a start!
C.S. Lewis said something to the effect of "If children's entertainment can only entertain children, then it's not good entertainment." This is a show that I think is the pinnacle of what he would have wanted for children's entertainment. Compare that to what M. Night Shyamalan said when he was making the live action movie to explain why people didn't like the movie. (I can't find the exact quote, but I remember him saying something to this effect). "You can either make it for adults and throw in a lot of sex and violence, or you can make it for 10 year olds. I chose the latter". This one quote is exhibit A as to why he was the absolute wrong person to be in charge of the project
It's sorta believed that Monk Giyatso killed those firebenders surrounding him by sucking all the air out of the area suffocating all the fires and everyone there trying to protect the temple and others using a move like that was kind of outlawed by the airbenders
I don’t know if you're a fan of Harry Potter, but Jason Isaacs voiced Zhao, who played Lucius Malfoy. Also, this episode shows that even though he’s banished, Zuko has more honor than anyone in the fire nation because Zhao attacked after yielding, a dishonorable thing. Zuko also, in the last episode, Zuko also kept his word when he agreed to leave the Southern Water Tribe alone. And Momo means peaches in Japanese, so Momo is literally named Peaches because he was eating a peach at the end of this episode. And Momo was initially going to be a reincarnated Gyatso but they eventually dropped that idea.
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOO this was the first series I ever got into, being like 7 at the time, and i didnt even realize i was watching the episodes as they were coming out until i was in my 20s. One of the best examples of how kids shows can be for everyone
The intro for the first episode is slightly different from the intro of every other episode. Aang doesn't get cold. They don't explain until much much later but air benders learn a technique to use their breathing to regulate their temperature. Fun fact, Appa and Momo have the same voice actor. He does nearly all the animal noises in the show.
New to the channel, just ended up in my feed cause... avatar. Just watching this video has signed me up to watch the whole thing here. You understand the gravity of the situation. Mentioning that its "just kids". The writing is insane and you can see it just in these episodes. Example from these: Sokka: Fun? You cant fight the fire nation with fun. Aang: You should try it sometime. The next time Aang is seen, he slides in on a penguin and trips Zuko. LITERALLY FIGHTING HIM WITH FUN! You mentioned how silly Zuko got defeated, well.... Aang is having fun! Just simple things like that. There are many more in just these episodes that I could rattle off. Enjoy the ride. I'm jealous you get to experience it for the first time.
I watch a wide smattering of reactors (basically anyone who watches media I truly love), and some drive me kinda nuts but are watchable, whereas some others really seem to care about understanding and appreciating the media they're consuming. This reactor has always been one of the latter, especially when it comes to powerful emotional storytelling. I'm really stoked she's watching this series, and I'm positive you're going to love her reactions :)
Fun fact: The reason Aang isn’t cold in the tundra is because Airbender have the ability to change the temperature of the air around them, so they never get too cold or too warm
Oh yeah, it’s all coming together 🙌 The lore in this show is so good and expertly presented to the audience. Look forward to your questions being answered at exactly the right time. Also keep an eye out for hybrid animals. So far we’ve seen penguins crossed with otters, lemurs with bats (Momo), and bison with manatees (Appa). Some of the later hybrids are more obvious.
This is basically the Bluey effect but back then with a bit of difference since it’s older kids but still. A kid show with that much impact on adult watching, I just love it so much
I was 11 when this show came out and was so hyped for the initial release special, which was the first 2 episodes back to back. I think it was near the finale that I caught a couple re-runs with my dad, and he started getting into it, too. By far, one of both our favorite franchises.
While Avatar the Last Airbender is indeed the best show Nickelodeon has ever made, the best and fleshed out franchise Cartoon Network has ever made is Ben 10 (Classic).
Still hoping that one of these days, it goes back to actually being Cartoon Network and not 'Teen Titans GO and A Few Other Shows We Don't Really Care About Network'.
I still love the fact that Aang recognized Gyatso as the world's greatest Airbender, not because of his combat skill, but because of his baking abilities. Because honestly if you've ever tried baking you've wished that you were an Airbender.
Airbenders control temperature of the air around them so aang literally never wears extra layers of clothing cause he's always using Airbender subconscious to keep body temperature at optimum level
7:42 they don't ever mention this, but Airbenders can control the Air around their bodies naturally allowing them to stay warm in the cold or, cool in the heat, so he doesn't need more clothes than what he is wearing which is more symbolic then practical like the coats sokka and Kamara wear.
16:00 they said in the first intro and Sokka again mentioned in the first episode talking to the kids that all the men left 2 years prior to fight in the war.
They don't really touch on it in ALTA but air-benders (especially masters) can passively maintain control of the air around them, so Aang can dress however he likes in the arctic and not be cold so long as he's conscious.
Book 1 simply establishes main story and moves a little forward with it. The rest is introducing recurring characters who will have a significant impact in later seasons. The trilogy of seasons is LOTR meets Star Wars meets Game of Thrones (in a family friendly way of course)
V this show SHAPED me as a child, yes it's emotionally HEAVY but it helped me to identify my feelings and process them properly. This show is literally the therapy children need as they grow up, it's crazy. It was called too smart for children's television, and I wholeheartedly agree but it was totally necessary.
Appa flies using airbending, the flying bisons are the original airbenders si he controls the air currents arround him just like Aang does to fly with the glider. And in the second episode when Katara freezes the guards she addapts like water when she tries the second time, its a detail I love!!
AtLA is a classic. And don’t listen to the haters, let me preemptively let you know that the sequel series, The Legend of Korra is JUST AS GOOD (it is a hill I will die on).
Oh you're in for a treat! 🙂 You'll laugh, cry, cheer for the villain, and by the 3rd episode will have you emotionally invested in the characters. I can't wait to follow you on this journey. There's a reason it's consistently at the top of nearly every chart for best TV series.
I'M SO STOKED YOU'RE WATCHING THIS! I'm a video binger only (just how my brain works) so I'll be saving this and coming back to watch your reactions a season at a time or so, but I had to pop in to comment that I'm so so happy you're going to watch this show! It's truly, no hyperbole, one of the all-time best sagas ever told, in all of human literature, in any medium. Please watch it at a decent pace so you don't forget things along the way, and please consider making notes about any interesting observations or unresolved loose ends, because there are setups and payoffs ALL over the place, and some of those span nearly from the beginning to the end of the whole series! Pay close attention to small details; a lot of the lore drops are implied through subtext, and there are many visual easter eggs that are only catchable on a second viewing. It's such an amazing story. I truly believe humans will be studying and discussing this story for as long as our species exists and preserves any cultural works. Welcome to the fandom, you will be changed by it!
Zuko IS the primary antagonist of the show, but _not_ necessarily a villain! A great example of a show that demonstrates the difference between the two.
You are in for a ride. One of,if not the best written animated series I've ever seen. The character development is amazing, and the introduction of later characters bring additional depth to the series. Enjoy.😊
Yay!! I’m excited for this! I love this show ❤ You know, the writers made it so that the first word spoken here in the first episode is the word “It’s” & the last word spoken in the last episode is the word “perfect” & it really is!
A lot of work was put into this series. A small example is that each of the bending techniques is based on a real martial arts form. That aside, I have one very important question for you, Vicky: Are you REALLY a GT Racing Ace? 🤔
This family series is a great journey, no matter what your age. Be ready for more. It does a great job of combining lightheartedness with depth and character development.
Sokka: You can't fight firebenders with fun! Aang: *Spends the next 9 months fighting firebenders with fun and winning until the whole fire nation is defeated*
Avatar is a classic masterpiece, I say, not least because it demonstrates that one can make a show which is appropriate for children but which adults can thoroughly enjoy as well. It is wonderful. :)
OMG, I was not expecting this but I am so excited that you are starting your ATLA journey. I first watched this several years ago and it is my favorite animated show ever, it's an insta-click as soon as I see it on a subbed reactor's channel (gone through it with Funny Lil' Gal, Natalie Gold, Gallifrey Gals, Kat & Sonny and many others...) You're not wrong in that it goes pretty hard pretty quick...it deals with some very heavy themes for a kids' show (though for that reason they have to dance around certain things and leave them vague at points). Fair warning...the emotional damage will not be any less after these first three episodes...but it's SO worth it. Looking forward to being along for this ride! I know you're gonna love it 😄
Appa is an Airbender so he doesn't need wings to fly. And Zhao actually has a point when he told Zuko that his father doesn't care for him. I mean he sent his son on a wild hunt for a guy who wasn't seen for 100 years so the Zuko was basically set up to fail which means he was never meant to make it home again.
So excited for you. It may not seem like it in these early episodes, but by the end it really does establish itself as one of the greatest TV shows ever made
This is one of the best shows ever made. Its very well written and has amazing character building. You'll gonna love this show. Oh expect also some emotional moments so tissues are mandatory.

I used to watch this with my kids all the time when they were little. Great show for the whole family.
Enjoy.😊
Fun fact: Jason Isaacs plays commander Zhao. The same actor who played Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter.
Yay!! I’m excited for this! I love this show ❤ You know, the writers made it so that the first word spoken here in the first episode is the word “It’s” & the last word spoken in the last episode is the word “perfect” & it really is!
Im so happy you're starting this. It's my favorite show of all time
A lot of work was put into this series. A small example is that each of the bending techniques is based on a real martial arts form. That aside, I have one very important question for you, Vicky: Are you REALLY a GT Racing Ace? 🤔
Momo is Japanese for peach! So when Momo grabbed the peach from Sokka, that's where Aang got his inspiration to name him Momo 😊
0:31 weirdly enough I was all three 🤣
Avatar is a classic masterpiece, I say, not least because it demonstrates that one can make a show which is appropriate for children but which adults can thoroughly enjoy as well. It is wonderful. :)
Also, for the OG fans, "the worldbuilding is done" she says 😅 she's about to take the master class in "the worldbuilding is done"
One of my only 10/10 shows of all time. I got my mother to re-watch it with me and she got HOOKED. Truly grateful for that experience.
Betcha 20 bucks she will have an Appa stuffed animal by the end of the season!
OMG, I was not expecting this but I am so excited that you are starting your ATLA journey. I first watched this several years ago and it is my favorite animated show ever, it's an insta-click as soon as I see it on a subbed reactor's channel (gone through it with Funny Lil' Gal, Natalie Gold, Gallifrey Gals, Kat & Sonny and many others...)
You're not wrong in that it goes pretty hard pretty quick...it deals with some very heavy themes for a kids' show (though for that reason they have to dance around certain things and leave them vague at points). Fair warning...the emotional damage will not be any less after these first three episodes...but it's SO worth it. Looking forward to being along for this ride! I know you're gonna love it 😄
Quite possibly my favorite show of all time. Getting a tattoo for it and everything dead center of my back. You're going to love it
To correct your remark at 4:58, Aang is 12, Katara is 14, Sokka is 15, and Zuko is 16.
You want trauma? Wait till season 2
Leaves from the vine
Falling so slow
Like fragile tiny shells
Drifting in the foam
😢🥹😭😖😖
Shed a few everytime
So excited for you. It may not seem like it in these early episodes, but by the end it really does establish itself as one of the greatest TV shows ever made
This is one of the best shows ever made. Its very well written and has amazing character building. You'll gonna love this show. Oh expect also some emotional moments so tissues are mandatory.
