I have a cat name Villain that absolutely hates me playing the flute. She runs and hides. Another cat I have, LBB, hates the piccolo. He will jump up in my lap and push the piccolo away from my mouth. Fur babies are so much fun to practice with.
I would love to see a video of that...hahhahahaha...So sweet. They really are such special practice friends. My cat enjoys watching me practice and just closes her ears when it gets too high!
.I started last year studying music and I chose to play with the flute and I find it so amazing and I read about it too and when my teacher started to teach me about how< to use flute, I never thought where I can breathe and stuff, she didn't teach me tho it's an important thing, when one of the students saw me playing a classic song while I wasn't holding my breathe well, so thanks to you and other TH-camrs I can play much better and I'll make these exercises everyday, thanks for sharing your information with us!
Hi, yet another very nice video, thanks ! My son's trumpet teacher used to teach him, right on his beginners' years, to fully exhale before the very first air intake (he had an exhale countdown + 1 beat inhale, and then play). I found it very smart to let the students get a proper natural intake, like you demonstrate in this video. Let's say, in a 4/4 bar you would have 3 beats out, 1 beat in and play. Cheers !
The hand in front of the mouth is actually to check the sound of the breathing. So if you breath in with your hand like this, you can hear if your lips, throat or teeth are to closed up. You have a nice open mouth in a round/O shape and it should sound like a nice O but made out of air (and not vocal chords obviously). And then you put the palm of you hand in front of your mouth a little bit further to check if your flow is even when your breathe out. I don't know if it makes sense through a comment, but the exercice is mostly to be able to take good breath in (but don't forget to first fill up your tummy and then the chest) and have a good flow in and out...And then you can inhale for 4 beats, then out for 4 beats (or seconds, but you can accelerate or decelerate to get different benefits from this exercice) a few times, then breathe in 4 beats and exhale 3 (then 2 then 1) and then you can do the opposite so to inhale 4 times exhale 4, inhale 3 exhale 4, inhale 2 exhale 4 etc always a few times and then you can match the two so inhale 4 exhale 4 inhale 3 exhale 3 etc and when you inhale 1 beat and exhale 1 beat you try to go for as long as you can, until you get dizzy and when you get dizzy you keep on going by staying relaxed and focus (don't accelerate or panic) and then one last breathe in and you are done... If that makes sense.
When I was in high school, my flute teacher was ALWAY on my case for not breathing with my diaphragm. Then at some point she started making me start the lesson with a breathing exercise. She would have me lay on my back. She would place some books on my tummy & I had to raise & lower the books with my breathing. It was an odd exercise but! It eventually stuck. lol
I have a question( btw I like these exercises I have used them and they helped) my band director gets made at us because there is a song called Snowfall by Chris M. Bernotas and this song is a really smooth song but he doesnt want us to breathe at the end of the measures because it choppes up the music, and he says we should "breathe between slurs if wr have to but not at the end of the measure" what do you advise me that you think might help. Please I really need someones help someone more experienced than I am at least
Hey Dana. thank you for your question. I would have to agree with your band director on this one. Very often we need to break slurs in order to keep the musical line rather than follow what composers have written. Honestly, some composers just don't understand that we need to BREATHE and some don't understand where we should and can breathe. Many musicians don't realize that as flutists we lose most of our air over the top of the instrument (60-70%!) while the others have all the air going directly into the instrument. If you send me a picture of the score via my Facebook page I could maybe help you find some good breathing spots :)
Make sure you are not pushing out your stomach but just letting it naturally expand. The stomach does sometimes make noise, weirdly when we relax apparently. Another suggestion would be to just pay attention to when it makes those noises. All the time? Or only right after eating or when your stomach is quite empty. Perhaps that could be the key too. Hope that helps a bit!
@@TheFlutePractice even if i eat it after some minutes it will start again with the noises. maybe it happens cause im a little skiny? however thank you for the explanation
Hi to you, please excuse me i can't find your name. I have found your lesson really helpful, as i am wanting to play the flute with out the sound of taking a breath. I'm really grateful for tips on this. Thanks.
I watched some of your videos on you tube. You have all the ingredients to be a great teacher. Please cut down on jokes and give us a variety of examples on the same subject. I depend on your online instructions, since my beginning classes were interrupted by covid 19 circumstances. In case you want fun and comedy, take my instrumental background, which turned into a joke 1)I could no longer practice trombone, since the neighbor rang the bell every five minutes. 2) every time i took out my violin, my grandmother was bitterly crying. Thanks God , she was deaf, yet the violin reminded her of her first serenade. 3) when i played the accordion, the dog was hauling, like a wolf. It was funny at the beginning annoying as time went bye. Now here comes the flute, i love it , took 8 classes before the community music center closed on me due to this latest pandemic. So you are my last chance to continue my studies, teach us???!!!
this vid: "its not an exact science!" also this vid: "take 3/4 of your breath, then breath out 1/2 of that and breath in 12/13 of your lung capacity, divide by pie and you can almost start with the excercise!"
I justed started playing the flute Friday and and I am already good at it Thansk to you

The drinking in the air tip completely clicks for me! Many, many thanks :D

Thank you very much for all the lessons you have posted. I appreciate them.
awesome
Awww, so cute. Would love to see her in all your future videos!
I hope she will join us some more in future. I often post pictures on Instagram of her as well if you want to follow there too :)
That was a very useful (and enjoyable) video!!! Let's hope Roxy doesn't start howling.....
I really hope so too...She seems to be getting used to it slowly...the filming, playing and not having all the attention...tough dog lessons

I’m still having problems practicing the circular breathing can you go into a lot more detail I’m not quite sure I understand it completely.

❤ Great lesson! ❤️😮💨🫁😅
The reason why I’m asking about circular breathing is whenever I practice the skills I run out of breath a lot and I get extremely dizzy.
What about circular breathing?
David B I have done a bit but I am not very good at it! Maybe I need to spend some time practicing and learning and then doing a video on it 🤗
im light headed
I'm still getting used to breathing differently while playing, but I'm getting there!
You could also breath with a metronome 25% or 1/4 = beat 1 50% or 2/4 = beat 2 75% or 3/4 = beat 3 and 100% or 4/4 = beat 4 :-)

I have a pinscher and she starts to howl, bark and cry when I start playing and I can't practice at home😓her name is Sereia (Mermaid in english)
Ahhhh...so sweet! But frustrating that you cannot practice at home...I hope Roxy will let me practice :/
