Hi Laura, really helpful video firstly so thank you! I wondered if you’ve had any experience with wrapping like this where the cupboard grooves are curved at all? My Mum is looking to do hers but the groove pattern on the door is arched at the top. Would love to know your thoughts? Thanks 😊
NJS I haven’t done a curved groove before myself but this would definitely require a heat gun/hairdryer if it’s the type of door that I am thinking about. I would say basically any surface that isn’t flat, place the wrap in position on the flattest part of the surface and then use heat to mould around any curves using a squeegee or small tool to push into place. I hope that helps 😊
Oh my gosh!! I am SO HAPPY and reassured in knowing there is someone else in the world like me! I have used contact paper/peel and stick paper to do everything from room borders, cabinet refinishing, cabinet repurposing, or for a general change. Attention-to-detail is SO WORTH IT!! ❤
When my daughter told me she was having her counters and cabinets wrapped, I pictured saran wrap lol, I didn't understand. But my son in laws niece did it for them, and they turned out gorgeous! They look like new cabinets and countertops.
This is a fantastic idea. You did a great job. For those naysayers who'd rather paint I say go with this instead. I've painted and it's a pain and it's messy. Nice thing about this is that if the vinyl peels away, it can easily be fixed.
Thank you Suzanne ☺️ exactly! I’d have been constantly touching up if it were paint. Although I’ve probably done this the long winded way, by doing it in strips if there is any damage caused I can can just peel and replace that particular section
Thank God I have found your video and it is so much helpful I have been thinking to do this for so long but wasn’t too sure if it’s gonna work or not but I am glad it is actually a good idea.
Thank you so so much! I have exactly the same cabinet does as you and i couldn't work out how to get the vinyl wrap on the middle bit. Got totally frustrated. Its so obvious after watching this!
My extended family pained theur cabinets and a top coat of poly and let me tell you~ It not only LOOKS AMAZING. But it actually looks like BRAND NEW cabinets! WORTH all the time and they did change out the handles for a new updated look. Which added to the project looking BRAND NEW!💖💚💖💚💖💚💖💚💖💚💖💚
It’s funny, I just bought some glossy white vinyl to do my cupboards (haven’t even received them yet) and I stumbled across this video. What great timing. I am almost finished with my kitchen countertop, which I covered in a glossy, glittery black. Fortunately, my cupboards are straight with no insets or even hardware so it should be fairly easy. I bought black handles for the cupboards and drawers. My cupboards won’t be as difficult as yours but this video is so helpful - thank you!
Ive seen this done before but they cover the whole front with wrap and use a heat gun to push into the edges and sides..much easier than cutting strips
£5! That’s incredible. Especially since companies that do revamps with new doors will charge 100 times that. I still don’t know why kitchens are so costly since they’re just chipboard boxes. Thanks for the video
When I was trained by DC Fix you were supposed to use aspray of water on the surface first, then lay on the vinyl and squeegee out the bubblesand water. The water lets you move or remove the vinyl before final flatten.
I helped my son do this to his kitchen but we put 1large piece tightly over the doors and then used the hairdryer to heat it and pushed the vinyl into the groves which is so much easier and actually is on the instructions it can be heated
Hi Amanda, one piece only works with certain types of doors - these type needs the strips because it doesn’t stretch out far enough to cover when heated
Looks really good. Had no idea this was an option. I doubt I could make it look that nice. I have a hard enough time using contact paper on shelves! LOL!
These look amazing, if I did this to a cabinet that had been painted with a roller , will I see the texture through the vinyl ? Also how well does this vinyl clean with everyday messes ?
It cleans really well. It’s a decent thickness, I would think it would cover although you’d probably be more likely to get air bubbles if not completely smooth surface
Thanks for the video Lauren, really well done. I have not used this product but I have plenty of similar experience. I would think that the paint or any other embellishment would show through, the product is very thin. You would need to sand down first to get a perfectly smooth surface first.
We have the exact same cupboards . Just thinking would it not be easier to use one single sheet to cover each door rather then using three separate sheets ?
Hi Abbas, you’d think so! This product doesn’t stretch far enough when heated for these doors to do that, it only really works with one sheet of there is a raised section in the middle ☺️
I have never heard of wrapping a cabinet door! Too much trouble for me, would rather paint it. You must be a "detail" person and I admire that. I am a "big picture, design it" person; let someone else execute it! My hubby is a fine artist, sign letterer/free hand and can do anything skilled with his hands...he once watched me wrap a gift and said, "you wrap that like a drunken sailor", LOL!
Lol, it does take patience, I’m currently wrapping another set of doors and certainly don’t seem to have the same amount of patience this time around! Thanks for watching ☺️
@@LauraDoesLife Good luck, you do a beautiful job with detail work. Sometimes I have to take a break and plow back in later when I have more focus and energy on demanding projects.
If you very so slightly plane the underneath of the door first this will stop the vinyl from rubbing against each other and coming away a few months down the line, keeping it looking like new
You’d think so at first look but you actually waste more of it like that - because the middle is set lower there wouldn’t be any coverage on the inside edge if you get what I mean? You’d then end up having to cut a larger middle piece for the edge to be covered and waste the smaller middle section.
Hi Anne Marie - bubbles are easy to sort, just get a small pin or needle and prick into the top of the bubble then go over with the squeege and they should come straight out! If you’re getting a lot you maybe be working it too fast, try holding the wrap up off the surface and only let it touch the surface when you are ready to smooth over with the squeegee. Hope that helps! 😊
It was really easy. I was adding in a few extra cabinets so I bought a new piece of cornice and wrapped it before I fitted it on to the cupboards. I wouldn’t recommend doing them whilst they are still in place as would probably be quite tricky, much easier if you take them off - they are usually just screwed in to the cabinet 🙂
Hi Jessica, I’ve got all new worktops so nothing else for wrapping at the moment. I did a video using this on some Ikea drawers so the top of those would be very similar to doing a worktop if you’d like to check that out 😊 th-cam.com/video/aIp6BV3sRVU/w-d-xo.html
Can I ask what kind of glue you used for the bits that start to peel up? I've done it on the same doors and a few bits keep popping up a few months later.
Question for you since this looks like such a good idea. I am very patient and like detailed work....but....I have intricate crown mold at the top of my kitchen cabinets that have a fancy rope/braid pattern on it. Would this vinyle take on that shape? My concern is if I can do all of the cabinet and doors with the available white of this material, but have to paint the crown mold on the cabinets, it might look odd (painted surface and color difference side by side with the wrapped doors). I would have to be able to wrap the crown mold in order to match the color and finish. Love to hear back from you on this!
Hi Donna, if you have the patience it should work but l would definitely recommend using heat on it with a hairdryer and probably use something like a cotton earbud or orange stick to push the vinyl into place into the crevices on the moulding. Lay the vinyl over the top, turn on the heat and push into place. Would also only recommend using the Matt finish not the gloss. The gloss is much thicker and harder to work with but the Matt should go on fine, it will probably just take a little bit of practice. I’d remove it from your units too if possible so that you can sit at a table whilst doing it ☺️
I like the little red Honda brand ruler. Where did you find that? I’m in the US, I did a Google search, and it doesn’t appear anywhere at all. Cool piece. Lovely work by the way.
I’m a big fan of Honda Formula One Racing, that’s why noticed it. I would clean the plaster, or paint that’s on the edge, it seems like it’s a rare little item. Love you’re videos. Take care.😊✌🏻
Hi Kirsty, there’s no need to prime before using this product. Unless you have a really poor surface, then I’d just use a standard paint undercoat perhaps and give it a sand and wipe over before applying.
If you want a good primer then it's got to be 3M tape primer 94, it is expensive though, £29 for a 250ml tin, wipe the primer into the grooves with a lint free cloth and it double the adhesive qualities of the contact paper, I use this all the time at work and wrap kitchens etc on a daily basis.
DЯAiИ G4ИG H€ЯФ I’d tried this and was really tricky as the center part of the doors was lower so it was constantly ripping and creasing up. If the middle had been raised it certainly would have been better to do it that way. This particular style of door was just a bit of a nightmare with only 2 hands!
Roo Blue yes I did, I was trying it on a larger door and the middle is quite deep. Probably with another pair of hands to hold the door or the hairdryer I might have been able to manage it but by that point I had wasted quite a lot of the wrap so looked at this way as an alternative ☺️ definitely better to do it in one section if you can manage it although I’m glad I’ve done it like this as My dishwasher door has a scrape on it so will be easy to repair one section rather than re-wrapping the whole door!
@@LauraDoesLife ah I was hoping you would say no lol dc fix have a video on here making it look simple 😂that's a hood point about only having to redo 1 section though!
Kelly Morgan so far it’s holding up well but it’s only been on a month or so. I would say if you are going to paint then make sure you put a varnish over the top so that is more durable when wiped down. The wrap is easy to clean but I would say keep some spare in case you need to make any repairs further down the line. I scratched some of the cupboards when I was fitting new worktops but was easy to fix with a new piece of wrap. Have you seen the full completed kitchen with new worktops? Budget Kitchen Renovation | Kitchen Makeover | Part Two th-cam.com/video/XomXRmf4QYU/w-d-xo.html
It was already peeling on most of the doors so easily pulled off. There were a couple that were still intact, I just sliced the corner and slid a knife underneath to loosen then pulled off. Hope that helps
Yes it does. I had to get some extra doors made as I was extending the kitchen slightly with extra cupboards, these were plain mdf and covered fine. Tip with it is though not to pull back the vinyl too much once it’s stuck on otherwise it gets residue from the mdf stuck onto it which can cause a lump. Just peel back small amounts as you are apply and this shouldn’t happen. Also a tip from another viewer was to spray with water first before applying. Hope this helps!
I pulled off the existing wrap on quite a few of them because it was coming off so most were plain mdf now I come to think of it. Just give them a wipe and make sure there’s no dust and you should be fine 😊
I did it a bit at a time, so I’d say you could do a whole kitchen in a day easily. I took my time for this video purely for demonstration purposes. Once you’ve got the hang of it it’s less than 10 minutes per door. Flat doors are obviously a lot quicker and easier to do too 😊
Is there not a spray-on version available? Seems to me that this “sticky paper” version is near impossible to do perfectly. Also, corners and areas where strips meet, sooner or later become an eyesore, at least for my eyes.. ;-)
Hi, I used the deign folie self adhesive film in light grey (seidenmatt hellgrau). www.diy.com/departments/d-c-fix-plain-matt-grey-self-adhesive-film-l-2m-w-675mm/4007386341068_BQ.prd?rrec=true
I've got a question.. so the wrap on my kitchen cabinets at the house we just moved into started bubbling on the bottom of the cabinet door. How do I fix that? Any tips would help!
Hi Catherine, perhaps try heating with a hairdryer and smooth it down. If it’s the original factory wrap this may not work but worth giving it a try! 😊
I have bar high table and a 6 cub storage unit (Target) in the corner of my living room. I would like to make them the same color in a wood finish. Problem: table has beveled edge and a circular edge in front!!! Any ideas.???
Bevelled edges are slightly more difficult, definitely use a heat gun or hairdryer and cut the edges so they bling at the fold. Maybe also cut separate pieces and try to join them?
I don’t understand why people watch this video if they think painting would be easier. It’s a completely different concept and finished product. I regularly paint furniture and it’s so hard to maintain. Kitchens get a lot of wear, paint requires so much maintenance. As mentioned for other comments, this is purely for demonstration purposes, when you are doing your own kitchen it really doesn’t take that long.
Lol. When U said air bubbles at first I thought u said herbivores. Obviously my accent is different then yours. By the way, your cabinets are beautiful. You’ve got great attention to detail
Definitely easier! Painting would have taken priming, 2-3 coats and a few coats of varnish. I like the finish with this too! Visible brush stroke would have driven me crazy!
That looks great! Can you wrap existing factory wrapped doors or do you need to rough it up with sandpaper? Also, how is it beside heat, i.e., the oven?
You can cover over existing wrap, there is no need to sand down. Just make sure the surface is clean. An existing grain shouldn’t show through as dc fix is quite a good thickness. It’s holding up really well around my oven so the heat isn’t causing any damage, I think it is heat resistant up to a certain temperature. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching 😊

Spraying water on bare mdf is not advisable as it soaks it in then swells.
Never spray water on bare MDF and to stop those lifting bits/bubbles on corners use some 3M primer 94…

Laura did you prick holes along the grooves when you tried the heat hun?
How long does the wrap last, is it quite secure? Trying to figure out if I should do something like this or paint!😊
Vinyl will last 10 plus years if looked after
hi how did you get the old wrap off
It was already peeling on most of the doors so easily pulled off. There were a couple that were still intact, I just sliced the corner and slid a knife underneath to loosen then pulled off. Hope that helps
Do you think this product would cover bare MDF any tips appreciated .very good video
@@LauraDoesLife when I watched your video I thought the cupboard door looked like new MDF thank you for reply will be trying over weekend
I pulled off the existing wrap on quite a few of them because it was coming off so most were plain mdf now I come to think of it. Just give them a wipe and make sure there’s no dust and you should be fine 😊
100% this stuff works on mdf
Looks amazing, how long did it take you to wrap the whole kitchen? Thanks
Also, corners and areas where strips meet, sooner or later become an eyesore, at least for my eyes.. ;-)
Hi. Nice vid. But please can you tell us what the EXACT DC Fix product is, that you used. They're different types. How about a link to the product?
@@LauraDoesLife Awesome, thank you! ❤️
@@LauraDoesLife do you have any videos on that procedure. Can I use a hair dryer?
You are brilliant atdiy from Julie
Painting would be much easier! In the time you spent on the first strip I would have had the first coat painted on both sides
Impressive thanks
Hey, my mum asked if you could remcommed someone to do our kitchen
Lol. When U said air bubbles at first I thought u said herbivores. Obviously my accent is different then yours. By the way, your cabinets are beautiful. You’ve got great attention to detail
Lol thank you CheeChee! TH-cam’s subtitles struggle with some things I say too! Where are you from?
I’ve painted cabinets and this looks less tedious actually definitely less messy and less steps
Btw, the doors have a slightly contoured grain pattern.
I rent as well and wondered how easy it is to get this off of the cabinets?? Does it damage them?
Not at all it just pulls right off. It doesn’t even leave a sticky residue 😊
@@LauraDoesLife thanks so much!
