Thermal Performance on different types of Insulated Glass Units

- See the difference that the right kind of glass can make in keeping you home the right temperature.
In this video we test clear single pane glass, clear double pane glass, double pane glass with Lowe and Argon Gas, and triple pane with Lowe and Argon Gas.
Glass results are shown with a temperature swing of approximately 20 degrees Fahrenheit on the inside of the freezer and 75 degrees Fahrenheit on the outside of the freezer.
That’s the best most logical explanation of advantages between single, double or triple pane glass systems. Great video!!

Most window manufacturers buy the same glass from Cardinal Glass Industries, what matters the most is the frame that’s holding the glass and how much it expands and contracts in the hot/cold climates, the goal should be to get the fames to match the glass expansion and contractions. Also most of these TH-cam videos are almost always vinyl which is fine for decay and insulation but horrible for expansion and contraction, vinyl expands at 7x the rate of the glass so don’t let sales reps pushing vinyl say otherwise, it’s a fact...but it’s cheap so consumers fall for it based on dollars.
Just as important is that vinyl window manufacturers only buy the low-e coated glass in single sheets and then try and seal the double pane windows themselves with one of two materials, non-metallic foam or aluminum spacers with a single screw holding in the denser argon gas. Cardinal Glass moved on from these spacers back in 1993 and onto insulated glass using stainless steel that only has one seam that gets welded but this costs more so vinyl and fiberglass window manufacturers won’t purchase them this way to keep costs down and consumers wouldn’t know otherwise. I sell windows if folks can’t tell and I sell a premium product but I spend most of my time informing myself with research on things like this since there is so much disinformation out there only to garner the sale.

Not really actually. Some use Guardian glass and some still use PPG. Depending on the area.

An old, but excellent video! I have been trying to get information like this from various window suppliers and local dealers to find out how my current windows are performing. I currently have double pane, no gas, and the inner panel is removeable to access the blind between the panes. With an outside temp or 18F, inside temp of 69F, my windows read 53F and with the inner blinds closed, they read 56F. So basically the same results as the video.
I bought a good quality double pane low-e window and the inside temperature in NC winter is basically the same as the thermostat setting.
Very good demo, would also be interesting to know about the sound reduction between the different options.
Triple pane can't be insulated as double.

Very cool demo. You could do a similar freezer test to compare between krypton and argon gases.
The difference is Superman isn't affected by argon.

What does laminated glass give you
I have a project where the seals in all the themopane units have failed
There are no weep holes for moisture escape and the spacers have clearly broken down 5 year old windows seals started going after 2 years that i notices now at 5 yrs they are all gone
80’ by 10ft high windows sizes 4x6 2 x4 and 4 x8 door sections

At 17 Def F (-8 C) my double pane , argon filled window pane has measured between 37F (3C) and 45F (7 C) while room temperature and humidity are 68F (20 C) and 39% respectively - I am using humidifier to protect the hard wood floor. Based on your video, the measured temperature pane readings are way too low. There is very little if any "fog" between the two window panes. Theoretically, the window should be functioning normally, but it is not. Can you please comment what the problem might be? Thank you! Sandy

It is a great solution for a day time privacy, while still taking advantage of natural light

In the winter we get about -15 degrees Farenheit snowing etc we are planning on building a house where the first floor is all glass wall but a part where indoor swimming pool is can be opened up leading to the outside where we can entertain kids pool parties etc in summertime.. which type of glass would suit our need best and can it be built where it can slide open etc
When you have those big temperature differences between inside and outside of a house. Its most important to look at the U-Factor of the whole window or door. If you search on Google for "Most Energy Efficient Windows" and go to the EnergyStar.gov page that shows up, you will have a good short list for some of the most energy efficient window options available in the US. I'm not sure where to point you if you are outside of the US. If you are looking into a sliding option, you will also want to pay attention to how heavy the glass feels. Sometimes triple pane glass can make the door or sliding window a lot heavier and therefore harder to open.

Is there gas in between the panes in the triple glazed unit?
Unfortunately I live in a very loud street , So I had to opt for a double pane 1watt emittance , but I could have went for 0.5 if not sound proofed.
Better than mine. I have double pane impact glass with SGP interlayer with argon gas and if it’s 87 outside it’s 87 inside and the Air space is reading 78.

How about double glazed with argon low e2 and laminated? Where would this fit in your comparison of types of glass to keep the room temperature against cold outside temperatures?
lamination makes no difference in glass energy performance.

Where did you get the freezer from?
4-degree difference between the triple pane low E and the double pane low E. But the triple pane is almost twice the cost of the double. Is that difference really worth the cost?
Depending on your climate and the cost it might not be worth it. I know in our area the cost of triple pane is only about 5% higher than double pane. Depending on the sales guy that comes with the product he might try convincing you that its almost double the cost. If you live in a warmer climate, even that 5% cost difference might not be worth it as you would be more concerned with solar heat gain. In other climates, further from the equator, triple pane glass has become the standard.
the difference was closer to 8 degrees. I would consider that depending on the price increase, but that is actually pretty good.
Very little different in U-value of between Tripleglazed units and standard double glazed units with Low E insulated Glass Sealed units with Warm edge spacer bar Plus Argon Gas is both units are total thickness of 28mm. Tripleglazed units with Warm edge spacer bar Plus Argon Gas Units must be no less than 40mm for maximum insulation as it's a greater cavity space with more gas between and also offer huge acoustic sound insulation.
Could say poor value in terms of financial cost .
You can also have 2 panes of Low E glass for further and better Insulation and get down as low as 0.7 pending on gas inserted between the panes like krypton/ Zenith . Spacer bars must be thermal foam type and not the common Aluminium spacer bar as it highly conductive to form condensation around the edge of units .
Iv all of home in triple glaze then 1 double glazed window on side of home with room ,,,,,now on a cold day or night u can see the frost on the double one with the gas inside, so that's doing its job keep heat in .now rest of home is quite but no frost on outside and seems like heat gets out as rooms be cold ?????
How does a single pane of laminated glass compare in your testing
Unfortunately we did not test any single pane of laminate glass. I would guess that it would perform slightly better than the regular pane of glass, but not better than the double pane piece of glass since the dead air space is a big part of what makes the glass more thermally efficient.
laminated glass performance is going to be pretty much identical to a sheet of single pane at the same overall thickness.
What the number of low e ( for example =180 or 272)
the first (one digit) number is the number of layers of silver in the coating stack. The second (two digit) number is the visible light transmission through the glass and coating.
