Hardly surprising given the outright brutality in most of the world at the time. Every "atrocity" the pirates committed was being done far worse and on a much larger scale by the governments of the period.
It still happens today in 2024. The Earth has never known peace while humans walk it's surface. We still slaughter each other over made up stories and the fiction of 'gawd' . The invention of religion doomed our evolution, and now we're stuck with it.
2:15 The Buccaneers is the mascot for Charleston Southern University. I worked there as a Career Counselor after graduating from the Master's Program at the University of Missouri.
Wow, a whole pirate video and not a single mention of Blackbeard besides some drawings. That's not a criticism. I'm legitimately impressed. You had some pirates here I've never even heard of, and managed to avoid some of the more popular names like Captain Kidd, Anne Bonnie, and Charles Vane. All too often I see these pirate videos and they fall into covering the same handful of people. I'd like to see even more deep cuts like this in the future.
Eating ANOTHER Weird History meal! Eating Chocolate Marshmallow Mateys cereal*†...while watching this Weird History video! The pirate-themed cereal reminds me of awesome special Garfield's Halloween Adventure! * Inspired by the Weird History videos about cereal and Halloween. † I was Orangebeard, Garfield's Halloween costume, for one Halloween in the 80s.
The one of lolonay when they failed to take a city, and in retreat were killed by indigenous people would make a great time period horror, a pirate horror movie
The most famous victim of pirates was a 25-year-old Julius Caesar. Young JC was taken as a hostage, but proved himself a valuable ransom. He spent time charming them with poetry and music, and the captain gave him safe passage home. He then returned and murdered them all. When his former captor asked why, Caesar simply replied “you are cut-throats, now I shall cut yours”. Granted, this all comes from Caesar’s own account, so take it as you will.
1:14 Speaking of Raiders, the only NFL jersey I ever owned was that of Tim Brown, the star receiver of the Oakland Raiders. He also graduated as a sociology major. I also dressed up as him for Halloween in 2001.
1:14 Tom Brady now owns part of the NFL team the Raiders. They were the only NFL team that ever considered to be my favorite until they were demolished by the Buccaneers in 2003 Super Bowl, at which I concluded that they would never win the Super Bowl again (21 years later I am 100% right about that).
I hate to be that guy, but actually pirates go waaaaaaay back. Vikings were technically pirates and the ancient Greeks and Romans fought against an group known as the Sea People. So the Golden Age was late in the days of Pirates. Even today Somalia has several Pirate groups.
Not other bad boys but I have a curiosity. Southern plantation mansions would name their homes - like Tara from the novel and movie Gone with the Wind. Who else gave names to their mansions? Any New Englanders? Midwesterners?
According to one of my greatgrandmothers (a Morgan - _not_ an uncommon name!), Capt. Henry Morgan is one of my ancestors - on the side, an uncle of numerous "greats". Tbh, it's not a story we are either quick to believe nor do we want to!
Hell, there’s probably some instances of Americans being tried for piracy. All they would have to do is use a boat to commit a property crime on or near the water.
Not all Hollywood movies got it wrong, keelhauling was shown in the 1962 Mutiny on the Bounty. How did you not know that? th-cam.com/video/Qw5sAgBsGg8/w-d-xo.html
Worth pointing out though that Pirates often lived a more democratic society than others at the time, and were actually comparatively progressive for the time about things like gender roles/equality. Not saying they weren’t brutal murdering criminals, but gotta give credit where it’s due
When I picture pirates. I picture men with badges and uniforms, and a lot of them drive around with flashing blue lights on their vehicles with sirens. They will pull you over if they perceive you doing anything they like so they can extort money out of you. They won't kill you unless you resist them. As long as you stay calm and don't do anything to scare or offend them. They will let you live with a smile on their face. People talk about pirates like they are a thing of the past, but I at least see a few of them most days.
The decline in pirates is alarming. Global climate change directly tracks the decline The world needs more pirates now to save us from climate collapse
Even Neal DeGrass Tyson, a well- proclaimed atheist, uses B.C. and A.D. as a means of giving credit to the Gregorian monks who created the most accurate calendar ever devised. Yes, let's keep using B.C. and A.D.
There are a bunch of other religions in the world - millions of people who were forced to use the Christian calendar via unChristian conquest, colonialism, subjugation and exploitation. C.E. is an euphemism. Deal with it.
It's means before Christ yes, as a well know and understood way to measure time I'm not against keeping it, however Christianity is false and it's objectively ridiculous to try and force your false Jewish Messiah godman on to non christian people
Please do a video on how many times former U.S. Presidents publicly talked about other mens' penises, starting with the very, very weird one who did it yesterday. Might be a short video.
Their breath must have killed a FEW people, at least.
LATER Rob!
Body odor too

Look up "scurvy gums" 😬😬💔💔
Blahahahhaha!!! I was thinking the same thing!!! LOL. ✌️
This guy could read the phonebook and I'd listen on repeat

Same lol. His voice is like home
Doing that might make you sound like him and remember alotta phone numbers (and names) 😅😂😅😂😅😂😅😂
In the same game as Morgan Freeman and William Shatner. I listen to them on Netflix to fall asleep at night
This guy, the guy on nutty productions, and Simon Whistler are my favorites.

Truuuuuue
Pirates only seem fun in the 1700s. Any time they are modern day, it is just gangsters with boats.
That's what modern pirates are?
@@blunderingfoolyup. Terrorizers
Somalians are not gangsters
No that is not what modern pirates are. Look up the definition of a pirate and look up the definition of a gangster It is not the same
@@blunderingfool dont kill my free speech commie!!
I'm going to be a pirate too and I'm starting by drinking rum at 10am tomorrow morning, Arrrrrr!
Enjoyed hearing about how real pirates were like compared to the fictional depictions we usually see
This is my new comfort show.
Very educational and entertaining. I have not heard of some of these pirates.and their interesting stories. Thanks so much for posting.

The most successful pirates were the ones that became politicians. .

i’ve been playing sea of thieves for like a month straight now and I saw pirate and I clicked
The one of lolonay when they failed to take a city, and in retreat were killed by indigenous people would make a great time period horror, a pirate horror movie
Maybe the real pirates were the friends we made along the way.
The Dutch Navy didn’t have soldiers, they had sailors and marines. Soldiers don’t typically fight at sea.
Yay! The original narrator is back!
nice video, love it

Alestorm taught me about keel hauling 😅🤘
0:01 Johnny Depp KILLED IT as Jack Sparrow, what amazing acting!
Weird history knows the exact location of Davy Jones's locker
The most fun novels i have read about pirates , were the Ned Yorke series written by Dudley Pope . Buccaneer, Admiral, Galleon and Corsair
No Edward Teach, Blackbeard?
Bet that was some very heavy liquor they were drinking compared to whats bought in stores today.
gnarly. thank you
My Uncle Danny is a booty pirate

autism ?
I think of this through Unknown5 and True Caribbean Pirates.
Q. Why are Pirates called 'Pirates'?
A. No one knows, they just arrrrrgh..
Now, I just want to listen to some Alestorm..
When eating a heart doesn't put you up the list, it's rough.
Interesting video, but the music is a bit loud. Makes it difficult to understand the narrator.
It never occurred to me that Captain Morgan has a first name.
Nice
1:04 That is an engraving of Anne Bonny, one of the few recorded female pirates in history.
oh wow, i didnt know there were more female pirates. thanks for the fact man ❤
"The Pirate's life is just the life forrr yoouuuu....
Yo ho ho And a bottle of rum!"
The best narrator for this show😀👍

Chief is spelled wrong on the door and that bothers me
I wonder whether anyone suffered from PTSD after they retired from Piracy...,
The island is Española. Haití and the Dominican Republic are both countries on the island.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean Franchise will forever be The GOAT
Did any of them use a devil fruit?
What no “parlay?”
I went to a produce stand and noticed that the farmer wanted $9 for six ears of corn. I talked him down to a buck on ear.
What did the old pirate say on his birthday?
"Aye matey!"
What's a pirate's favorite clothing pattern?
"Arrrrgyle."
Last time I was this early I spent a month in the NICU.
Not other bad boys but I have a curiosity. Southern plantation mansions would name their homes - like Tara from the novel and movie Gone with the Wind. Who else gave names to their mansions? Any New Englanders?

Buccaneer? That's a hell of a price for corn.
