During Real Progress with Dr. Adel, Dr. Adel Najdowski shares information about strenghtening receptive and expressive language skills in children with ASD. How do you know where your child's skills are in these areas and how do you strengthen them? Dr. Adel makes it clear that progress can be made in these areas.

My oldest son has mixed receptive and expressive language disorder. For the life of me I could not figure out how all the other kids his age were learning to talk so easily. My daughter is able to learn to talk normally, it really is like "magic" the way neurotypical children pick up on language skills. For my son, every single vocabulary word must be taught and practiced over and over again, almost like how you would expect to be taught math or something more complicated.

I learned that I had expressive language as an adult. My purpose is to help people who have had trouble talking like me because I know how hard it is. I have done some videos on my channel about the subject to show an example of someone who has worked through it the best they can.

I like the examples they gave of expressive and receptive language but I also wish they mentioned that they’re both forms of spoken language because they both impact a child’s ability to speak (or vocalize).

Same! I’m not sure if this still counts that I have it? But I found some papers showing I was diagnosed in kindergarten, that I had ‘mild-moderate receptive and expressive language impairment”. Could this be the reason I’m a slower worker than other students and a slower learner (slower at processing information*)?
I remember in 2nd grade, my classroom teacher yelled at me this one time because I didn’t know how to come up with a RESOLUTION to a story. I couldn’t understand what the hell a resolution was, until probably late 3rd grade/early 4th grade. Alongside with that, I was eventually put into tutoring for a year - a waste of money; for a year, I was taught 4-5th grade work when I was only 3rd. Due to my case of receptive/expressive-lang. disorder, I was unable to understand anything said by the teachers...

You may not read this , but as a 13 year old growing up with both disorders I may be able to explain. A receptive disorder causes you to misinterpret information a lot ,and more than others. And a expressive disorder causes you to not being able to put your thoughts into sentences. Which can cause run on sentences , words being mixed up like get and got ( I used to do). However these disorders can pull your child back it is possible to improve and excel based on my own experience. Thank you have a good day :)
