I love the effort put in to explaining away different writer’s inconsistencies over the years. The shields are there or not depending on its convenient for the script. All there is to it
That's the fundamental explanation for the inconsistency, but it isn't all there is to it. The decision to depict Daleks without shields for script reasons creates avenues for speculation as to the in-universe explanation for the lack of shields
I'm convinced both sides slightly devolved technologically after the Timewar due to a lack of resources and the deaths of scientists and countless members of both races, resulting in a loss of knowledge. This is my headcannon for why the Daleks seem weaker post Series 3 and why the Master was so easily able to kill the Time lords.
That makes a lot of sense, especially for the Time Lords. Rassilon's traditionalist dogma and despotic totalitarian rule may have 'helped' Gallifrey during the Time War, but it would have been terrible for the planet in peacetime. That's why I have no doubt that there are other Time Lords scattered across the universe, like Romana, Narvin, Flavia or Susan, who were disgusted with Rassilon's reign and left the homeworld before the Master destroyed it. As for the Daleks, I think the answer is more simple. They did away with their shields because they simply didn't need them anymore. Sort of like how modern navy vessels have fewer individual guns than historic warships - their resources are focused on other, more important technologies than just guns, guns, guns. Same with the Daleks - now that they're not fighting a Time War anymore, they don't need a super-overpowered shield in order to be the most powerful thing on the battlefield, so they don't waste resources fitting every lowly drone with one
@@dalekbumps I agree, it makes sense. I think there are different versions of the Time War era casing too featured in multiple post series 4 episodes. Especially with the post Nightmare of Silver Cybermen having eliminated their gold weakness, being capable of flight, FTE speed and adapting to superior firepower.
The shield also doesn't really make sense against humans since it's weak to being overwhelmed and there are tons of human weapons that just throw loads of lead down range. It's probably way more effective against energy weapons while the armor is perfectly fine against kinetic threats.
@dalekbumps can you do a video on who'd win between a fight between the Daleks and the 1953 film Martians? Both use protective blisters and energy weopens.

The Daleks in Stolen Earth/Journey's End definitely don't have shields, and the Daleks from Into the Dalek don't either, as the lasers fired by the Arsitotle crew hit the casing, and there's even a bit where one of the Daleks explodes after being hit by concentrated fire
@dalekbumps But didn't the metacrisis doctor blow up the daleks by increasing dalekaniun fields (dalek shields) at the climax? Meaning they did have shields? I think RTD included bullets bouncing off casings as a quicker way of showing the Daleks are bulletproof without dedicating 10 seconds to a close-up of the bullets dissolving in the air & a side character exclaiming "bullets don't work".
@@xXSwaghetti.YoloneseXx-uf2bb as for the second point about the slow-mo - in 'Dalek' and 'Parting of the Ways' there are many scenes where characters shoot at Daleks and there isn't a slow-motion effect, but there isn't a ricochet effect either - the bullets simply disappear. I'm fairly certain that after the deaths of Daleks Thay and Jast in Evolution of the Daleks, we never see Dalek shields appear again as the Cult of Skaro were the last of the Time War Daleks. Davros' New Empire and all Daleks seen after that are post-Time War Daleks, all of whom lack shields, even the ones that use the bronze design
@dalekbumps Interesting, appreciate the discussion - imo I think I agree with your point that dalek arrogance means they don't activate shiels (unless they know its necessary). Reminds me of how Dalek guns use just enough power to kill, but not to much, so they can kill slowly & savour it.
I have a question I know the Timelords attempted to stop the creation of the Daleks many times by travelling to the past, leading to the skaro degradations however did they ever send one of their own back to gallifrey to inform the then Timelords where they could launch a real time conventional military attack on Skaro before the Daleks had the capability to leave the planet and when they numbered less than a hundred? I admit my knowledge of the rules of time travel is limited and on time travel wars is even less but real time actions seem to be more permanent in the time stream than time travel attacks as the various times the Daleks invaded earth only to be forgotten by most of the population till the then real time Daleks invaded in the 22nd century shows.
@@ryancarter1080 Good question - there's some discrepancy in the lore surrounding the leadup to the Time War but as I understand it, the Time Lords didn't have a military during the timespan of Classic Who, aside from small detachments of security staff like the Chancellory Guard. There hadn't been a military threat to Gallifrey since the Dark Times, which is part of the reason why they were so worried about the Daleks. There aren't many concrete details on the precise history of the early phases of the Time War (hopefully Big Finish will elaborate more on that in the 8th Doctor & Liv & Helen audios that are still ongoing - they recently had one where the 8th Doctor encounters the Time War design of Dalek for the first time, so it seems like they might be heading in that direction) but from what we can infer from the 8th Doctor Time War audios, the Daleks sprung the war on the Time Lords who then had to scramble to assemble a military to counter them. I'd recommend listening to the 6th Doctor audio story 'The Apocalypse Element', it features a very early incursion into Gallifrey conducted by the Daleks, and it paints a great picture of the state Gallifrey was in before the war and how woefully unprepared they were for the tenacity and resourcefulness of the Dalek Empire in that era. Basically, most high-ranking Time Lords were either preoccupied with internal disputes or afflicted with the dogmatic belief that interference in the goings-on of the wider universe was beneath them, and that no other civilisation had the power to contend with them, so they are caught completely off-guard when the Daleks conduct a surprise attack. Presumably the Time Lord who gives the 4th Doctor his mission in Genesis of the Daleks was one of the few Time Lords of that era who truly recognised and understood the threat of the Daleks, possibly a member of the Celestial Intervention Agency acting outside the purview of the High Council
@@dalekbumps Thanks for answering and just to ask have you done a video on the Skaro Degradations yet since they are a subset of Daleks cause I am curious how they weren't considered impure enough to be exterminated by the other daleks

I hope the next Daleks don’t actually use force fields and have a greater feeling of reality, like we really see as some Daleks have dents and scratches etc
Great video explaining about the dalek forcefield, do you think sometime in the future, Cybermen might finally be able to produce anti Dalekanium weapons, what do you think?
The forcefield disappearing, the shoulder mid section no longer rotating, no more temporal shift, the removal of weathering from the props, the downfall of the Daleks in NuWho and honestly it's all down to laziness. Much easier to put bullet bouncing effects or sparks when Daleks get hit rather than a forcefield animation.
There's no way that's true. The forcefield was without a doubt an easy way to justify the lack of impact sparks and meant that firearms effects required way less SFX work since literally half of the work was gone. The removal of the force field probably was motivated by a desire to return to practical effects that have more impact.
I LOVE the fact that Nu-Who added teh Dalek Force Field... As it was something that Terry Nation himself had said Daleks did have ... And it was even addressed in one of the Short Lived DALEK ANNUALS released by Fleetway Publishing in the UK. Unfortunately, While I can find Images and Scans on Google... I dont have the Books... And teh scans out here are just the main picture which like a "Anatomy Book" has a cutaway that lists the different parts of a Dalek... So, the actual details of their force field as written by Nation are lost to time! Thats also where the idea comes from that the Dalek Bulbs on their domes are also, Like the Eyestalks... A Weakness! Of course in reality they are there so that the Cast and Crew could discern which Dalek was actually speaking, But Terry Nation fleshed it out more and made them "Heat Dissipaters" - The Internal Systems of a Dalek produce a lot of heat, so even Speaking can COOK a Dalek in its shell... So teh Bulbs expel that excess heat! Smash Them... Cripple or even KILL a Dalek! But that's NATIONS CANON... Who knows if we will ever see it added to Doctor Who properly! (Dont know why not... Other than creating a few continuity errors with Classic Who, They have used many other touches that Nation added himself... Including Dalek Levitation... Dalek Hover Craft... )
I think the daleks removing the shields has once again to do with their arrogance and superiority complex. Basically showing their enemies: "hey we dont need shields because your weapons are that useless"
Spoilers ahead, you have been warned! .... I cant wait for you to hear Victory of the Doctor from Big finish. It has put paid to alot of paradigm theories you've mentioned before. With no signs of a civil war with davros, but it is the definitive ending of the paradigm, before the events of time of the doctor. Proving the regeneration energy did not destroy the paradigm. Instead the paradigm and the parliament launch an audacious scheme to conquer the entire universe. The eleventh doctor uses something called the Darinthian blight to destroy every paradigm dalek and the parliament including the prime minister. It also explains the eternals function at last. So the paradigm finally have their ending and its a doozy. Very dalek heavy and cool. There is a line hinting how the daleks survived after this though and why we only really see bronze nsds from this point (barring witches familiar) cant wait for you to do a video on it!
The logic from the Daleks perspective probably is that the shield technology is too important to risk falling into the hands of other species so they got rid of it. During the Time War this wasn't a concern because the Time Lords are already advanced enough that this wouldn't matter, plus in a sense the war was decided quickly. However in the rest of the universe because of time travel stuff you might end up with a lone Dalek getting ambushed and then a less advanced species manages to reverse engineer the shield technology before a large invasion force could arrive. Also the shield arguably isn't particularly useful against humans, from cluster munitions to cannister shot and extremely high rate of fire autocannons humans have plenty of weapons that can probably overwhelm the shields. This means that the shields basically only provides useful protection against human soldiers but the regular armor already did that just fine. Basically the shield doesn't provide any extra real protection, without the shield humans would still have to bring out a vehicle like a tank or an airstrike to fight a dalek and the shueld doesn't actually meaningfully protect against those types of threat. This is the same logic used in armoring real world vehicles, it only makes sense to add armor if it protects the vehicle against a new threat, if an APC can survive small arms fire then adding armor only makes sense if you add enough armor to protect against .50 cal machine guns, if you don't add enough armor to meet that threshold then you're just carrying around pointless weight. For the daleks this would be even worse since they both have to carry the weight of the shield and the extra generation capacity needed to power it. In the Time Wars this did make sense since it enabled a single Dalek to stand up to a single Time Lord soldier. That being said I thought the shield was super cool and helped make the Daleks seem more intimidating in the modern day, though it also seemed kinda bullshit at times, I think a less arbritary protection mechanism could have been found. I'm guessing it was abandoned out of a desire to return to practical effects.
I prefer daleks that dont use sheilds, it makes them look stronger and more fearless to their enemies And watching hundreds of bullets bouncing off the casing is just satisfying, watch the dr who anime to see what i mean
Power is one idea, The other maybe they 'lost' the technology post time war... or couldnt recreate it. I liked the concept as without it , the daleks tended to be almost literal pushovers.
I perfer the shield cause of its effectiveness its possible that it was removed due to time war daleks being impure so the new dalek paradime fazed it out.
IMO Dalek force fields made them Too Overpowered. at that point, why is anyone trying to fight the daleks if you don't have a decent enough chance of stopping them. i'm glad they got phased out because man oh man did it make dalek v human/alien combat boring.

I think RTD included bullets bouncing off casings as a quicker way of showing the Daleks are bulletproof without dedicating 10 seconds to a close-up of the bullets dissolving in the air & a side character exclaiming "bullets don't work".
@@xXSwaghetti.YoloneseXx-uf2bb the metacrisis doctor says "dalekanium power feeds, blasting them back" - whatever that means!
Whai are you youzing transformers 2007 Nintendo DS music for this wideo
@@ryancarter1080 I haven't done a video on the Skaro Degradations yet, but its on my list - to be honest, it's an area of Dalek lore that I'm not too familiar with so I'll need to do some research and possibly re-read the Engines of War novel in preparation
@@dalekbumps Not to surprising there's literally only one line about them in the show and it was just a mention alongside the nightmare child. No idea how much if any actual information exists about them in the written versions of doctor who
Uhh Thats the entire story literally of the tom baker 'genesis of the daleks' episode, where tom in a stupid fit of 70s antio-war sentiment refuises to destroy them (only retard their progress) , cause they caused other races to band together..... he was sent ther by the c.i.a (celestial intelligence agency) of the timelords.
I hope the next Daleks don’t actually use force fields and have a greater feeling of reality, like we really see as some Daleks have dents and scratches etc
How many dalek variants are there?
I watched every dalek episode and counted at least thirty daleks
There's plenty in the show alone, but if you count the comics and audios there are over a hundred
Tons thousands of daleks
Great video explaining about the dalek forcefield, do you think sometime in the future, Cybermen might finally be able to produce anti Dalekanium weapons, what do you think?
The forcefield disappearing, the shoulder mid section no longer rotating, no more temporal shift, the removal of weathering from the props, the downfall of the Daleks in NuWho and honestly it's all down to laziness. Much easier to put bullet bouncing effects or sparks when Daleks get hit rather than a forcefield animation.
The forcefield effect was only shown in slow motion, as it's too quick to see otherwise, so they didn't even need to show it all the time.
There's no way that's true. The forcefield was without a doubt an easy way to justify the lack of impact sparks and meant that firearms effects required way less SFX work since literally half of the work was gone. The removal of the force field probably was motivated by a desire to return to practical effects that have more impact.
Do a video on supreme imperial daleks please 🙏 ❤
Dalek Hover Craft... )
BRO! Is that Transformers DS music!?!?
If the crucible daleks had shields they would be even more unstoppable
Is that music from transformers ds? Sweeeeet
I would prefer the shield to have the ability to deflect bullets and stuff back where they were fired, like a lightsaber.
Use it again!
I prefer daleks that dont use sheilds, it makes them look stronger and more fearless to their enemies
And watching hundreds of bullets bouncing off the casing is just satisfying, watch the dr who anime to see what i mean
What is the reason the Daleks become terrible shots in the Moffat era? The Asylum Daleks has only just woken up, but the rest should never miss.
Much prefer the forcefield from Series 1 to seeing bullets hit the casing as in Series 4. The Daleks in Series 4 are meant to be more powerful.
Probably less reluctant to use them in their overwhelming numbers in front of lesser life forms

I perfer them without shields
I've got a better chance of survival that way
